  • Your videos are great. Each one is well thought out and prepared without being stiff. You use the camera angles very well to get the point you want across. The sound and video quality are good and well edited. And, most importantly, the info you present I have found very, very useful. Thanks so much for posting these.

  • You're awesome, I immidiately got it after watching this vid!

Even tho I sat on a bike with real gearbox for the first time. ^^

    Thank you!

  • you are a cop brooo... u look like(police)

  • Shifting up can also be done without clutch, just aplly preasure to gearlever, roll of the gas, and when u reach the point just before u start to enginebreak, the it will go up to next gear and u go back on the gas again. Doing it like that is faster and safer if u really push it it.

    But great vid :D

  • nicely presented. A+

  • OMG. I love you.

  • Great vid. Does remind me of the coolest stunt I've ever seen though. It was done by a chap riding an old (not so old then) GPz900 at one of these show off in a car park type events. He starts riding the bike in a circle and gradually gets slower and turning tighter. His left elbow is on the tank and his chin is on his hand. Next the left foot moves to the pillion peg and the rider peg decks. It stays rattling off the floor as he keeps riding round in tiny circles. Never touches the clutch.

  • Your videos are helpful, just started riding again after 10 years. Bought a 96 Magna with 8k. I love the bike, great power and handling. Can you do another video on rain riding? When you lean in a turn on wet corners(90 degrees), what is the best way to keep the rear tire from sliding out? Thanks, great job on the videos, helps a lot of riders, including me.

  • Awesome vids, Cap'n!

  • hahahahahahaha Dude you make the best vids I swear!

  • great video. probably the best i've seen.

  • Great teacher

  • It reminds me of a Bill Nye the Science Guy on Bikes

  • One the best illustration video I seen in a long time great job Capt!

  • Awsome video, and awsome camera setups!

  • Good vid Capt.

This one's just for the newbies: using the friction zone (or slipping the clutch as it's also know) should only be performed at low speeds in 1st and 2nd gear. Above 15mph, you should always corner with the bike fully engaged in gear. This will reduce the risk of the rear wheel sliding or locking.

  • Cant believe i actually said "clutch is ya buddy"...lol

  • if I am in 2nd gear, and I shift to 3rd gear, do i have to ease the clutch out or can i drop it? Can you stall at high speed?

  • Upshifting through the gears is fundamentally all the same, you should match your RPMs to your speed--if you're having to eeeeeeeeeeeeease the clutch out shifting to third then you may be shifting too soon. An upshift should be quick and clean. Make sense?

  • except in first gear correct?

  • Same in first gear going up to second, any gear shift up should be neat and tidy and quick.......... I think shifting down you have to slowly let the clutch back on. ;-)

  • @qtrinh same question... his answer didnt really answer it for me, have you figured it out?

  • Really great video. Creative idea with the rod attached to the clutch, really made it a lot easier to understand especially with the on-screen graphics. Keep up the good work!

  • A great video!

When I was learning to ride, my instructor told us to imagine wringing out a wet towel when shifting. Right hand goes away from you, left hand squeezes - it doesn't have to be a quick action (though it will get quicker with practice).

  • nice vid as always! Get on with uploading a new video, it's still too cold to ride in Sweden =(

Can't wait getting on my ktm 625!

  • Great video. Way to go Crash, five stars.

  • Cool Vid. Im 15 1/2 and just got a new motorcycle and am just learning how to shift. By the way is that a Yamaha XT?

  • Suzuki DRZ400SM. XT's are good bikes too though!

  • Oh wow you're an awesome teacher!! It pretty much showed me that it's kind of like a Manual Transmission car! I watched other tutorials and they made it so complicated with so much talkin, BUT! I have one question...

For a normal ride in a car you usually shift between 2-3 RPM

What about or bikes? what RPM do you shift? And if to go fast then which RPM at that?

    Thanks CAP'N!

  • It's pretty much up to you! You don't want to shift too early and lug the engine. Find your own sweet spot where things happen comfortably. Check your owner's manual and they'll have some suggestions.

  • Ooo so it's not like my car after all since most cars shift between 2-3 RPM when just gettin from point A to point B, Thanks alot Capt!

  • You'll probably find it is like your car in the sense that there will be a 'sweet spot' for daily riding. Many bikes rev upto 13-14,000 rpm so the spot will be higher on the bike than in a car Crash is just saying you'll have to find it yourself as every bike/car is different! With my bike I change around 7,500-9000rpm when im riding casually.

  • keep up the good work great videos.

  • WATCH THE HQ VERSION! CLICK ON THE HQ BUTTON AND IT'S STILL THERE! Don't know why the LQ version is missing....

  • Another great video, Crash.

You're like the Bill Nye of motorcycles.

Also, me and my clutch are best pals.

  • Thanks Crash, great video! I def need to work on my low speed clutch work.

  • Brilliant video!

  • My Joe Rocket jacket is just like his. I love it, but what's more I have to laugh at people that buy that sh!t and thinks it's the end all be all.

    It's made in Pakistan...

Bought mine off CL for...$20 bucks. And I'll be damned if I'll ever buy a new jacket. Dealers prolly pay $20 bucks for it, and sell it to brand snobs for a 300% mark-up.

In the immortal words of Nelson Muntz...HA HA!!

Have fun and be safe, but most of all keep the rubber side down, Brand Whores!

  • way to go crash

  • Awesome idea you had with the little rod thinghy, gives a great visual help. Good job!

  • clutch is my best friend lol great vid as always

when i first got started riding i always thought shifting was so complicated but like a week later its the easiest thing i ever done

  • 5 stars good job

  • thought this was going to be a clutch up vid.

  • lol another great vid :)

  • nice job with the indicator and the graphics. love the vid !

  • Great as always
