I have a Percheron mare and I just bought a Mustang gelding. The gelding does dressage. He floats across the ground. The mare is my friend. when I was 15 I wanted to be a jockey..they didn't have female jockeys in those days. When I found out what the horse racing world was like, I am glad I never became a jockey.....this song is special for all horses....but more so for those who race...as if they had a choice.
Great song. Doubt Fogelberg was thinking about Secretariat since Secretariat was foaled in Caroline County, Virginia, not western Kentucky. Fogelberg should have written "Central Kentucky" instead of "Western Kentucky." I guess "Western" sounded better?
@mdhokie2007 I agree. And "Run For the Rose" always refers to "The Kentucky Derby," which is for 3 year old Thoroughbreds, NOT Arabians, Warmbloods, Mustangs and Haflingers!
Most often it's the bloodlines, that determine the champions.Occassionly you get a maverick like "John Henry" who at one time was claimed in a $2500 claiming race. I believe he was also gelded.Which means he couldn't pass on his bloodline.
For those who wish to know the behind the scenes story of Secretariat, the biography by Lawrence Scanlan, "The Horse God Built," St Martin's Press (2006) is wonderful. It is a tear jerker though, so be prepared to cry all the way through it.

I live in Louisville, KY right next to Churchill Downs. My great-uncle Roscoe Goose was in the first class of Horsceracing Hall of Fame inductees. He invented the jockey helmet, and won the 1913 Kentucky Derby riding on Doneral @ 90:1 odds (the record). My other great-uncle Carl Goose won the 1913 Kentucky Oaks but died at 22 in a freak accident. Their brother, great-grandfather Luther became enormously wealthy in the horse industry, even owning part of downtown Louisville.
Beautiful song, beautifully performed. This man was blessed by the musical gods. His music always evokes such emotion which is something only the truly talented can do.
An exquisite song. The song is truly about horses; however, an added beauty to this song is that these words can representatively apply to humankind as well. Many truths within this song. Thank you for this post.
The line that gets me in this song is "it's the chance of a lifetime in a lifetime of chance." Horses are so strong and powerful, yet so vulnerable and easily injured. For any horse to make it to a normal life span is as much up to chance as anything else. In memory of my beloved Thoroughbred broodmare, Savannah (Jeannie's Dreamer JC) who we helped to the Rainbow Bridge in Sept. 2010 due to severe laminitis.
@WolfCreekHorses so very sorry for your loss..we helped our lad "Shadow" (Doing Time 1979 APHC) in Oct.2007.He was probably the BEST horse I've ever been blessed to have in my life. He helped raise our 2 geldings that we have now-the perfect "Uncle" horse for them to learn from <3

In my 55+ years of life I have listened to many artists, some great, some not so great. Dan Fogelberg is by far the most talented artist I ever had the honor to listen to. Also, I was honored by seeing him live in concert four times. Four times that will be with me for ever. I know Dan is in a better place now, but selfishly I wish he was here still among us entertaining us with all his great songs. Perhaps, he is among us as an angel and it would be so fitting. Horses are the most beautiful creatures and they are so free spirited. My Uncle and my Cousin are both ex-jockeys. My cousin still works at the race track in Santa Anita, CA as an excercise boy. He excercises the horses for the races and he also trains them. I went to Santa Anita on opening day and alot of horses are bred in Calmulet, I live in Louisville, KY and I am so proud of this song and what it represents. RIP Dan.
This was a loss of the greatest degree when we lost Dan. I remember a concert he played at the Summit in Houston. He was alone on the stage with just his guitar playing to a capacity crowd. It was a pretty good night. To all the men out there take your PSA test annualy. I wish Dan had. I have and they caught it. I am now cancer free.
There is too much beauty in music, too much beauty in the world sometimes, and I fail to see or recall it on a daily basis....and then when I finally do, it is all just too much.
"Cruel Sport"??? Marathon runners, who run just for sport, put themselves through incredible stress and pain. Horses like to run. They certainly do appear to be raring to go when that gate opens. I am not referring to things like doping which do go on. It is heartbreaking when there is an incident and the horse has to be put down.
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
I fell in love with horses. They have such a free spirit and run with such freedom. I want a black stallion so bad. They are so beautiful. I want to run free like they do.
Great song DAN....Everybody has a soft side or easy listening side to them...lol.."Lonely in Love"or "Make love Stay"are my FAVs...HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY...PEACE ON EARTH
i saw him in concert in baton rouge. it was awesome, but for some reason, he refused to sing this song. i think the audience pissed him because they kept yelling for him to play it when he was performing, lol. but, i will never forget that night and i have been to a lot of concerts (although, mostly rock or metal)

@valeriemci1 , I agree with you. Such beautiful animals. It hurts my heart when they have to put one with a broken leg, or some just die from the stress. I do love this song and Dan, though. So sad.
@valeriemci1 The vast majority of horse owners and people directly involved with these horses love these animals. It's a beautiful sport that is sometimes handed tragedy just like everything else in life. This is not dog racing or dog fighting.
@valeriemci1 I agree. Horses are majestic creatures, but will do what they are told to do.. and often suffer for it. There is a site that lists some victims at: horsedeathwatchDOTcom. That said, I've always enjoyed Dan's music.
Thank you Dan Fogelberg for being a part of the music that makes up the sound track to my life. I am so sad that you are no longer here but your music will be a part of me until my last breath. Rest in peace
@nancyalis just read your post. I was there, too, and I was also heartbroken. Just the same, she DID prove herself in the only race she lost. She WAS better than any of those horses that day. Mike Smith lost that race, not Zenyatta. I am so glad she retired healthy- I was also at Churchill when Eight Belles ran and didn't get to go back to that stall... peace be with you this holiday season.
@wildkatlive Mike Smith was devastated by that loss. He broke down at his press conference, which he handled with grace & professionalism. There is going to be a final Zenatta parade on Sat, if you racing TV (which I can't even PAY for here). I couldn't believe how fast she came from behind. She could have won. I saw the race when Eight Belles ran, although I wasn't there. I went to the Kentucky Derby Museum at CD & saw the beautiful statue that was made in her honor. Have a wonderful holiday
I AM THE WHITE HORSE OF REVELATION 6:1-2 WHO MEETS THE OTHER WHITE HORSE IN REVELATION 19- JESUS- WE ARE THE TWO WITNESSES OF REVELATION 11- WE WON ALREADY BUT IT WILL TAKE SOME TIME FOR THE FALSE PROPHET MOHAMED TO REALIZE THAT HE HAS LOST THE END TIME GAME.
SUCH A PRETTY SONG! AS I MADE MY LIVING WORKING WITH THESE MAGNIFICENT ANIMALS, IT TRULY MAKES ME LOOK BACK AND REMEMBER ALL OF THE CHAMPIONS I HAD THE GOOD FORTUNE TO WORK WITH !! THANKS TO DAN FOR HIS WISDOM AND HEART !
I've loved listening to Dan since hist first lp (and I still have it) and still listen to him often. It just doesn't get old (with some time in between). Netherlands is another very good album I recommend to those who don't know about it.
i live in louisville ky.. been to derby once about 12 years ago... but this song... makes my heart proud.. makes me think... maybe.. maybe the horse wants it too...
the beginning really got me. it was a quiet moment and then that beautiful music starts playin and autimatcally i cried. such a great song and we will miss u Dan!
I was not aware that he passed away.. the great ones die wayyy too soon.. He was a remarkable musician, great poet... He will be missed.. I'm sorry I didn't know he was gone... I've always loved this song.. after watching the Derby today, I looked it up on YouTube.. Rest in Peace
I heard this song in high school and fell in love, not knowing who the artist was. A week later, I had everything that Dan had recorded to date, and my family was as sick of hearing them as they were my John Denver albums. I still have all the vinyl. I was blessed to see him over a dozen times, solo, with guitar and piano, with a full orchestra, and with Tim Weisberg. A beautiful man and a gift to us all. I have tears streaming as I listen. Thank you for posting this!
This still makes me cry, and it inspires me as well. Thanks, Dan!

I fell in love with horses. They have such a free spirit and run with such freedom. I want a black stallion so bad. They are so beautiful. I want to run free like they do.

Dan was just an amazing talent. He died too young, for sure. Nice video, complements the song. Thanks for posting.

i saw him in concert in baton rouge. it was awesome, but for some reason, he refused to sing this song. i think the audience pissed him because they kept yelling for him to play it when he was performing, lol. but, i will never forget that night and i have been to a lot of concerts (although, mostly rock or metal)

The state of Kentucky once used this song with videos of the race horses. I have looked all over for it but can't find it anywhere.

Beautiful song for such a cruel and heartless sport...horse racing.
valeriemci1 1 year ago 3
@valeriemci1 , I agree with you. Such beautiful animals. It hurts my heart when they have to put one with a broken leg, or some just die from the stress. I do love this song and Dan, though. So sad.
simplysingin 1 year ago
@valeriemci1 The vast majority of horse owners and people directly involved with these horses love these animals. It's a beautiful sport that is sometimes handed tragedy just like everything else in life. This is not dog racing or dog fighting.

@valeriemci1 Cruel and heartless? lol, what are ya some kinda hippie? j/k ;)

Just came home from the Breeder's Cup 2010 in Churchill Downs. The one & only time I got to watch Zenyatta run, and then lost. It broke my heart.
nancyalis 1 year ago 2
@nancyalis just read your post. I was there, too, and I was also heartbroken. Just the same, she DID prove herself in the only race she lost. She WAS better than any of those horses that day. Mike Smith lost that race, not Zenyatta. I am so glad she retired healthy- I was also at Churchill when Eight Belles ran and didn't get to go back to that stall... peace be with you this holiday season.
wildkatlive 1 year ago
@wildkatlive Mike Smith was devastated by that loss. He broke down at his press conference, which he handled with grace & professionalism. There is going to be a final Zenatta parade on Sat, if you racing TV (which I can't even PAY for here). I couldn't believe how fast she came from behind. She could have won. I saw the race when Eight Belles ran, although I wasn't there. I went to the Kentucky Derby Museum at CD & saw the beautiful statue that was made in her honor. Have a wonderful holiday

I've loved listening to Dan since hist first lp (and I still have it) and still listen to him often. It just doesn't get old (with some time in between). Netherlands is another very good album I recommend to those who don't know about it.
