i believe this guy is Xiong Guobao, the 3rd singles player in the era of Yang Yang and Zhao Jianhua. He uses his backhand like his forehand or perhaps better :)

i don't think it's wrong. back then, the play was much much slower, and more technical, which is why they use the chasse step. now, you want faster movement, so you cross your legs, or on the back hand corner, twist and leaps.
