  • You picked your feet in Poughkeepsie?? Huh?? I wanna hear it!! GH epicness!

  • the 70s will undeniably always be known for being the best decade in film. so many classics came out of the 70s

  • Greatest non sequitur of all time.

  • GENE HACKMAN FOR LIFE

  • Ah haha this movie is fantastic, Hackman and Scheider are nails together. And Roy does look like he's trying not to laugh here in a couple of parts! It fits with the scene, but it's also pretty funny in real life.

  • 0:31 to 0:48 Roy seems to be off his mark, blocking Alan's face while he's delivering his lines. Otherwise, that must have been the best take.

  • "Now I'm gonna bust your ass for those three bags and I'm gonna NAIL you for pickin' your feet in Poughkeepsie." -- ROFL!!

  • Pick your feet in poughkeepsie was used by the real Popeye Doyle, Eddie Egan. It referred to a rape case from way back when the perp sat on the end of the bed and picked his toenails after raping a girl in her own house. True story, see The Poughkeepsie Shuffle documentary on the dvd.

  • @danstrummer Egan was always upset because the technique isn't done right in the movie. What Egan did was the old "fluster the perp into confessing" interrogation technique; here the technique is just a means to abuse the suspect.

  • lolwut71 has it right. It was just to freak the perp out ala good cop/bad cop.....

  • 4 people picked their feet

  • What it means: picking your feet?

  • @jw200 It means: Injecting drug into feet.

  • my advice..if you have the DVD of this..turn on the Director commentary with Wiliam Friedkin. and he explains the whole reasoning behind it. The two real life detectives were playing good cop bad cop..one would ask nonsensical questions and the other straightforward ones.. it was a way to breakdown the suspect mentally and make them give up information.

  • "I've got this man in Duluth,Minnesota that wants to talk with you".

  • It is truly disturbing, but the actors today cannot achieve this:

-Cold Winter, New York City, visceral confrontation...

-With Hackmann & co. It was De Facto. -It was 'real'.

But today, we really have to struggle to view the embarrassing, gormless shit that American Cinema coughs out.

  • @guthywoodry You are so right.American Cinema today is the lowest form of dogshit out there. What's even more sickening is the girly dorks and their stupid hairdos that actually enjoy today's boring, mindless motion pictures. And the same goes for today's "music".

  • 0:43 and 1:08 check out Roy Scheider's reaction (cracking up and walking away). Gene Hackman must have improvised the "picking your feet" and "bowling scores" lines so Roy Scheider had to walk away or blow the whole scene. FANTASTIC!

  • @BeeCeeEff I'm pretty sure that the "picking feet" line was not improvised.

  • @BeeCeeEff Wow, I didn't notice that before! thanks :D

  • @BeeCeeEff The amazing thing is this was supposed to be the first scene shot (in December 1970) but it never went right and they shot the rest of the film first before redoing this scene.

  • Off duty, Popeye Doyle / Gene Hackman returned to his occasional hobby as God.

Doom Siren, pay heed to chadley6916,

-Verily, For He may be a long lost relative, & is indeed versed & learn'ed in the ways of Poughkeepsie Feet pickers.

Now, Pour Me Another Whisky afore I die !

  • Now this is how the American Gene Hunt, from Life on Mars, should come across. Its a shame Hackmans too old for that role,as he's very good at playing violent&dry-humored characters.Make Popeye Doyle,a bit more humorous&you get the American Gene Hunt. One of Hollywoods greatest legends.

  • that was meant as an answer for

    guillermodelarosa, of course.

  • LOL! One of the best scenes in the movie. Popeye: "I'm gonna bust your ass for those three bags, and I'm gonna nail you for pickin your feet in Poughkeepsie!" Hilarious!

  • DoomSiren,.....

-Just What Planet Are You From ?

  • What movie is this from?

  • @DoomSiren

French Connection. Nevermind guthywoodry...I guess he thinks everyone should know this or they are stupid?! He is just trying to showboat a little...I guess he doesn't realize he comes off like the dick...

  • They need to be Ripped Asunder;

-Those Who Pick Their Feet in Poughkeepsie.

  • You put a steel in my partner, KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS?? HUH??? All winter long I gotta listen to him complain about his bowlin' scores!!

    Great dialog!!

  • I wanna see doyle do this to obama ,lol

  • I wish you'd give obama a bj

  • He would probably like it since hes a muslim, probably a good job for you and the hagies !

  • He's not a muslim. but you do have an extra chromosome

  • Wake up Obama's a meat-puppet...

  • you lost your dad

  • lol Blow it out of your highly conventional ass, he's a meat-puppet. Don't be so spiteful it's bad for your health.

  • I dont get the joke of this scene... would someone explain it to me??

PS: Loved this movie, by the way

  • Heroin addicts will often inject themselves in their feet so their track marks don't show.

I live in Pough to... never met Popeye Doyle tho...

  • By the looks of his smirking partner, anyway, apparently this is a routine he goes through w/ suspects for fun, to blow off steam.

"Interrogating" them about some random meaningless thing, completely confusing them and throwing them off guard. LOL

  • Fantastic Roy Scheider keeps walking away dying to laugh hahaha

  • I'd like to see Gene Hackman do this to Bill Gates.

  • I live 20 min away from poughkeepsie

  • Do you pick your feet, Cause you'll get nailed..He He

  • I live in poughkeepsie lol.

  • I wish i lived in poughkeepsie

  • n0 you do not. TRUST ME. ITS A FUCKING MESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.

  • gene hackman would have made a good rocky marciano if they ever had made a movie back then

  • @innit27 - Actually it was Tony LoBianco (who played Sal Boca in TFC) who played Rocky Marciano in the 1979 biopic.

  • popeye doyle

  • even though this was the first scene in the movie,it was the last one filmed.after a preview,Gene Hackman wasn't pleased with it and asked to film it again.

  • @tomloft2000 It's true, Gene was having trouble getting into the role of the racist, abusive cop when this scene was first shot early on in the production; the footage was not used. Near the end of filming the scene was reshot as seen here, much better.

  • best non sequitur ever

  • haha, thanks for putting this up

  • what is this clip from?

  • its from the french connection

  • duh...

    Just Kidding.

  • the best,

  • Cheers for posting this....Scheider trying not to laugh is great, just the sort of thing I'll miss. R.I.P.

  • RIP (Cloudy) We'll miss you-

  • He uses it as a BS charge to book a dirtbag on. Kinda like spitting on the sidewalk.

  • go Bill

  • I don't get it....?

  • No-one really gets it, it's just supposed to be his way of intimidating suspects as far as I can gather

  • That's Bill O'reilly! Wow, he hasn't changed a bit.

  • or Gene Hackman..

  • AHAHA PICKED YOUR FEET IN POUGHKEEPSIE I do it almost every two weeks in my room on College ave. LMAO
