He was great, but nowhere near that calibur! You forget Man O'War,Secretariat,Citation,Kelso,Seattle Slew,Devil's Bag,Spectacular Bid,Busher,Ruffian, etc. 5ht or 10th, hes not even in the rankings.
To me, the most disappointing part of the Big Brown story isn't the failure to win the triple crown. Kent Desormeaux said in several interviews that he never pushed Big Brown to full throttle. It's a shame that we'll never know what kind of speed this amazing horse really had. He had the potential to be as legendary as Secretariat.

Dont blame smarty for being retired because his owner's have no backbone, because he would have won the haskell and whatever other grade 1 brown won. 2004 was a better class of 3 year olds as well, He ran good in the derby slop, he had just a good preakness as brown and plus his belmont shows that smarty was better
yes the Belmont proved nothing; how can you prove he was better when he came in last, regardless of quarter cracks? And don't begin with the naturally talented card, Smarty was undefeated in 6 straight leading up to the Derby and was the 17 post on a bad track at Churchill. He did just as good as Brown in the first two triple crown races so there can be no argument there.
And his other two grade one wins that you always bring up were unimpressive at best, He had to hold off a 20-1 in Coal Play at the Haskell and Proudinsky in the Monmouth Stakes, races that he should have won handily. And Brown was retired for an injury as well, so he is just as injury prone as Smarty, he only ran in 8 races, in fact one less than Smarty. Maybe you should read up on your Big Brown stats.
Records don't matter when they enter the starting gate. Smarty didn't run on steroids! Take Big Brown off steroids he gets his butt kicked. I always thought he was overrated. After the preakness I was convinced Big Brown was for real. Then the info. surfaced about his steroid injections & I lost all respect for him. Run Pleasant Colony over as a 2yo. Say what you want but PleasantC. fractions in the Belmont were faster than the previous one. What was Big Browns? Did he even cross the finish line?Pleasant C. was also a top sire for years after his race career.Time will tell what Big Brown will produce. I hope he is a good sire because those foot problems really hampered him. I really thought he would be a triple Crown winner after those 2 dominating performances.

At least Curlin showed up for his races. Travelled across the globe & brought the Dubai trophy back to the states. Demonstrating his hardiness & class as a top notch racehorse. When BB showed up he was one tough customer. Steroids in horses can be used as a performance enhancer. Your also right that they are used for rehabilitation after stressful workouts. Though I doubt in this case. Just an excuse for his poor performance in the Belmont.
This win of Big Brown was impressive, I don't care what he did in Belmont. That "Secretariat-esque" way he pulled away from the pack (and from the outside no less!) was just amazing, and I was screaming my head off. On Belmont day, he had an off day; happens to all athletes, like pitchers who get shelled and quarterbacks who throw three interceptions in a game and no touchdowns. Given another day, Big Brown would have creamed that pack at Belmont. He's a great horse.

He had himself won the Breeders Cup Juvenile in near record time.....He won the Florida Derby and then won the Wood Memorial.....but in doing so he suffered a 1/4 crack in his front left foot....They patched the crack and he went off as the favorite in the Kentucky Derby...but ran a dull race and finished 5th....His name Unbridled's Song!

Big Brown lucked out being born in a year of remarkably weak 3year old colts. When you run against competition who are slow early, slow in the miiddle, and then really slow late, you should be able to draw off if you have any decent G1 quality at all. BB is no monster. If he faced the likes of say Silver Charm, Real Quiet, Afleet Alex, FunnyCide, Smarty Jones, ect there would be no talk of Secretariat-like crap bellowed about this horse. This horse isn't in Curlins league.

A cracked hoof and a 1/4 crack are not the same. 1/4 crack is worse and is a small split of the hoof wall at the hair line where hair meets hoof. Occurs in either of the front feet. Treatment(non medical)these days will insure 100% soundness of foot structure.
NY medications rules are strict. If BB is lame a blind man will be able to see it. If he doesn't win or is injured it won't be due
to the 1/4 crack. He should win with 1 leg tied to his ear. The Japanese horse lacks racing experience.

I'm not going to give away the mathematical formula--but it goes like this. Take each horse's G2 races (1 1/8th Mile and greater) and G1 races. Adjust them for distance (requires cross-multiplication) and weight or grade breaks that result in position being held as well as reward their close over the last 1/4 Mile. Only a win by Big Brown could deliver the Triple Crown, however.
Big Brown is gorgeous and there's no doubt he'll win, but this year lacked the drama of an Affirmed-Alydar rivalry. There will never be another 'Affirmed'.
I kinda had a problem with adding 13 to the Beyer figure to get the timeform number. I have read that Big Brown's Timeform number (after the KY Derby) was 132 the second highest for a 3 yr old (some aussie horse is 135).
To put this in comparision Curlin this year recieved a timeform of 131. This would be a very interesting race to see. If BB and Curlin don't meet at the BC then how about they do a match race at Gulfstream park in FL sometime in Nov or Dec.
Match races between Thoroughbreds are now banned, to the best of my knowledge, after the Great Match with Ruffian and Foolish Pleasure in 1975. But what I would give to see that...!
If you are a European thoroughbred racing fan and only familiar with Timeform, read on. The Belmont Stakes "cheat sheets" will usually make mention of something akin to a Beyer Figure. Add about 13 points to a Beyer Figure and you have Europe's Timeform. With the Belmont Stakes lineup in your own standard, you will now have a greater appreciation of thoroughbreds on this side of the Atlantic. Cheers!

Dennis of Cork is in this race. I predict he will place. As for Casino Drive is impressive but Big Brown has the breeding and his sheer size. Honestly rick dutrow wherever you are you do know that big brown is a better horse for what he has done this year. But is he a better horse than these at a 1 1/2??? We just don't know HOWEVER drawing post one might be just what you needed if your experienced rider gets solid positioning behind Drive and D'tara and gets a clean trip down there. I really hope Brown has enough to pull away from Drive and hold off the coming finishers. I still say this race is ripe for a closer because of the pace.
What do you make of Dutrow guaranteeing the cold exacta of a Big Brown, Casino Drive finish? Dutrow does have $50,000,000.00 dollars and reasons at stake in claiming this as Big Brown will likely remain this whopping cash cow when he goes into stud. Dutrow can sleep easily knowing that he regularly hires Casino Drive's jockey for the Belmont, E Prado. If a Triple Crown winner in 2008 gives good face to thoroughbred racing in its current condition, so be it. I'll then keep my mouth shut.

To me, the most disappointing part of the Big Brown story isn't the failure to win the triple crown. Kent Desormeaux said in several interviews that he never pushed Big Brown to full throttle. It's a shame that we'll never know what kind of speed this amazing horse really had. He had the potential to be as legendary as Secretariat.

Dont blame smarty for being retired because his owner's have no backbone, because he would have won the haskell and whatever other grade 1 brown won. 2004 was a better class of 3 year olds as well, He ran good in the derby slop, he had just a good preakness as brown and plus his belmont shows that smarty was better

yes the Belmont proved nothing; how can you prove he was better when he came in last, regardless of quarter cracks? And don't begin with the naturally talented card, Smarty was undefeated in 6 straight leading up to the Derby and was the 17 post on a bad track at Churchill. He did just as good as Brown in the first two triple crown races so there can be no argument there.

And his other two grade one wins that you always bring up were unimpressive at best, He had to hold off a 20-1 in Coal Play at the Haskell and Proudinsky in the Monmouth Stakes, races that he should have won handily. And Brown was retired for an injury as well, so he is just as injury prone as Smarty, he only ran in 8 races, in fact one less than Smarty. Maybe you should read up on your Big Brown stats.

Records don't matter when they enter the starting gate. Smarty didn't run on steroids! Take Big Brown off steroids he gets his butt kicked. I always thought he was overrated. After the preakness I was convinced Big Brown was for real. Then the info. surfaced about his steroid injections & I lost all respect for him. I wonder how he would haved fared in KD if he wasn't on roids?

Run Pleasant Colony over as a 2yo. Say what you want but PleasantC. fractions in the Belmont were faster than the previous one. What was Big Browns? Did he even cross the finish line?Pleasant C. was also a top sire for years after his race career.Time will tell what Big Brown will produce. I hope he is a good sire because those foot problems really hampered him. I really thought he would be a triple Crown winner after those 2 dominating performances.

At least Curlin showed up for his races. Travelled across the globe & brought the Dubai trophy back to the states. Demonstrating his hardiness & class as a top notch racehorse. When BB showed up he was one tough customer. Steroids in horses can be used as a performance enhancer. Your also right that they are used for rehabilitation after stressful workouts. Though I doubt in this case. Just an excuse for his poor performance in the Belmont.

This win of Big Brown was impressive, I don't care what he did in Belmont. That "Secretariat-esque" way he pulled away from the pack (and from the outside no less!) was just amazing, and I was screaming my head off. On Belmont day, he had an off day; happens to all athletes, like pitchers who get shelled and quarterbacks who throw three interceptions in a game and no touchdowns. Given another day, Big Brown would have creamed that pack at Belmont. He's a great horse.

There once was a great thoroughbred, whose father had won the Triple crown. Big Brown lucked out being born in a year of remarkably weak 3year old colts. When you run against competition who are slow early, slow in the miiddle, and then really slow late, you should be able to draw off if you have any decent G1 quality at all. BB is no monster. If he faced the likes of say Silver Charm, Real Quiet, Afleet Alex, FunnyCide, Smarty Jones, ect there would be no talk of Secretariat-like crap bellowed about this horse. This horse isn't in Curlins league.

Never forget that there was one thoroughbred that was actually a scratch from Race 11 that finishes ahead of Big Brown in this race itself. It's the Japanese-trained, Japanese-owned Casino Drive who will likely share much the same fate as Big Brown--but in the Breeder's Cup Classic.

Look things happen in horse racing. He drew the inside gate somewhat of an unfamiliar position. Was boxed early and bawked. Then it looked like the heat got to him as he had no energy after going 1 Mile.

A cracked hoof and a 1/4 crack are not the same. 1/4 crack is worse and is a small split of the hoof wall at the hair line where hair meets hoof. Occurs in either of the front feet. Treatment(non medical)these days will insure 100% soundness of foot structure.
NY medications rules are strict. If BB is lame a blind man will be able to see it. If he doesn't win or is injured it won't be due
to the 1/4 crack. He should win with 1 leg tied to his ear. The Japanese horse lacks racing experience.

STACKED UP AGAINST EACH OTHER, HOW GOOD IS THIS YEAR'S BELMONT OFFERING AGAINST THE LIKES OF AN "AFFIRMED?"
I'm not going to give away the mathematical formula--but it goes like this. Take each horse's G2 races (1 1/8th Mile and greater) and G1 races. Adjust them for distance (requires cross-multiplication) and weight or grade breaks that result in position being held as well as reward their close over the last 1/4 Mile. Only a win by Big Brown could deliver the Triple Crown, however.

Big Brown is gorgeous and there's no doubt he'll win, but this year lacked the drama of an Affirmed-Alydar rivalry. There will never be another 'Affirmed'.

I kinda had a problem with adding 13 to the Beyer figure to get the timeform number. I have read that Big Brown's Timeform number (after the KY Derby) was 132 the second highest for a 3 yr old (some aussie horse is 135).
To put this in comparision Curlin this year recieved a timeform of 131. This would be a very interesting race to see. If BB and Curlin don't meet at the BC then how about they do a match race at Gulfstream park in FL sometime in Nov or Dec.

Match races between Thoroughbreds are now banned, to the best of my knowledge, after the Great Match with Ruffian and Foolish Pleasure in 1975. But what I would give to see that...!

EUROPEAN CONVERSION FOR BEYER FIGURE
If you are a European thoroughbred racing fan and only familiar with Timeform, read on. The Belmont Stakes "cheat sheets" will usually make mention of something akin to a Beyer Figure. Add about 13 points to a Beyer Figure and you have Europe's Timeform. With the Belmont Stakes lineup in your own standard, you will now have a greater appreciation of thoroughbreds on this side of the Atlantic. Cheers!

First of all you guys who are not vets do not work with horses please I appreciate your concern. NO trainer, owner or any steward worth their salt and value their reputations would put a horse in any race, horse show ect if it endangered him. BIG BROWN is racing because he is fit to do so. Dennis of Cork is in this race. I predict he will place. As for Casino Drive is impressive but Big Brown has the breeding and his sheer size. GO BIG BROWN Your ggsire Northern Dancer and Canada are watching.

Macho Again will beat him in the Belmont! The extra distance will take its toll on BB's cracked hoof. Single Macho over BB and wheel the rest. Superfecta will be huge!!!

I say casino gives him for the first time all Big brown wants on the front end and more in this race. Cause you gotta believe with post 5 edgar will be forwardly placed near the front i don't see him being too far back like in the peter pan win. And thats the question mark will someone catch them? Or will brown draw away believe it or not i say in a gallant effort and you heard it hear first!!! THIS WILL BE A CLOSE FINISH with BROWN WINNING. And that would be GREAT for this game FINALLY

Honestly rick dutrow wherever you are you do know that big brown is a better horse for what he has done this year. But is he a better horse than these at a 1 1/2??? We just don't know HOWEVER drawing post one might be just what you needed if your experienced rider gets solid positioning behind Drive and D'tara and gets a clean trip down there. I really hope Brown has enough to pull away from Drive and hold off the coming finishers. I still say this race is ripe for a closer because of the pace.

What do you make of Dutrow guaranteeing the cold exacta of a Big Brown, Casino Drive finish? Dutrow does have $50,000,000.00 dollars and reasons at stake in claiming this as Big Brown will likely remain this whopping cash cow when he goes into stud. Dutrow can sleep easily knowing that he regularly hires Casino Drive's jockey for the Belmont, E Prado. If a Triple Crown winner in 2008 gives good face to thoroughbred racing in its current condition, so be it. I'll then keep my mouth shut.
