  • hey scotty, can you tell me the pros and cons of a turbocharged engine, like does it make the engine less reliable?

  • How about torque? Do you get any more of that with DI and turbos or is it just the HP that goes up?

  • @sangolt88 mainly horsepower, but a little torque,

  • @scottykilmer Explain.

  • @scottykilmer Getting more horsepower doesn't always give more torque. I'm all for DI, but its more expensive and its cant be fixed as easily.

  • this is why i love ford (im a gm guy) they did the sho the ecoboost and so on

  • i hate all this modern car crap

  • that stang isnt direct lol

  • I disagree with turbo part. Even with water cooled, it's best to at least let the car idle for 30sec to a full minute.

    -Owns a 300zx

  • @justjosh0123 the new ones are different, yours is old and yes, requires that.

  • @scottykilmer scotty, my car keeps running hot when Im stading still at the light or in traffic. I changed The thermostat, waterpump and collant is of recommended amount. What iswrong with my car scotty?

  • @TJRMultimedia either a worn out radiator, or bad cooling fan.

  • @scottykilmer what are you thoughts on the Toyota Prius or the hybrid technology in general? Is it worth the price?

  • @whole27 not a big fan, watch my other video by typing "hybrid car problems" on the search engine of the scottykilmer channel on youtube.

  • Kind of Reminds Me of a Diesel set up. :-)

  • Hey Scotty any chance on making a video on how to look for boost leaks on a turbo charged vehicle? or any videos on replacing turbos, intercoolers etc?

Thanks for the great vids :)

  • @46METALGUIT46 perhaps if I get one to work on. I'd just use a smoke machine though. and replacing them is just bolt off bolt on, but the bolts can be Hell to get off from corrosion.

  • Scotty, I've got a 2001 Taurus that's fuel gauge doesn't read right do you have a video for fixing the fuel gauge yet?

  • @randomperson001 no, but watch my video "replacing a fuel pump in your car" that's a ford, and it's the same process, you must remove the gas tank to get to the fuel sending unit. Scotty

  • @MrDtrol You may have just bought the wrong car for your driving style. If it's brand new, there's nothing you can do but drive slower and do what you're already doing.

  • Scotty. I have a silly question for you. How exactly do you "hit vtec" I have a B16a2 vtec dohc engine, and its VTEC, but I don't know if I've ever hit vtec. Please forgive my ignorance.

  • Statistics have shown that more Americans are towing heavier loads each day. On average each American will tow 4 000 000 lbs. of payload weekly. This is why the EcoBoost flying-saucer technology has been introduced. If the engine runs out of fuel while towing a skyscraper, the turbos will develop anti-gravity lift. You will get home safely without incurring a $6000.00/hr. mechanic fee. The New Ford easily pass the 120 mph barrier test.

  • and how long will the eco boost last 100000 km

  • Bangla fanel songs

  • how would you disconnect the fuel line on this thing when you have lots of fuel pressure to the lines?

  • @bryanharricharan VERY carefully. Scotty

  • Scotty I have a '97 Lincoln Tiown Car with a check engine P0446 code. I have no clue on what it could be. What will you recomend to check first? Thanks

  • @lamaslindacrew often a bad evap cannister purge valve, go to a parts store and they can sell you one and show you where it is. Scotty

  • @lamaslindacrew (P0446 Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Control Circuit Malfunction), it sounds like a bad purge valve

  • I just want a gasoline car that isn't thirsty for gasoline and isn't a hybrid, I don't need enough horse power to tow anything, just something to get me from point A to point B that has 4 doors, and is squeezing every penny I buy on gasoline

  • i love mustsng gt 2011 & i wish i can get one in my life!

  • Scotty when I got my first car my father told me to always let the car "warm up" before going on any drive. Today people don't say to let cars warm up. As I got older and knew more about cars I could see why "warming up" the car was important. Some cars have aluminum heads and cast iron blocks and that would mean the two different metals heat up at a different rate from cold. My question is do modern cars still need to be "warmed up?" If not, why not?

  • @moofushu they are different now, fuel injection systems are more sophisticated than carburetors, so no warm up is needed. Scotty

  • how make my 2006 ford focus fast?? more hp! aside from intake and changing my spark plug!. ty!

  • @MrFishdale it costs ton to make cars faster, like super or turbo charging them. Be happy it runs fine, the faster you go, the lower your gas mileage. Scotty

  • @MrFishdale The intake will help with throttle response but spark plugs wont do anything unless they are dirty and bring it back to what it was before its a bunch of bull when people say that the fancy type of spark plugs do anything like the bosch 4.

  • @MrFishdale Not only does it cost a ton (possible more then a new car), extensively modifying your car makes it unreliable. I've been down that road and it was an exercise in total frustration. I would highly recommend that you do not modify a car used for daily driving.

  • no offense but anyone who drives a bus like that doesnt need more horsepower, they need a garage to hide that thing.and I say imports over all,I drive a h22 honda accord thats will burn most of these newer cars and It looks better. Honda's are one of the best quality car brands out there.

  • and that's something even clyde barrow would appreciate hahahaha what a great line!

  • Chevy runs deep.

  • how can i increase my 2002 honda crv's horsepower and gas mileage?

  • @sonny2123 you can spend a ton supercharging it, but realize power and gas mileage boosting don't go together in add on stuff. You either get more power, or better gas mileage, not both. Scotty

  • Hello Scotty. Can you make some videos on the new 2011 Explorer. It's a great vehicle but has multiple engineering issues. Fan assembly problems, A- pillar rattles, overheating issues, and MFT issues. It's something Ford engineers can't seem to get right. Can you tell me about the 2011 Explorer and how it works and why it gets those problems?

  • @undertake782 I make em as I fix actual cars or have a demo. so if I work on one, I'll make a video. Scotty

  • its a mazda engine

  • @DaveTube24 no, your "mazda" engine is a ford engine. sorry to burst your bubble.

  • to settle this argument, american engines are NOT powerfull and have terrible fuel consumpsion

  • thumbs up if 3:00 was a waste of gas

  • A rocket compared to what? A honda Civic?

  • @DrGrovesvideos test drive one and you'll see how much guts it has. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer

Well I guess my comment was a little ignorant considering it is a fairly large vehicle.

  • @DrGrovesvideos my Honda civic destroys mustang cobras. b18 vtec twin turbo 11 sec car

  • @brvoiscool

You're a part of a very small group of honda civics though.

    Videos or it didnt happen.

  • @brvoiscool You Honda guys make me laugh. Yes you can make a Honda very fast. But if you put the same amount of time and money into an already fast car like a Mustang Cobra, then you would be insanely fast. My favorite is a Ford V8 into a Mazda Miata. That car will outrun a Vette!!!

  • @slayerman95 i would say the valves are bent and the pistons are damaged one of the valves had to be open when the piston comes up on it and if one piston has no compression get a new engine but get all the timeing belts replaced first

  • i love this guy.

    Scotty you are the best!

  • this system is based on the high pressure common rail diesel, but adapted to gasoline engines.

we have direct gasoline engines and common rail diesel powered engines available all around Europe for more than 10 years, mostly 4 bangers.

the problem with these systems is that they are very prone to fail, since they use many parts to achieve performance. Turbochargers are one one of them.

now is time for you americans to change that crazy way of driving and save oil, money and lower emissions.Peace

  • vw have GTI, Gasoline Turbo Injection since 80s , europeans car are faster and have less fuel consumption

  • @octanbf3 they are not faster, just better gas mileage. You can't have both. americans have giant fast engines that often get low gas mileage, that is true. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer I'll give the Americans that, they can definitely develop the best technology to make a car go fast in a straight line, but leave the cornering to the Europeans

  • @scottykilmer Scotty, octanbf3 is right. European vehicles tend to have better performance than anyone else in the market

  • @scottykilmer Not true. Turbocharging accomplishes both, increasing power and torque by increasing compression, and using the same amount of fuel per charge. In actuality, they accomplish roughly the same power and speed as an American engine, but in a much smaller, inherently more efficient powerplant.

I dare you to get an American engine setup, below 2-liter, and have it run as much power as a European or Japanese engine of the same size. (Assuming any forced induction system is retained)

  • @SchizoFilms well theoretically it does both, but not in reality. Most guys with a turbocharger end up driving so fast their gas mileage goes down. Only a granny driving 55 will get better gas mileage. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer The temptation is there, but the technology actually does it. I know I get better mileage on my turbo.

  • @octanbf3 ERM GT stands for (grand tourer). and the Europeans call it petroleum, gasoline is the American terminology.

  • @mksav1 Plus while I'm on the subject of proper terminology, during the late eighties car manufacturers put the injection letter " I " on car models eg, GT I, SR I, but then they started to appear on DIESELS as I suppose to bullshit the buyer. (bullshit) because all diesels are injection by there basic design,

  • @octanbf3 Man you are fucked up, GTI does not stand for Gasoline Turbo Injection, it stand for grand touring injection.

  • @slayerman95 try a new chain, they don't normally bend valves in toyotas. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer browning a5 with a cutts comp??

  • @scottykilmer your message was blank

  • @backwoodsctryboy Yes, you have a good eye. Scotty

  • Wow, very cool. Does it still have a fuel pump in the tank or just that 2k psi on the engine? Also have you heard about these new engines that are suppose to be comming out of Russia? I guess they act like a rotary engine & there's no reciprocating parts such as crank & connecting rods.

  • @Michiganborn1969 it has two pumps, one to the top pump on the engine, and the big one on the engine.Scotty

  • Great videos, great advice, and sweet mustang :D

  • @2:05 you only need to cool them if you were hitting boost and then stopping in a parking lot and turning off the engine immediately.

  • woah damn that mother fucker at the begginning scared me

  • Love your videos scotty! could watch them all day :)

  • How do i make my 2004 mitsubishi eclipse v6 go FASTER?

  • @Marines405 sell it and buy a mustang instead. that thing is fast enough for what it is, if you super charged it, you would just end up blowing the engine. scotty

  • @scottykilmer

    What is a turbocharger?

  • @wiigamer136 It's a device that uses exhaust gas from the engine to spin its blades REALLY fast so they can suck in air and pump it at pressure into the engine cylinders. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer

    Is it expensive?

  • @wiigamer136 Yes, very expensive. Scotty

  • @wiigamer136 You can find a decent turbo kit for around $900 online, no including installation, what ever you do dont make the ricer mistake of adding NOS, without upgrading your engine, cams, heads, valves, exhaust, etc first

  • @cgk1993

LOL. Thanks for the info. I'll stay away from the ricers cuz they are crap.

  • @scottykilmer As long as he kept it in low boost (somewhere around or under 10psi) with stock internals he would be fine. Which would still be worth it. Once he has money to rebuild the engine with forged goodies he can step up the boost. I wouldn't suggest doing this without upgrading the clutch and the rest of the drivetrain first though.

  • hello i have seen a lot of you keep it up man you have helped me alot i have a ford and im thinking of keeping her but she needs some work i dont care what any one says you are cool your fan rob

  • lol the Australian fords are way better than American ones

  • lol my bros Evo would own tht mustang

  • Hey scotty you said you own old cars so i hope this is not a custmers car your driving like that LOL !!!

  • @capt1570 NO, it was a test car, and I test em out royally. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer

How can i increase HP on my Mitsubishi 3000gt??

  • @ALABERTO19 that's fast enough, but if you want faster, get a WHOLE lot of money out and put a supercharger kit on it. Scotty

  • @ALABERTO19

Just get a second gen VR4.

    Stock 178mph gps confirmed.

  • Ford Rules!!!!!! I love Ford, Dependable, reliable, powerful!!!!

  • I love these newer "complex engines as y'all call them. So much more tuning capability. And tuning equals power, which equals fun!

  • Okay, we caught you speeding this time, Scotty - AND what's with the gun!!! Lol! Never trust a mechanic who drinks??? I say, be wary of mechanics with big guns! :-p

  • he has alot of knowledge, but please put your seat belt on, we need you Scotty. Beam me up.

  • @alaskaedward Hey, I drive motorcycles. Scotty

  • i like him v much

  • @scottykilmer I wouldnt say that water cooled CHRA (center housing rotating assembly) don't NEED to be idled before shut-down (like you said) because they do. I've been rebuilding turbos for 20 years and although water cooled jackets are nice, I rebuild just as many water cooled as old oil cooled. When you take it apart, it's obvious why they failed - HEAT. Whether from racing or overboosting, heat plays a large factor and turbos should always be idled down for 30s-1m just as a precaution.

  • @scottykilmer what I'm saying is that a new or rebuilt turbocharger costs a whole lot more than 30s-1m of your time. To test this theory, open your hood next time you've driven for a while and listen to the coolant boiling inside of the CHRA - you can hear it on every turbo solely because CHRA's are so small - there isn't a lot of surface area so the coolant stays in the jacket boiling away. If you don't want to sit in your car - just buy a nice Turbo Timer instead. Good videos!

    ProjectCarTV

  • @ItsDamianLOL which is why i always let my car idle after a drive.

sure it's water cooled and i have an oil cooler too, but id rather use up about a minute of my time than spend a crap load of money i dont have on a new turbo...

*id rather save my money and get a bigger, better turbo. :D

  • @dwnrety1 Especially if you have to go to a dealership for your turbo. I'm lucky in that I own a turbocharger repair shop and have been in business for close to 20 years. I can repair and or modify any type of turbo - so my work is free labor. There arent a whole lot of turbocharged cars on the roads these days (from the factory) so a majority are old - or are the consumer variety like Scotties whioch have small turbos from the factory. Small turbo = heat = heat destroys turbos. Idle it down FTW

  • Ha Ha! the camera man didn't cut off the video at the end. It was supposed to look like he peeled out down the street but they didn't cut off the video so he just takes off real fast and stops. Hey scotty do u think other car manufacturers will soon adopt the gasoline direct injection systems???? that would be cool!

  • THis is awesome, i like your style.

  • i bet you he takes a snorts before each video..

  • @kichansilva Nope, that's just me, I never drink when working on cars, stay far away from drinking mechanics. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer lol He meant cocaine (I think anyways)

  • All this fancy crap they put into cars today... This is why i like older Vehicles, like my 98 Grand Cherokee. They are so easy to work on, not much electrical mostly mechanical. These Newer Grand Cherokee's i must say i pray for people who own them 10 years from now...

Pray for them and there wallet

  • @1ownjoo2 You've got a point there, BUT your 98 cherokee gets pretty lousy gas mileage, and that's why they make em so complex today. With complexity comes expensive repairs, of course. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer

The 4.0 isnt too bad, i get in the city around 17mpg, and on the highway/freeway i get easily 21-22mpg. I've tested this by driving it with a full tank until it was empty and calculated the MPG with the miles i drove. That's about the same as today's more complicated SUV gets if you dont add in a hybrid. The 5.9 tho, i need to use 93 octane and city i get around 12mpg and highway is around 18. Id rather own a 5.9 v8 with 245hp/345torque vs a 140 hp hybrid with no power

  • @1ownjoo2 Well, for myself, even a 98 is too new. I drive all pre 96 cars, so they don't have obd II inspection procedures on them and it doesn't matter what the lights say, the yearly inspection runs on a dyno. I'm showing technology here, and yes, it's getting insanely complex these days. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer exactly why i have an 87 lol

although with all the fancy crap toyota added to my car i still have a crap load of wiring and electronics..

  • @scottykilmer I'm a big fan of most late 80's early 90's automobiles myself. Seems like 89 was a great year for most manifacturers.

  • @1ownjoo2 Honestly, half the stuff they do for gas mileage does next to nothing. The new CRX replacement gets WORSE gas mileage as a hybrid than they did back in the 80s! It's not like it's only 1-2 MPG difference either, it's a rather large one. Plus you have to switch between "modes" to get the car to perform the way you want so it's not like they can claim a performance increase either.

  • is this guy mental ?

  • @aqstermole Yes, I'm Mental As Anything (also the title of an indie rock band.) Scotty

  • @scottykilmer Great band too :-)

  • @aqstermole You think he's mental in this one, go to what to do if your car won't start!

  • Again info is strait, concise and easy to understand, videos for every subject change ,so everything is easy to follow ,your on to something, a mechanic with flair and dares to be different.

  • hubpages.com/hub/How-to-add-horsepower-with-minimal-money

this site will show you how to add horsepower

  • Lmao, this guy reminds me of Jiminy Glick... contorting all over the place to get the right shot.

wtf was with the 5ft burnout at the end? xD

  • @Redrum4409 I live in a short block. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer

Hey man, good vid overall... I liked it.

  • @scottykilmer yo scotty keep up the good work i have learn a lot of stuff from you, btw im still haven't figure it out whats draining my brother battery and his poor idle i still haven't clean the idle control valve btw what car u drive? i drive a 93 nissan 300zx with a supra engine 2jzgte btw im pushing 567hp and i get pretty good mileage on highway cant complain

  • @Hebert6760 seafoam!

  • Very good video, well presented very watchable...

  • @ camp".. I agree totally..very expencive.

  • scotty, stick with your TOYOTA!

  • The end result of all this engineering is high cost for repairs.

  • @campauchicken Well, I certainly agree with that. I have to fix the stupid things when they break, and to say the least, it aint a gettin any easier. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer Im a gm guy, and i always will be. but the idea of the ecoboost is something from ford i actually like.

  • BURN RUBBER SCOTTY!!!!!! LIGHT THEM UP!!!!!!!! I got a 1967 pontiac gto

  • Ripping around someones neighborhood is a great idea... NOT.

  • @speedfreak247 It's my neighborhood and no one is home when I shoot videos in the morning, they're all at work. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer scott dont listen to people like speedfreakn247.. he's just a but head, keep doing your videos man ur awesome my hole family watches!

  • Great video Scotty...thanks for explaining the engine. I love the Flex...very cool car!

  • fuk ford it sh!t

  • lol i thought you were going to say cold air intake

  • Toyota Corolla 95 :)

  • hey scotty,,,do you have some video if how to change the ECU from honda civic???

  • @bbblopez No, but any ECU change is simple physically, You just remove the old one by unplugging the harness and plug the new one in. BUT, most modern cars need the ecus reprogrammed to work on a specific car. Scotty Kilmer

  • hey i was wondering if it was really worth it rebuilding a 2001 saturn 1.9 dohc engine yourself because i just need to replace the rod bearings .. but i wanna know what else i have to do while replacing it ?

  • @axe2210 Not worth it, they don't make em anymore, get a used junk yard engine if you want to keep it. Scotty Kilmer

  • hey i was wondering if it was really worth it rebuilding a 2001 saturn 1.9 dohc engine yourself because i just need to replace the rod bearings .. but i wanna know what else i have todo while replacing it ?

  • so basically, as the hybrid grows..the +g. shade tree and newbie will need to train in hybrid repair? i dont think it will be easy to work on the american cars in the future without a class or certificate

  • @ballershanelle All cars are becoming computerized, regardless of country. Computers can manage the engine better than humans can.

  • @ballershanelle Hey, MANY companies are out there with great auto software you can run on your laptop. I do that ALL the time when I fix em. They aren't going away, but you can easily learn IF you want to. Scotty Kilmer

  • Does the Lucas Fuel Injector cleaner work? i hear none of those cleaners work. whats your input

  • @zztopgearhead1 They all do a little bit, but putting them in the gas tank dilutes them so they can't do all that much unless you're almost out of gas. I've never used the lucas cleaner so I don't know how it works. Scotty Kilmer

  • hey scotty i was wondering how to put a posi unit on a rwd car.. would you have any chance to make a vid, im sure its that easy..

  • @diistriitglow No video yet, but IF you find one that fits your driveshaft and wheels, it's just bolting the old one off and the new one on. The trick is finding one that fits without having to do major modifications on the drive train to make it fit. Scotty Kilmer

  • i have a question: if i buy fuel injectors that are usually made for turbocharged cars, and install them on a N/A car, will it increase Horse Power?

  • @racer07 Injectors are custom made for each car and computer system. As such, you can't just guess and switch them out randomly. the air fuel mixture has to be perfect, and that requires a lot of engineering and software. Scotty Kilmer

  • Hi Scotty! Luv your vids!

Here's my issue I have a 2000 gmc yukon-denali with a gm v-8 the check engine light comes on intermitently, I checked it out and it tells me PO174 system too lean bank # 2 I hate to guess. Would I be correct to say that it is the oxygen sensor going bad on the passenger side before the catalytic converter upstream and "Not" the 0/2 sensor on the passenger side after the catalytic converter ??? your opinion would be a great help..thanks Scotty....

  • (w w w).refresheverything.(c o m)/secondarytransmission

  • Seems that direct injection really works. Holden's (GM) new SIDI engines have a 3.0L V6 that produces more power than any 3.8L V6 before it

  • Nice Mustang you got there!

  • Dorky Name that Ford came up with and the Technology is loooong overdue for Gas engines. Gas engines are about at their limit for efficiency and still lag behind Diesels. Unless there is a major breakthrough in gas technology, you'd still have to defeat physics since gasoline has much less BTU energy per gallon.

  • Tis true, diesel has more inherent energy inside it than gasoline, and gasoline has more than ethanol. Scotty Kilmer

  • @KB3MMX lol

  • gay

  • You wouldn't think it was gay if you were driving one. They run like scalded apes. Scotty Kilmer

  • DIrect Injection seems to be a good idea but for somone like me that never goes on highways and takes city streets everywhere it just seems that ill coast 3x the price not only to buy to to also maintain my Daewoo needs no maintenance whatsoever thats why i drive it

  • That car looks like the new English Mini, Scotty can you please post a video on setting up points and also setting over head valves my father told me something about putting the car in gear and when 2 were rocking setting different valves it confused me, I also wanted to learn when do you use gasket paste? exhausts I was told paper gaskets also with head gaskets or rocker covers do you use it? I feel daft asking but I want to learn Thanks Scotty

  • Yea,
