The original legend of Zelda is, in a nutshell:

The Princess Zelda was put into a deep sleep and only the power of the Triforce could wake her. Boy named Link finds it and so nobody ever forgets the legend, the King declares that all the girls of the royal line must be named Zelda. Look it up for more detail, I guess.
