I just finished reading two bios, one about Little Walter and the other about Muddy Waters. Muddy asked that his red tele be buried with him. It wouldn't quite fit, so they broke the neck and put the two pieces inside the casket.
Check it out, everybody! A young Jerry Portnoy on harp, Willie "Big Eyes" Smith on drums, Pinetop on keys, all told, vintage blues by the meisters of Chicago!
who is this harp player, man, this is good music, children should be exposed to this instead of the stuff thats rammed down their mind today,, thanks for sharing this video.
@TURBOKNUL666 He only plays with the best. He did alot of work with Eric Clapton too, like his "from de Cradle" album, you should check it out if you haven't yet of course ;)
i didnt liked music when i was 13 years old, one night i was listening to radio switching stations.....and there it was, Mr. Muddy Waters "can't get no griddin , whats the matter with the mill" YEAH :)
@goodymagoo Playing blues in 1st position, especially the way Jerry is playing in both the upper and lower octaves, is harder than playing in 2nd position, generally speaking... at least for me...
@goodymagoo He definitely switched to a G Harp to play in 1st position... at 2:18, you can see Jerry put his C harp down on his amp, and pick up the other harp.... you could still use a C harp since the song is in G... try your G harp at 2:48 and see... have fun !
Very best version of Caldonia ever! Portnoy kills on this - love the high-end blow bends down to the 2-draw full step riff on his solo!
Does anyone know if he changed to a G harp for the blow-bends (1st position) or stuck with the C harp (song is in G)??? I try and cover this but those blow bends on a C harp can get mighty squeeky!!
splendido!

@cedricleecason Yes, song is in G... Jerry plays a C harp in 2nd position, then switches to a G harp in 1st position at around 2:48... so good !

@airmojo I stand corrected. Thanks. Worked hard to get those high ones to pop just right on my C harp, but it works better with the switch.

Check out my version, of course I'm no Muddy or Louis Jordan, but I love the song.
I agree this is a good band, but I like the original line-up w/ Jimmy Rogers, Otis Spann and Little Walter.

To my opinion this whas Muddy's best band, along with a young Bob Margolin and Jerry Portnoy.

any1 knows how to play it? I'm a newbie guitar player. Is it G, C, D?
cholody666 3 years ago
Pretty much:)
ZackPomerleau 3 years ago
its pretty much standard blues. except the turnaround is a 2-5-1. so if it is in G the turnaround bit would be A-D-C.
jazzciggarette 3 years ago
Altho Portnoy plays uses a C harp in 2nd position during the song, he plays his solo entirely in 1st postion on a G harp.
