  • Give the band credit for what have accomplished as apposed to who you want them to be. If you don't like them, then why waste your time complaining.

There's no such thing as a top guitarist. There's people who play very well and those who don't.

Rattle and Hum 88, you know what you're talking about.

  • THE PERFORMANCE OF THIS SONG IN ( ZOO TV LIVE IN SYDNEY ) IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN THIS !!!!!!

  • I think Edge sould have more recognition about his contribution in the band...so does Larry and Adam...I absolutely love Bono but I think the he is the only one who gets recognition. Dont forget that Edge has also made it to the top 100 guitarists and in a better place than Bono on the top 100 singers..

  • @mslois666 Oh My God, how can you trust in this guitarist ranks where true guitar masters like Eric Johnson do not appear at all. The Edge has a specific role in U2 and his sound is almost unique but if you consider a top guitarist you do not know but nothing about music, that´s all, top guitarist may include names like Satriani, Vai, Malmsteen, Johnson, Petrucci, Rhoads, Gilmour, Van Halen, Santana, Jack Lee, etc etc.

  • @mgljimcmgl I'm talking about Rolling Stone´s guitar rank...

  • @mslois666 Honestly, this rank is a shame, it´s more about commercial purposes rather than music issues.

  • @mgljimcmgl ok, besides that you don't think that the Edge is a good guitarist?

  • @mslois666 Quite frankly, there are better guitarists than him, even unknown people who will naver have the chance to shine in a stage, anyway The Edge has produced an unique sound and he is a music legend for his contribution in U2, no question about it.

  • @mgljimcmgl well there may even be talented people who have never tought a guitar, you can't do such a good research :P unfortunately, I have no idea about music, I'm just a listener...

  • @mgljimcmgl It really depends on your definition of "top guitarist". If you're going for technique and skill and dexterity with the instrument, sure, Edge does not belong on that list. But many would consider Edge a top guitarist in that he has a very unique tone, he's made a whole area of the instrument his own, and he's a great side-man guitarist, he's a great band man, carrying the music with well-written, memorable riffs and emotions in his playing. He's a minimalist, great rock guitarist.

  • proud to share my B-DAY with him

  • guitar hero!

  • OMG!! I love this video, even though it makes me feel old since I was a freshman in high school when it originally aired on MTV.

  • muy buen video!! genio Edge!!

  • the edge es un capo!!!

  • I still love this song. :D

  • How HOT is he in this video?!?! *_*

  • I remember this, the 1993 MTV Music Awards... back when MTV actually had music, huh.. strange.

  • Is it even *legal* for one person to be that cool?

  • edge is so damn cool.............

  • Just got through watching MST3K's take on the Ed Wood Jr. film "The Sinister Urge." There are clips from this film at 0:06 and 0:12. Cool.

  • A lot of people don't realize that he had just divorced his wife when he wrote this song. The whole song is about the numbness one puts themselves into to be protected from the insults and orders from the opposing party.

  • this is the coolest thing of the whole universe.

  • Feel free to take off your pants and jacket...

  • One of the best TV performances ever... by anyone. Amazing.

  • One of the best TV performances ever... by anyone.

  • Soooo extracool, really loving this one.

    Edge rules!

  • not ..

  • Im a Bonolover but Edge looks hot here >:D

  • Damn what a performance!

He only sits and say some words but I love it!

  • I remember watching this when it originally came on and tripping out a little (in a good way) when The Edge walked out on stage alone.

God, I was such an Edge fangirl back in the day.

Who am I kidding? I'm STILL an Edge fangirl! =P

  • i seen this on tv once were the backgroung video was full screen with better sound, has anyone seen it on you tube, i cant find it

  • Haven't seen that one. In fact, this is the ONLY video of this particular performance I've seen.

  • I have been looking for this video for a long time! THANK YOU VERY MUCH! I wish they would bring this back on the next leg of 360!

  • You're welcome :) While NUMB would be great, I'd much rather see Discotheque. Can you imagine Discotheque and Crazy Tonight paired togther? Woah!

  • i love the claw just like I loved zoo tv. Thats whats great abt U2. They reinvent and stay relevant.

  • U2 wrote "Miami"

  • Once upon a time, U2 performed with a sort of rock star superconfidence that said "who cares what the audience wants?" Only a band as ballsy as U2 could pull off minimalist performance art at the MTV Pop Nonsense Music Awards and make it work. U2 needs to revisit this idea after they send The Claw back to Disneyland storage.

  • U2 took the work of Emergency Broadcast Network and brought it to the masses (thankfully).

  • @RyanInLA

You are absolutely right, thank you for this commen!

  • @RyanInLA I don't think there's a rule that says, "every Song has to be performed live in front of an Audience." A classic example would be "I Want Your Sex." Video is just fine.

  • i'd love if he do this song unplugged..........

  • I think this is as "unplugged" as you can get for this song :D

  • LOVE IT

  • i personally think this song is bad ass

  • this reminds me of that episode of the simpsons wen homer is in the b sharps and barry get al artistic at the end....i wud like a plum floating in perfume served in a mans top hat

  • Which episodes is that?

  • wat?

  • oh my god i cant believe this haha

  • This live performance has helped me realize that it's the music video that led to like this song so much. Still like the song, probly my fav. U2 song. But I just love the video so much. Funny as hell.

  • Yup! the video is great! Esp. after you've read "Until the End of the World" book!

  • E' un grande Edge :-) mi fa morire! perchè si è messo gli occhiali scuri per non farsi vedere che legge...ahahahaha

  • Do you think he actually memorized this or is he reading it?

  • I think he memorised this on the flight from Europe to the MTV awards. He never though he'd had to do this live. It's all in 'Until the End of the World" book.

  • This song is sick! I love it!

  • Monotone and repetitive. I found it boring. I don't see any emotion in this performance.

Ok, you U2 fanboys can all flame me for having an opinion now.

  • Will do! It's supposed to be monotonous and repitive...it's not just bad singing. Edge can sing quite well actually..at least, better than Bono does these days...

  • I think he has a great voice, and I know this was like that on purpose. I think it would have been better if he hadn't made it so monotone. I understand that's the way the song is and should be preformed, I just don't think it's that good.

  • Your missing the whole point to the song.. Listen to the lyrics man

  • I totally get the point of the song. I understand what he's saying through the lyrics and the performance. I still think the way he did it was boring. To me- and maybe it's different for you- listening to repetitive lyrics sung by a monotone voice is boring- no matter what the point or message of the song is.

  • i believe u that u understand the concept, but i think that ur maybe approaching it wrongly. its not music thats meant to be on ur dance mix at the club, or even on ur ipod if u want melodious tunes to liven a bus ride away. it is TOO monotonous for that, i know. but its done purely for the sake of art. the msg is more important than the tune- it is a performance piece to tell something to an audience, not hardcore rocker msc for enjoyment. its also a core piece of the Zoo TV tour msg

  • I agree- it's more about the message than anything else.

  • It's kind of like the Big Brother telling you how to live your life: go to kindergarden go to school graduate go to college graduate get a wife got an OK job have kids die

A monotonous template life with no ambition or interest.

  • I believe that was supposed to be like that. :)

  • I beLIEve it's meant to be monotonous... Kind of like brainwashing a bit.

  • @ZooKristaps

I get that its supposed to be monotonous and repetitive. It's about the lyrics and the message, not the melody. They achieved what they wanted by making the melody boring and monotonous- to focus on the message and add strength to the meaning.

I like the meaning, I just don't like listening to it since it's melodically bland- to me. I'm more about the melody in music than anything else, which is the complete antithesis of this song.

  • No, it's not about the lyrics...which are deliberately nonsensical. It's about the *sound*. Repetition, some near-psychosis (Bono's demonic backing vocals), the dystopia of Zooropa. It's what happens when the high spirits of U2 are suppressed by technology...that's the beauty of Achtung Baby and Zooropa. It's like the U2 sound and spirit threatened, and therefore warrior-like in their fighting mood.

  • @derekmok

sorry, youre right. I meant the song is about the mood. the lyrics add to the mood. my bad. I just don't like the melody. I know that's somewhat the idea of the song, but that's just me,

doesn't change that they're a fantastic band with talented musicians.

  • @popomczowzow Its exploring the theme of sensory overload.

  • @popomczowzow good comment, i agree with you !

  • u2 is basicaly the edge and bono, but the other two do some great work, maybe its cause their egos aren as big

  • I remember wathed this on TV, man that's what I call back then 'cool'.

  • weard but good

  • that are the words for Numb!

  • Yeah, smoke an ounce to this!!

  • Awesome video! I remember watching this on TV when I was 15. I loved this song!

  • I want to believe U2 is still capable of the likes of Achtung Baby and Zooropa again...

  • U2 is Timeless

  • great video!

    great song!

  • i want that episode too, is great, please someone post it

  • Ah, back when U2 tried different things. Now they cloak themselves in homogenized sameness.

  • THAT"S got to take alot of concentration, but he's Edge, what can't he do =)

  • that must be so nerve racking, considering how long the song is and he is doing solo.

    It's awesome though!!

  • ohhhhhh im numb!!!!!

  • Anybody got the beavis and butthead episode- I dont know what the episode was actually about-put part of the episode saw them watch the video for this song,in which the two lads make fun of the video- it was really really funny!

  • I heard that's one of the best ones. I'd really like someone to post it too.

  • I've got to find that episode!

  • @ZooKristaps

try this on youtube.. Beavis and Butthead - Numb - U2

    Link is not possible.

  • looks like Gary Oldman.

oh and btw as far as guitar goes, Edge is a champion amongst gunslingers.

  • Edge is God.

  • Yeah Sergio, Edge is the best!

  • yes !!!

  • "the high school crowd hasn't been very happy w/ our product lately.you can't blame them, they want new material.the old stuff has been repeated too many times.YOU CAN'T SELL THE SAME THING TO THE SAME OLD CROWD FOREVER."

  • Oh man, I remember watching this. I was glued to my television.

    The Edge = The Man

  • I upload a video where Beavis & Butthead presenting award for best Heavy Metal/Hard Rock video at MTV VMA's 1993, if someone is interesting about it...

  • COOL THE EDGE ROCKS

  • The Edge The Genius The Edge The Genius The Edge JUST FEEEEEEEEEEL NUUUUUUUUUUUUUMB :)

  • LOL.. :D Edge is so funny..

  • that is art

    in motion

  • nice sound!!

  • there are moments when you realize his lack of energy is almost confidence

  • i think in the numb video, uh, The Edge was watching television (which would explain the look of utter fascination and projected light flashing)

  • Yup, he was. The camera was the TV and YOU were what he saw there.

  • i've uploaded this same video and you tube made it disappear for the copyright stuff, aniway, thanks for upload this again...im counting your ours muajajaja (five stars xD)

  • LOL I wouldn't have been able to keep a striaght face.

  • awesome. im so in your debt.
