Alison had big shoes to fill given that BJ opened the show in the West End. It was always her intention to sing the song her way, and not impersonate BJ, or attempt to sing like a "black woman". She just sings like she sings.

No, it's not especially soulful, but this singer has the gifts of a pretty decent opera singer. She must be classically trained, which would explain her amazing breath control, vocal clarity and sheer tonal beauty. clarity are phenomenal.
