  • May I say that if you held your flute parralle to your mouth you would get a much stronger, warmer tone? You did very well nicley done

  • Hi,

I've also been learning irish flute for several months, and I wish I could play this way... I like your sound, and the things you let the music say.

You've become one of my web teachers, many thanks for your help.

  • woowww

  • is there any web page wer they sell one of this flutes?

  • where i can get one of those flutes?

  • Can i ask where you bought this flute? Was it online?

  • Why is there a cat in the fiddle case? And aren't you aftraid it might get into your flute case while your playing the tune?

  • Thumb up for the play.

I`m planning to buy one myself and start taking lessons, so wish me luck ;-)

  • Its awesome man. I love a fine fluet and a good mind. Love it. Bless!

  • he is handsome! and nice music n.n

  • nice sound bud.

  • What a beautiful sound to this flute! Very soothing.

  • Great song!

  • hi, iv been playin the trad flute now for nearly 4 years.

i can play reels and jigs on the whistle but find it impossible to play them on the flute

i think its because my fingers are too small to stretch that far :L

    any tips?

  • that was very nice

  • Great one!!! Love it!

  • hey man. this is really good! 5/5! im looking to buy an irish flute. ive played the keyed concert flute and the quena and the kiowa and lots of whistles. can u reccomend a decent brand or place i can buy one from?how much for a decent one?

  • me crys this is something special i know for sure now yes

  • Wow! Lovely job with that! You're great!

  • That's only after one year? I just order my first flute, you give me hope that I might learn. Please keep posting so I may follow in your foot steps. Did you teach yourself?

  • whats the difference between a tin whistle and an irish flute?

  • Comment removed

  • isn`t there a smaller version of this flute??

  • well theres a tin whistle that has just a mouthpiece. not sideblown. very pretty. high pitched and decently priced

  • @o0beatraxxx0o e flat would be smaller but you would be better stick with the D Concert flute in order to be able to join in with other players.

  • This was great =D

  • How much are these?

  • Brilliant and good breath control too!!!! xxx

  • Sound good to me!

  • um what kind of flute is it that you use? because i have watched a few videos and it seems that most of the professionals that i have seen have the same one as you.

  • Its a modern keyless flute copied from a late 19th C. 8 key English flute made by Boosey & Co. named Pratten's Perfected.

There aren't that many of made by Jon C. of Cochran Flutes but its a good one. Many modern flute makers make keyless flutes and use the Pratten's pattern so that is why this may look similar.

  • wow its really beautiful. is it possible to learn to play the irish flute on your own?perhaps with the help of online tutorials and nothing else?

  • Yes and yes.

However much of Irish music is about playing together and sharing tunes just a most music is I believe.

Listen to as much Irish flute playing as possible learn to play those tunes. I'll answer any questions you have. Look for some local Irish musicians and just introduce yourself and listen.

  • thanks for your answer! Which irish flute would you recommend for a beginner? I'm looking for something a little more affordable since i'm starting out.

  • I'm learning by myself. I use internet and a great book by Grey Larsen (google it). As for the flute, Doug Tipple make cheap flutes out of PVC which have a surprisingly brilliant and powerful tone. I got two of them to start with and I'm not in a hurry to get a wooden one yet.

  • nice tell me where to get the book to that song write back...............PLEASE

  • Wow thanks.

  • I wanna learn how to play this song and instrument so bad. I love Irish music and I can just emagin how cool it be when your camping somthing to just end the day over a fire with that. :)

  • you are very good for only playing that small lenghth of time within a few years i recon you will be able to play allmost any music written for it keep up the good work

  • u r very good 4 only playing a year!!! keep it up!!

  • how much is that flute

  • Jon C. keyless delrin are probably going for around 700 bucks.

You'd have to ask him directly though. He doesn't have a website.

I can get you in touch with him if your are interested.

  • really nice,

your flute is clear and warm of sound to :) very nice craftmanship.

    big aplause:)

  • Is the fingering the same as a concert flute? Minus some of the extras?

  • It's in the key of D, so almost. It'd be like playing C but in the D scale.

  • cool

  • Keep up the good work.

I have a request: "The Girl I Left Behind Me" on that tin whistle you have.

  • How much will a flute like this cost me and where can i order one?

  • who makes that flute

  • Jon C. of Cochran Flutes.

If you are interested he'll make you one just like it.

  • how much do they cost? nice tune btw 5*

  • It sounds beautiful! I've played the concert flute for several years, but it's not the same. Having the entire chromatic scale available makes the whole execution rather clunky, I find.

  • Wow. You're great! I try to play tin and low D whistle, and Irish Flute (plastic Dixon's), but I still don't know how to play it properly. I also have a problem with the second octave. I hope to play like you, some day. Greatings

  • This guy is pretty much my hero :P I love the irish flute and the tin whistle :)

  • Beautiful. As always, I really enjoy your style of playing. Definately some of the best videos on You Tube!

  • Wow.

Very kind of you say that.

    Made me happy today. :-)

  • what would be a good irish flute to get for a beginner? I really don't wanna spend much money lol.

  • Who does. The one you see here is really great flute. Its around 500>600 range I think now. Jon C. of Cochran Flutes made it for me. Other lower cost but good makers are Casey Burns folk flute 375 US good wood starter, Ralph Sweet Cherry 295 and Doug Tipple 3pc PVC D with wedge. The Tipple is the best low budget bang for buck. 70 US they are even less depending on make. You can see one on youtube look in the related videos field on the right.

Hope that helps. Good luck! :-)

  • really nice, gratz!

  • Well done, and thanks for playing one of my tunes.

    gian marco pietrasanta

  • Hey Gian!

Thanx! I do it better now. :-)

Arianna's Tower is another of yours I really like. Great back story to tune's name. :-)

  • nice feel and flow to you flute playing.

  • Oh, it sounds very...*searching for word*...pretty?...Delicate?...um...anyway, you sound really good!

  • hey there aanvil! nice playing! good to see a fellow chiffer doing great!

  • nice phrasing.

  • If you want to see the best Irish flute playing musician of all time look up Desi Wilkinson. He is brilliant. a legend.

  • You're good! Keep it up man.. (:

  • niiiiiiice..........@ @

     _

  • ur amazing! u know you kinda look like gene simmons? AWESOME!

  • That's beautiful. :) I can't wait to hear lots more from you. :3

  • Hey, you're very good for just playing for a couple of years! my biggest problem has been learning new tunes. I'm 98.9% self taught. is there a system you use to pick up new songs? or is it just stubborn practice?

  • Hi I know you were asking aanvil but I figured I would answer anyways! The way I learn tunes is by sitting and taking a couple of measures at a time and playing them until i have them memorized. Then I take a few more, memorize them, then try to play the whole thing. I'll do this until I have the whole tune down. I usually use sheet music to help me learn. As frowned upon as it is, my tutor recommends it and he's an All Ireland champ, so he must have did something right! Either way, good luck!

  • thank you! I'm pretty isolated (as far as Irish music goes) where I live. again I appreciate your advice.

  • Very good. It's hard enough to get a note out of a flute let alone a whole tune as good as this! I think so anyway.

Yes, pick up that sucker and blow!!!!

  • I really like it. But its so short.

I would love to hear more.

    X

  • Hi, just caught your video, good job ! and was struck by the great sound. How long are you playing ? How much does a cochran flute cost? I play ( poorly) an M&E pvc flute.

thanks again, you've inspired me to get practicing, Vince

  • Thanx! These two vids are getting' tired. I need to do more. I haven't played long. 2 years in Nov. I'm self taught. How much they cost varies on materials. Not inexpensive, but huge flute bang for your buck. You'll need to contact Jon C. directly. M&Es are just fine! You are lucky to have it. Good to hear you want to play! Pick up that sucker and do it! Just play it everyday. ;-)
  • whered ya get yur flute at and how much fer?

  • GREAT JOB!! where did you buy the irish flute and get the lessons just curious? :D i play the regular flute and i've never seen a irish flute or heard where you could get them or take lessons

  • wow dude....amazing...just work on the timing/transitions a bit, and youll be awesome....im dying to see what another 6 months does to you...

  • what a wonderful flute!!

  • Great work. I've been only playing flute for one year as well. Would be interested in your feedback. :)

  • hey is the fingering for the irish flute the same as a whistle?

  • exactly the same

  • sweet... then i shall buy a flute at some point in the near future... thanks

  • Nice! =)

  • You're really good, espeically since you've only plyed for a year!!

  • Great work, mate!

  • Fantastic work!

  • Wow, nice flute... ;o) Has it been a year? Most of the tone is the player, nice job!

    Jon

  • Thanx Jon, Everyone that I let play it has nothing but good things to say.

I keep finding it can do more things. It gets played everyday! I think it needs a wooden sister. ;)

  • Oh my God I loved it!!!!!!

  • well done!! you're getting a nice sound from that flute!

  • Nice sounding. What flute is that?

  • Thank you. The flute is a Cochran keyless Pratten made for me last year. Its having a birthday soon :-)

Having had the chance now to play many flutes from current well regarded makers this Cochran comes in among the top. I'm very happy with it.

  • Great. Good to know that. I've been anonymously lurking through the Chiff and Fipple forum for some time and know the reputation of Jon Cochran. I play Susato high D and Chieftain low D whistles. My flute is a PVC following Doug Tipple's model. Hope to get a nice flute when moment is suitable. Thanks for your reply. Keep up the good work.

  • Sorry It took so long to respond.

You know... I own a Susato D, a Chieftain Low D and a Tipple 8 hole with the wedge. You have good instruments. The Tipple is actually very playable for a PVC flute. I'd love to hear some of your playing. Please post when your feel ready.

Introduce yourself to the CnF Forum. All will welcome you.

    Cheers!

    Aanvil

  • It sounds nice, well done!!
