Average life expectancy of a pet mouse is between 3-5 years, so Mr Jingles would have lived 64 years or 12 to 20 times the average life expectancy. Based on that, Paul has between 940 and 1400 years to live......
Elaine was played by Actress Eve Brent; she was also known as "Jane" in some of the Tarzan movies. I just read that she died of natural causes. R.I.P. Eve. Rock On!
If you cry at this film, only then you know you're a human and you know that you appreciate life and you are aware of death.... I admit I cried!!!!! and I crying every time....
@92af Sorry, but it doesnt make any sense to compare two different movies.. Godfather is about mafia, life inside of mafia.. The green mile is about misunderstanding, about two people who are so close to each other, but there is no way to help them..
Paul explains that the he's punished for killing John Coffey. That he knew it was a crime against God, for John was God's miracle. Even though John asked him to do it, for John's life was one of torment too. Living so long himself, not remembering even who he is -- how he even got those slavery scars. Sort of King's fictional assessment of how God's gifts carry a burden, and how mankind destroys those gifts to us. Just like Paul did.
great ending. but just maybe empahasising the-"if he could make a mouse live so long, how muhc longer do i have to live" thought wasnt that significant as it doesnt relate to any of us in society. Just maybe it shouldnt have been given the place it had in the dialogue
@melapelas1904 that's the whole point - not that he has lived so long, but that he knows he will outlive anyone he cares about, his wife ,his son, grandchildren perhaps, friends etc. etc and anyone he has ever known
This is what film was invented for ...just perfect writing ....acting...and music. Just incredible. Makes you believe again... that there is always more than we can immediately see.Possiblity
This movie was emotional, heartfelt and in many ways heart warming, until the very end. That ending almost turns it into a horror movie. One line, and one shot of a very old sleeping mouse. A mouse that was alive in the 30s, and who normally would have had a lifespan of 2 maybe 3 years max. Poor Paul. The thought of living, proportionally, that long...terrifying.
Am I the only one to think it was unfair that Paul got punished for John's death? I mean, what could he have done differently? John even wanted to die so he really did him a favour!
Well, in the book Mr Jingles does indeed die after Eliane sees/meets him, so I always assumed the last shot of Mr Jingles in the movie was of him peacefully passing away. He's still breathing when the film fades to black, but he doesn't look so good. Either way, it's such a sad ending.
i am 111 years old Elaine , i was 44 when john coffee walk the green mile , you must not blame john , he couldnt happen what happen its just force of nature , oh i live to see amazing thing another century comes past i have to se my friend loves one die all true the years hall melanda brutus my wife my boy and you Elaine you will die to and my curse i wont be i will see it its my punishment for killing a miracle of god this is what i call Sad story ;( RIP
I did some math, a normal mouse lives about 1 year, and John made the mouse live for about 61 years, a normal man lives about 80 years, so 80 - 44 =36, wich means 36x60 am i right?
all in one i figured out that Paul will live about 2160 years?!? (either i did it wrong or WTF?
@McAppleWar Average lifespan of a mouse is about 4 years. Average lifespan of a man is 78 years, so it would be (34x15)+44, which would make Paul Edgecomb 554 years old when he died in 2443...
@chaosknight27 Yeah, I know, I was just helping McAppleWar with his math...obviously, we don't know how much longer the mouse lived beyond that...even if he was still breathing, he looked in pretty bad shape at the end...
This movie was very sad, and if you read the novel, everyone dies due to their own reasons. Dean (My favorite character) was stabbed to death by a prisoner 4 years after), Harry dies due to cancer, Brutus "Brutal" dies after having a stroke, Percy (the fucker) dies too. Thats why Paul thinks that this is a punishment for letting Coffey die. However he says that we will all walk the Green Mile at some point in which in this case he says "but, oh God, sometimes the Green Mile seems so long"
1999-1935=64 years divide by the average mouse's life span of 2=32 so mister jingles has lived 32 mouse lifetimes 32x78 the average human life span you get 2496
Powerful scene, powerful movie. I wouldn't want to be immortal, either. I could not watch my son die as an old man; just the thought of it is unbearable.
@aiiinsley no hes dead from old age didnt u see the end he even went to the funeral of that lady. when john showed him that wild bill killed and raped the 2 girls he gaved him his gift but that gift was a miracle but a curse too he's like a vampire living without death like mr. jingles. persy was only controled by john so he would shoot wild bill but he never gave him his gift . he died from old age like everyone else .....

:) this movie made me cry so on 3 occasions, when the guy who trained the mouse was going to die he said you kno i wish i got to meet you guys a different way.. which made me so happy inside i dont know why, 2 when mr cofey sed he wanted to go now, and 3 wen he sed he wanted to be in the open, im afraid of the dark. :D this movies so good, and shawshank redemption too.
no lol im talking about Irishfighter1234. He said 'I would have hate to have out lived both my wife and child' as if to say that he has already died haha.
100,000,000 stars out of five i sobbed so much and the basterd who told him to die twice ,WELL I WANNA RIP HIS FACE OFF , SHOVE IT DOWN THE TOILET, CRAP ON IT , STAB IT A COUPLE TIMES AND THEN fLUSH
The acting in this scene was absolutely EXCELLENT.
So moving and touching.
The man who played Tom Hanks as an old man deserved an award for this movie...not the drugged out, tattooed, hedonistic, sex freaks that we call "actors" today.
This and Dolores Claibourne are the two best things King ever wrote. They are relevant, teaching tools and help the sales of Kleenex. I love these films!
Shawshank Redemption usally gets into the top 10 movies of all time, when they do these little countdowns on TV or in the tabloids. So by that you should see the fim must be quite good. Stand by me is also a good book to film crossover, just it's not to my taste, but thats personal choice.
Film adaptations of King's books are usally quite bad, this is one great one that moved from book to film so well. One of my fav books and the film is still good now. Tom Hanks plays his part so well and as for John Coffee...casting supreme :).....I spelt Coffee wrong, "Like the drink, just not spelt the same"
he said he's 108 and have watched everyone of his friends, family and loved ones pass away. i know i havent exactly watched the movie in a long time but whats keeping him from dying now? yeah john transferred his stuff into it him. so he's 108 years old but is he still kicking like a young person or something. his skin grows older over a longer period of time but on the inside he's healthy
@monsterboy31 Yes, but Wild Bill didn't "frame" Coffey, Coffey was trying to revive the girls. Nobody really "framed" him, he was holding the girls, thus making himself look guilty in those racist times. A very sad story, showing how John's death on the green mile was inevitable due to the racism of the people who found him. NOT the cops on the Green Mile.
@monsterboy31 Oh, very true. That was the inevitable part, that he was blamed, because he was black and holding the girls at the scene. I think one of the main points of this movie is a reflection of how fucked up our justice system is, although some cops still have sympathy, you cannot fuck with the system. It sucks. But that's why this movie is so epic.
Only seen this film a few days ago and wow one of the best films I have ever seem great just simply great

Nothing is keeping him alive now that Mr. Jingles is dead. I guesse he probably died shortly after that

You got to read the book's ending to understand the ending a bit better.

is wild bill that cop?
Agomongo1235 1 year ago
Wild Bill was the one who actually raped and killed those girls, then framed John Coffey for it.
monsterboy31 1 year ago
@monsterboy31 Yes, but Wild Bill didn't "frame" Coffey, Coffey was trying to revive the girls. Nobody really "framed" him, he was holding the girls, thus making himself look guilty in those racist times. A very sad story, showing how John's death on the green mile was inevitable due to the racism of the people who found him. NOT the cops on the Green Mile.
EventuallyWeMerge 1 year ago
@EventuallyWeMerge I know he wasn't framed. But he was BLAMED for it.
monsterboy31 1 year ago
@monsterboy31 Oh, very true. That was the inevitable part, that he was blamed, because he was black and holding the girls at the scene. I think one of the main points of this movie is a reflection of how fucked up our justice system is, although some cops still have sympathy, you cannot fuck with the system. It sucks. But that's why this movie is so epic.
