where are the lyrics you mentioned posted? i have found several versions of this heavenly hymn, and i think that there are some here that i have not heard yet. this is one of my very favorites- always brings to my knees.
@musicalidea no it's called Lined Out hymn & until the invention of Sacred Harp/Shape Note was the predominent form of hymnology from the earliest days of Christianity (you can find virtually the same call & response style sung today in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, one of the oldest Christian communities in the world). So the style dates at least to the Dark Ages.
@Forysan It dates back to the 1600's as far as I can find. This is from one of the churches me and my family go to and we still sing like this on alot of the east coast.
@trains336 May God always pour His everlasting LOVE, PEACE, JOY, & BLESSINGS upon you and your loved ones!! Thank you so much for the comments, they are truly appreciated and uplifting! :)
I just love this song. I can remember singing this at church in a little bitty 1 room building, in July, when the heat was sweltering. Beautiful!

Growing up speaking Scottish Gaelic, and going to a Gaelic Church I have to say this is very similar to how hymns are sang in Scottish Gaelic.

This song is number 279 in The Goble Hymnal--O Sing to Me of Heaven-though the Goble dosent really have names for songs just page numbers.

I think J.D. Crowe used part of that song at the end of his version of "The Model Church." That's beautiful.
