Ummm well, at the risk of abuse, I don't have an issue with it's redevelopment, I saw it in 1978 turn into the 4 cinemas and we had them for 40 years. What annoys me is total silence from Bigh, Newman, NLP and others, especially Hinchcliffe who rants on and on about history. They have submitted to the building mafia. They need to be told over and over this was the wrong thing to do.
@brismike65 sorry 30 years, I don't think Brisbane's modern buildings and facades are bad at all like the Myer Centre, but this outrage. Look at what happened to the Village Twin, Oh yeah we will keep the art deco ceilings, oh look termites knock it down and it's just standing there not even an office building. If we have a GFC again will that mean the Regent remains undeveloped?? Shame on you pollies.
it's not just an insult to the people who love going there, it's sheer and utter stupidity to think that the alternative will be better. The Regent's remnants will be just that, just another marble staircase to ugly, character-less offices that offer nothing to those climbing it except wonder as to why they tried to mix two totally incompatible styles of architecture, which will probably mean the paltry remains of the Regent will eventually be modernised accordingly and replaced altogether...
we need a real alternative in leadership, labor know they are safe with the current opposition. this is the last building of this type which is usable by the public. Don't let it join the facades like the rest of Brisbanes' history, take a stand, get involved and voice your concern.
The main fact of the matter is that Redevelopment is going to destroy this gem of brisbane heritage, while Restoration save it, and Extension can revive its glory days.
Honestly Bligh, would you prefer an amazing rare Spanish-gothic style land mark which is the jealousy of all other states, or an inefficient skyscraper that will cost more than it ever makes to run and need to be demolished in half the time that the Regent has lived for?! Its just common sense guys!
A bit misleading to put photographs of the long demolished 1929-1978 auditorium in there.
