In my opinion a science fiction movie or book should make the viewer/reader think. I don't care for sci-fi horror films just for the sake of the "good scare" or the "thrill". When I was a little kid I saw "2001--A Space Odyssey" in a theater and was so impressed by it that it became my favorite movie for many years. The FX weren't great, but were good for the time. A next favorite for me was "Bladerunner" (conflict of androids/humans) which seems to compare to your description of District 9.
