You know... All I ask for is something different. This band rocks because it's different. But why did I have to trawl through so much rubbish before finding a band brave enough to be different? Just be urself. It's not hard when u think about it.
Perhaps most mainstream musicians use the elements you described in their music, but I would still argue that you calling this hip hop is an ignorant decontextualization.
you are using hurtful words to describe my beloved deerhoof :P
@shot2shit just because you love deerhoof doesn't mean A., that they necessarily adhere to your specific tastes, B. that they can't adhere to someone elses, and C. that non-mainstream musicians can't find influences anywhere in music. Basically, you're trying to limit a group's choice in expression because of your own narrow views... and that's both selfish AND ignorant, to be honest.
"hip hop" is not hurtful, if your mind isn't closed off. grow up, this isn't a team/political faction.
Most GREAT Musicians appreciate many other genres of music than just hip-hop... btw hip-hop used to be a very innovative and formidable force in the music world years back but now it's so played out by posers who feel that it's safe to admit they like it that it's become what no one would have guessed it would .... Millennium Disco.... for awhile rock was on the same path, especially with that stupid '80's revival shit that seemed to go on forever getting worse each year...
i forgot all about these guys..i started listening to bloc party n MCR around the same time..i got caught up in all those ignorant fans who only listened to what other people listened to...but i found these guys tho..thank god..i love this band..
Fucking Deerhoof is so amazing, can't take any one part of it away and have it be as fucking amazing. Love it or leave it, although I'd have to say anyone who leaves it doesn't appreciate music enough
And the singer adds great texture to the music. Kinda like Kim Deal with the Breeders who are one of the best bands ever. BTW, I dont understand why people who hate on something go to view it in the first place.
modustheoperandi you are 110% right. Satomi Matsuzaki is an amazing singer and bassist.. youre a fool if you think other wise. and shes not hideous @ skullwithwings4 you fucking moron.. you dont deserve to even listen to this music.. run along and go listen to foo fighters or some lame bullshit.. peace.
Dude. The song is so fucking hip hop. LMAO. Right at :54 I'm glad real musicians realize that hip hop isnt shit and utilize it in their music, because some rock fans simply ABHOR rap music just because it's not rock. But most good rock musicians like hip hop too.
@shot2shit please give an explanation, because to me the intro sounds very much like a wu-tang beat, maybe. especially considering the tempo, repetitious dissonant guitar riff and of course, the drum beat.
just so we're clear, Deerhoof is obviously not a hip hop group... that doesn't mean they don't have hip hop influences, because I'm pretty sure some art-rock musicians wouldn't be so close-minded.
@Jalkotsu saying they sound like hip-hop is completely arbitrary. What you're doing is taking the beat completely out of context. Bass is bass bro, beats are beats and they don't belong solely to hip-hop - that's so closed minded. Maybe to you the beat evokes memories of hip-hop, but probably not to Greg, who wrote it I presume.
"deerhoof is obviously not a hiphop group" ... so why would you try to describe them in terms of hip-hop or wu-tang?
@shot2shit because having hip hop influences doesn't mean you're a hip hop group.
and most musicians of any kind today that use heavy bass, dissonant loops, and a prominent drum beat are likely influenced by the past 30-40 years hip hop has been around in pop and music in general... so yeah, I think they might've been, especially considering they're an artistry-valuing group that would probably appreciate an historically experimental (in terms of sound-making choices at least) genre.
I mean...it's not really hip-hop. I mean, it sounds like maybe something that the Red Hot Chili Peppers might do. So I guess maybe in a really roundabout way it's hip-hoppish.
@greengorillaz well I'd personally believe deerhoof to have a hip hop group as an influence (like Twin Sister, and the whole dubstep movement) than the red hot chili peppers, which is, a little specific and far-reaching if you compare their music.
@Jalkotsu I dunno man. To me hip hop isn't really a "thing" as much as a lot of things. Historically, hip hop is sampling and remixing existing music and then rapping over it. So more appropriately that part of the song is so fucking soul/funk/jazz/rock/etc.
@devious222 you sound like the old hypocritical conservative parents of the 50's, calling rock n roll that "voodoo negro music" and such.
if you don't think producing, music engineering, and that whole technical manipulating side of things doesn't matter, maybe you should destroy every album you've ever listened to, because they've all had producers who've contributed greatly to music you listen to, albeit behind the scenes. while it would be pretty cool to listen to all music live...
@Jalkotsu wha? I think you misinterpreted my comment. I'm actually a huge hip hop fan and completely appreciate the craft that goes into making beats. All I was trying to say is how can a song like this be so hip hop when it doesn't involve the things that make hip hop what it is - as you just said, producing, music engineering, etc? As in, if it sounds like something that would be sampled on a hip hop beat, then it really just sounds like what is being sampled. That's all I was getting at.
We don't know what to do with music anymore. Every rock band sounds or looks the same. I rather see the japanese chick over the stubbly preppy guy who parts his hair to the side.

Gosh golly, a doctorate?! Well, fuck, that makes him a goddamn genius. Why should we even bother looking at his actual product? Let's just stare at his degree.
It's fascinating how they do the credits on their music: "All songs written and performed by Deerhoof." Fascinating. Is this the beginnings of an "elitist" movement to promote egalitarianism? I think it sets an admirable example. One can't help but hope that egos in conflict will not implode their artistic unity.
I'm talking about egalitarianism ("Affirming, promoting, or characterized by belief in equal political, economic, social, and civil rights for all people.") within a creative group. Artists are usually driven by ego. Theirs is an interesting example, I think.
Whether you love them or hate them, Deerhoof is just chillin'. They don't thrust their music/style in anyone's face. I don't see where all this animosity sprang from. And if they are so offensive to the ears, credit is still due to the fact that they are vastly different than any previous conception of sound.
Every time I come listen to Deerhoof on YouTube it's so crazy looking at all the negative comments. I mean, each band/artist has people that hate them; that's fine. But how come Deerhoof is the only band that has people just completely bash them, like how ugly Satomi is, or how her voice is too airy, how they sound like complete shit. It's a waste of time coming up with super extravagant ways to insult them. Their fan base is steadfast.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Woah, Deerhoof is NOT the only band getting shit. Satomi isn't pretty, which doesn't help. And she can't sing (which is the point) which gives haters more fuel.
Never said they were the only band getting shit, I said "each band/artist has people that hate them." They just seem to have particularly hateful anti-fans, or whatever they're called. Whether Satomi is pretty or not is your opinion, it's irrelevant to their sound (I don't think she's a movie star either). But last I checked, music was for the ears, not the eyes. Whether she sings well or not is another opinion, to which I say that at least it's unique, which you have to give them credit for.
Whatever. I disagree with you. I do not think deerhoof has particular hateful fans anymore than other unique bands or even bands that are more popular. Who cares if Satomi's look has nothing to do with the sound? This is a music video and people can see her, so if they don't like how she looks they will hate whether or not you think its relelvant (I personally believe image IS relevant to a band) and how she sings CERTAINLY isn't irrelevant.
Vocalist is pretty cool actually, great style. Dont think i will ever love that breakdown though, just wont sit right with me. Rest of their stuff is better imo.
Thats all you've could figure out to say?? "Learn yourself some music"? You're going to have to elaborate on that one sir. If you mean, pound some indie crap into my head until I think I like it, no thanks. If you mean, learn to play (a) musical instrument(s), done and done.
your criticism towards this band is just "indie crap" the music is jazz, and punk at it's roots, this not your ordinary "indie" band. indie, what's that mean anyways now a days--not much. an easy cop out. and you want to talk about elaborating? this isn't some generic, lets be gentle to make-a-buck music. deerhoof is for real, they're not some fad, they've been around for years, and have been praised by respectable artists, Nels Cline for one, now, your not gonna tell me he's crap, are you?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Face the music pal, 'indie' means not good enough to get a label yet, in today's world. Don't hate me because I said it, but try to be honest with yourself (for once). Just because someone says someone else is the shit, doesn't mean they are the shit, dipshit. If this shit's been around for years, then how come they aren't going anywhere? They still get laughed at by real people.
listen you fucking twit, indie doesn't mean a goddamn thing. it's was fucking label used by music critics in the early ninties to describe jangly rock like REM, and then later on Pavement. did you write the book on indie rock, and alright genius, since when has popularity, and record sales ever mattered when it comes to band being good or not? the band not going anywhere, to whose standards? yours? (laughable)
you have such a lack of understanding of music in general, you can't even form argument with out using the word indie. you have no basis for your argument, what have you presented to me where anyone could actually take you seriously? you have about as much musical knowledge as a 10 year old.
not everyone wants to go somewhere just so they can be eaten by crazy fans. indie means creativity and thought. indie means you get to make the music you want to make instead of what the record label tells you to make because thats whats popular. and real people? what the fuck does that mean? by what you say real people are idiots who watch reality tv all day and say things like O M G i love how skinny you are, do you throw up 5 times a day?

My advice to all newcomers....TURN YOUR SOUND OFF THIS WILL HURT YOUR EARS. These people make great videos...too bad I cant say the same for the ahem*music*ahem
I hate it when people mistake half-assedry/incohesion for creativity. You could get the same effect by visiting a construction site...this shit is so disjointed it pains me to think of all the ignorant douchebags thumbing it up to make themselves feel cool.
Sorry folks, but this is indie music snob material at its purest. Its the kind of 'music'(read: noise) snobs have pound repeatedly into their heads over a long period of time before they 'like' it, in order to deceive themselves and brag to their faggot friends that they listen to a band no one's ever heard of. Guess what tards, if you listen to Fergalicious 34 times in a row, youll think its catchy too.....catchy doesnt mean 'good'.
You know... All I ask for is something different. This band rocks because it's different. But why did I have to trawl through so much rubbish before finding a band brave enough to be different? Just be urself. It's not hard when u think about it.

Whatever. I disagree with you. I do not think deerhoof has particular hateful fans anymore than other unique bands or even bands that are more popular. Who cares if Satomi's look has nothing to do with the sound? This is a music video and people can see her, so if they don't like how she looks they will hate whether or not you think its relelvant (I personally believe image IS relevant to a band) and how she sings CERTAINLY isn't irrelevant.
quitejaded 3 years ago
certainly IS relevant*, excuse me.
quitejaded 3 years ago
Looks are for other industries, not music- just my opinion though. There are tons of musicians that aren't lookers, just check out Beethoven.
JukkiJukkiLime 3 years ago
exaclty music is about the feeling the SOUND gives you
for instance
dave grohl awesome player beautiful voice
looks like a horse
anthony beast lyrics and awesome sounds fucked up look
and there are other artist who arent lookers but theyre music is amazing :]

Vocalist is pretty cool actually, great style. Dont think i will ever love that breakdown though, just wont sit right with me. Rest of their stuff is better imo.

Will try to digest this... definitely appreciate the creativity and approach, but my first impression is that they need to find a new vocalist.

deerhoof is prolific, and light years beyond modern rock. learn yourself some music before you make dumb comments.
conceptionblues 3 years ago
Thats all you've could figure out to say?? "Learn yourself some music"? You're going to have to elaborate on that one sir. If you mean, pound some indie crap into my head until I think I like it, no thanks. If you mean, learn to play (a) musical instrument(s), done and done.
gocleaver 3 years ago
your criticism towards this band is just "indie crap" the music is jazz, and punk at it's roots, this not your ordinary "indie" band. indie, what's that mean anyways now a days--not much. an easy cop out. and you want to talk about elaborating? this isn't some generic, lets be gentle to make-a-buck music. deerhoof is for real, they're not some fad, they've been around for years, and have been praised by respectable artists, Nels Cline for one, now, your not gonna tell me he's crap, are you?

Face the music pal, 'indie' means not good enough to get a label yet, in today's world. Don't hate me because I said it, but try to be honest with yourself (for once). Just because someone says someone else is the shit, doesn't mean they are the shit, dipshit. If this shit's been around for years, then how come they aren't going anywhere? They still get laughed at by real people.
gocleaver 3 years ago
listen you fucking twit, indie doesn't mean a goddamn thing. it's was fucking label used by music critics in the early ninties to describe jangly rock like REM, and then later on Pavement. did you write the book on indie rock, and alright genius, since when has popularity, and record sales ever mattered when it comes to band being good or not? the band not going anywhere, to whose standards? yours? (laughable)
conceptionblues 3 years ago 2
you have such a lack of understanding of music in general, you can't even form argument with out using the word indie. you have no basis for your argument, what have you presented to me where anyone could actually take you seriously? you have about as much musical knowledge as a 10 year old.
conceptionblues 3 years ago
not everyone wants to go somewhere just so they can be eaten by crazy fans. indie means creativity and thought. indie means you get to make the music you want to make instead of what the record label tells you to make because thats whats popular. and real people? what the fuck does that mean? by what you say real people are idiots who watch reality tv all day and say things like O M G i love how skinny you are, do you throw up 5 times a day?

Damn thats funny!

My advice to all newcomers....TURN YOUR SOUND OFF THIS WILL HURT YOUR EARS. These people make great videos...too bad I cant say the same for the ahem*music*ahem
gocleaver 3 years ago
Congrats, you have taken envy to a whole new level.
Now go away and listen to MCR, Linkin Park or whatever kind of mainstream "real music" you like to listen.

WTF is this shit. No one will remember this band in a few months, because the noise they produce is inane filth.
