PERHAPS THE BEST BOOK I'VE EVER READ AND WOULD URGE MALCOM TO KEEP WRITING FOR US. HE SHOULD HAVE HIS OWN CHANNEL HERE TOO. THE WAY HE WRITES, AND HIS RESEARCH AND CORRELATIONS. THAT ALL makes me speechless.
Sounds like a smart guy but why doesn't anyone notice that he hasn't produced anything beyond common sense. 'you need to work hard and have some luck to succeed'. 'kids with more advantage slip less over the summer months'. 'the plane crashed because if the copilot said anything the pilot would tell him to shut up'. I mean come on, sprinkle it with some big words and call it a theory. I think he's a smart guy but its just garnished reality.
He does state that one must be bright, have vision and work hard in order to achieve success. It is called the 10,000 hour rule. The book explains in a much clearer way. The time constraint of interviews such as these require brevity, and as a result there are omissions and simplifications, which in turn trivializes the complexity of Malcolm Gladwell's insights.
Things are so easily taken out of their intended context with interviews regardless of media source. As with anything one requires an integral and comprehensive view (understanding)of a given subject before premature assertions and misinterpetations occur.
The last statements in this interview are ridiculous. While most people that are successful have a lot of help along the way and may have had advantages others didn't, there is always a point in their careers where they have to stand alone and make a critical decision that will effect their career for the good or bad in the long term. In the end, that's what makes you a self made person.
You are talking in circles. Because these individuals would not reach that "point in their careers" without help along the way. Think about what "infrastructure" must be (and has been) provided to those who do "succeed". Malcolm quoted Jeb Bush who referred to himself as "a self made man". Really? The grandson of a Senator, son of a President and brother of a President.
After the last 8 years, where hard work and perseverance was rewarded by the Bush tax cuts, we now are headed into a clueless era of dependency on the big governmental elites with massive big government programs which punish the reward for hard work and perseverance and redistribute the fruits of labor from the outlying exceptionals to the non-outlying, mediocrities.
Hopeful. and after the last 8 years of the cluessless Bush Administration; without bashing and ideology he makes it plainly understandable for the easily distracted like myself Love the 10,000 hour rule! Gladwell is such an interesting thinker- is able to address "stereotypes" and why they are so; without being disparaging and how to learn from our mistakes, and change regardless of circumstances, genetics and cultural influences. Great intellectual exercise for our minds!

He makes great claims, so I did some quick research:
Great sports people - can be born over many different years
Yes - they have to work hard but they also need some great tutors and coaches
Be a skeptic - dont just take his word for it
He never states the contrary or shows the stats.
A good journalist he maybe , but not a great scientist.

@zaqmlp1234 Malcolm is MISSING HIS OWN POINT! The REAL factor is the 10k HOURS, ITSELF!
You can have all the advantages, but, if YOU DO NOT APPLY THE 10K HOURS...NONE OF IT MATTERS!
Everyone has advantages and disaadvantages....There are rich people who are BORN BLIND OR CRIPPLED...IT IS ALL PERSONAL

I agree seriouslyspeaking,
Things are so easily taken out of their intended context with interviews regardless of media source. As with anything one requires an integral and comprehensive view (understanding)of a given subject before premature assertions and misinterpetations occur.
