  • "Recreation" is a better word than "faking" where Flaherty is concerned. To get traditional clothes for his "actors" (who were also his "co-producers"), he had to trade as much as a year's worth of supplies - which says how highly they were still valued. John Grierson (Scottish filmmaker and broadcaster who founded the National Film Board of Canada) actually coined the word "documentary" to describe Bob's films. In the end, NANOOK is a tribute to the Innuit people he so loved and admired.
