You know, that nearly perfectly sums it up. And also, I have read The Witcher series. Honestly, I thought the storytelling in it was extremely odd. Very, very non-linear. And I could never bring myself to feel any emotion toward Gerault (I believe that's the correct spelling - it's been years). Admiration, esteem, pity; nothing.

But you should definitely read GoT. The characters are brilliant and the writing is so damn good you'll never put 'em down.

@CommanderGene Yes, and no. Yes, in terms of overall quality of the characters. Each character is loveable/hateable and each one is believable. The twists are dramatic, the prose brilliant and overall they are genuinely my favorite books. As for the no part, they aren't meant to be anything like Tolkien. They're full of political intrigue, debauchery, and human fallacy, whereas LOTR was much different.

I did hear someone describe Game of Thrones by saying "Imagine Lord of the Rings, only Sauron won and the whole world is basically going down the crapper." Come to think of it that really reminds me of The Witcher series if you've ever read those, they're full of human flaws and focus much more on gray morality than the type of good vs. evil mentality in Tolkien's works.
