It's based on Saiyuuki or "Journey to the West", a classical Chinese Novel. The character with the big ears is Son Goku (yes, like in Dragonball. DB is also based on Saiyuuki).

In the original Chinese stories, the proper name of the character is Sun Wukong, otherwise known as the Monkey King. I'm not 100% certain, but I believe he was a legendary figure even before Buddhism came to China.

In any event, "Son Goku" is just the Japanese naming for the character. He bears other names in other East Asian nations.
