i was watching trains in Dolton on this day. man, glad i didnt go to Chicago Heights. didnt see anything but skies were black and sirens went off. nice video.
@modelrailwayCORP It's called blowing the horn for a crossing and warning people. See US railroad weren't design like UK's where they are fence off and with very little crossings (which we have lots of). Course US trains have to blow their horns alot because we have a lot of idiots who are to dumb/don't pay attention to see a 200 ton locomotive/train coming at them even with lights/bells/gates at a crossings. Plus we have horn signals engineers have to do by law for reasons. Like crossings.
Just wondering, what would be the proper procedure there? did you have to get permission from the dispatcher or was it more like, screw it! We're backing up!.
Tornado says: I will cross now, so take your time, don't risk it!

Germany still is working on world Control. They never gave up this idea but they failed to do it openly during the war. Uh yeah hi guys I'm Vinny. Um this may sound dumb but I'm from Minnesota. Keep updating your search on tornadoes!! I've volunteered to put myself in harms way (with protective measures taken ofcorse) to run inside of a tornado with pads on. Don't worry it will only be a weak tornado (Minnesota doesn't usually get strong ones!) So keep up to date and find my video. I saw the aftermath of the twister that took out Spencer South Dakota, that hit me hard and close to home. I actually think I took the rest of the season off after seeing that disaster.

I hope the engineer in the Union Pacific switcher was alright. I once read an account of the 1889 Johnstown Pennsylvania flood where a steam locomotive engineer saw the water coming down hill from the broken dam & tooted his locomotive's whistle to get people's attention.
@SuperAvailable123 Those are flashes from power lines or transformers. Those flashes are a common way to identify a (probable) tornado in poor visibility.
Incidentally, just because you don't see the condensation funnel reaching the ground doesn't mean the tornado itself has lifted off the ground. By definition the tornado is the rapidly rotating column of air on the ground, not the cloud. As long as the rotating wind is contacting the ground, it's a tornado.
I realize that he was blowing the horn for the grade crossings, but it use to be - perhaps still is, a general rule for distress to blow the horn/whistle in a line of succession toots to alarm those in ear shot of impending trouble.

Man, if you are truly a railfan you should stop making up statistics that harm the very industry to proclaim to be a fan of.
@Boss302fan Maybe you misunderstood what I was getting at. When I say "Fail to blow the horn" I mean in terms of silent zones or the fact that engineers may be talking to dispatch when approaching a crossing which may cause them not to blow soon enough. You should use your manners. Most rr crossing fatalities are due to careless individuals and drivers. Chill out. In silent zones, engineers are not required to bloq the horn and are actually instructed not to blow at silent zones.
@nsrailfann4life91 Your words were "Thousands of people die at rail crossings every year because engineers fail to blow the horn". Now how did I misunderstood that?

Statistically. That is a nationally based statistic. There have been 7 Train Vs Car collisions in my neighborhood ever since the silent zones have been placed. Around here, those statistics dont apply to one place. I plan on working for the railroad. It was a simple misuage of words on my part so chill
@nsrailfann4life91 from your words no once can tell you are doing anything other than attacking the industryl. Thousands die? And yes, nationally and world wide based no blow crossings have fewer accidents.
If you plan on a rail career start off by learning the facts and then try to speak positively about it rather than spouting off without the facts. We need young people entering the industry. If you are serious about it, study it and come in with a positive outlook. Good luck.
@Boss302fan I understand what you are saying and apologize for jumping the gun, but it happens sometimes. We all word things wrong sometimes. Thank you.
SO... ALL OF YOU WHO BITCH ABOUT THE TRAIN BLOWING HIS HORN A LOT IN THE VIDEO..... IM GUESSING YOU WOULDNT WANT SOMETHING TO ALERT YOU OF A BIG FUCKIN TORNADO ABOUT TO COME KILL YOUR STUPID ASS? hmm...oh well..one less dumbass in the world then. as far as other times... kinda smart to blow at crossings when so many people ignore everything that tells them not to cross the track anyways.. and end up getting hit by a train. then the ones that live are dumb enough to say they didnt see it
@THXMARS Its the god damn law you dumbass. They'd rather be safe instead of killing someone and having to live with that for the rest of their lives. They're not going to stop just cause you want your beauty sleep.
@PRRK4Lover Its the law for where on the track? i would like to know this. Since Im unfamiliar with the law regarding where trains are required to blast their horns could you please inform us or point us to a location where I can find this info? Thanks!
@doubleg137 The engineers are alowed to blast the horn anywhere they want unless ordered otherwise. Some towns have passed acts that require the trains to not blast horns, but if someone is hit, it is not the RR or the engineers fault. In this video the engineer blasted at the road crossing right after he began to move away from the tornado and at the road crossing right after the small yard/storage tracks. Also blasting it because he was moving to get away from the tornado, the horn alerted...
@PRRK4Lover When the engineer is "alowed" to blast their horn is strictly covered by the operating rules of the railroad they work for. They are not "alowed" to blast anywhere they want.
@doubleg137 ... any other activity on the rails ahead because he was moving due to the fact that the tornado was heading their way (I dont think any crew is going to wait for yard orders to move from a tornado.
For information on the laws requiring horns, look up "FRA horn regulations" into google and the first hyperlink will provide you with the information.
@CalebGoGrangers Tornadoes aren't always visible all the time. Many are invisible until they touchdown and begin to throw up debris. Many appear, then dissapear repeatedly. Some are "rain wrapped".Hidden in a rainstorm.
Umm, did he get permission for a reverse move?

If you plan on a rail career start off by learning the facts and then try to speak positively about it rather than spouting off without the facts. We need young people entering the industry. If you are serious about it, study it and come in with a positive outlook. Good luck.

Thanks!
doubleg137 7 months ago

Boss302fan 7 months ago
@doubleg137 ... any other activity on the rails ahead because he was moving due to the fact that the tornado was heading their way (I dont think any crew is going to wait for yard orders to move from a tornado.
For information on the laws requiring horns, look up "FRA horn regulations" into google and the first hyperlink will provide you with the information.

CalebGoGrangers 8 months ago
@CalebGoGrangers Tornadoes aren't always visible all the time. Many are invisible until they touchdown and begin to throw up debris. Many appear, then dissapear repeatedly. Some are "rain wrapped".Hidden in a rainstorm.
