Thank you for a very poetic translation. You bring forth strong emotional feelings as we listen and read the words. We are able to feel the sadness, the forlornless and the love and respect the characters feel for each other. In fact, we put ourselves into the scenes for a few minutes and cry and sing along with the prince and his bride. Please accept our thanks and appreciation for taking the time to share. A whole different audience can now enjoy. Thank you.
Thank you, rather, for such encouraging comments. The lyricist was a real poet. In translation, some things are lost. I did try my best to give a direct translation in addition to expressing what the characters were saying in words that would make sense in English.
i m a teochew but i like this opera song very much. Used to listen to my cantonese neighbour's radio which was on practically the whole day long while she sewed for a living.
Thank you for taking the time to comment. You could have been one of my neighbours. Mom would put on the radio while she cooked and washed. Our neighbours would do their laundry, all depending on the Radio for entertainment. That was way back in the 1950's and 60's when I was a toddler in Carrew Street, Seremban when roads and streets still carried British names! Nostalgia!
Thank you so much for sharing this classic and with subtitles too. Now I understand. Makes me feel so nostalgic about those young carefree days when such classics can be heard over the radio. Thank you !
After 48 years, I finally understood the lyrics of this beautiful music that my mom used to sing and teach me. I still miss her very much to this day, even though I am now a mother myself. What a classical music! Thanks for posting this, Jeremy! If you have other old Chinese Opera please translate and post them. I would really enjoy listening to them. I only have record albums which I no longer own a turntable. Everything seems to have gone CD or ITunes. Thanks!
This is a real classic, very very good and I still remember my mother singing this song in the 1960s to 1970s....thank you for posting. I enjoy it so very much!
wow, bring back my memory, first time this movie came out, I was in the high school in HK, all the classmate sing together during the break time, like paulee said, if you don't like this song, you are or were "Hong" Kong people, and I was, even now I am not, still like this song
Thank you very much, canaanoptical, for providing the English subtitle for us - the overseas born Chinese or anybody of non-Chinese ancestry in the world whose has any slight interest in Cantonese opera.
I love this Opera show Princess Sacrifice actually I like movies, dramas of Princess ChangPing- (The Princess and last royal blood of ming dynasty) ... awesome!!!!!!!
Lol just came back from the Hong Kong Heritage Museum. They have an exhibit on Cantonese Opera and Hong Kong's specifically right now. It reminded me of Dai Leu Fah, one of my favourite things to watch when I was a kid (I had the original recorded on a VHS). I remember that when I was a kid, I commented that the guy sounded more like a grandma than a male. Apparently, I could also sing this at the age of 3ish xP Ah, memories.
ive watched the old movies of yamkim fei who was my hero( i never thot of her as a female)and other professional and amateur productions of this show and loved them.but thanks so much to you ,now i can enjoy it again and again, anytime of the day or night in the comfort of my own room and relive all the old times. im especially grateful for the english subtitles. thank you again.

Thank you for posting this video . I watch this often and enjoy it very much. I actually ran into Loong Kim Sang today as she now lives in Vancouver, Canada . She is absolutely wonderful in person, so graceful. I expressed my appreciation to her for her in the contribution in the Chinese opera and what a fantastic artist she is. After meeting her today, I enjoy this video even more now. Thanks again.
Welcome! I'm glad you like it. I've heard about her but I've never met any Opera divas before. It must be a great experience to meet her in real life.
@bubblemuffy how nice you ran into loong kim sang, i am malaysian and will be migrating to australia but now considering vancouver becoz of my idol.i am muslim and hardly read chinese but i love cantonese opera and picking up some chinese character. siti aisyah
Thank you for putting this up. I am Chinese and I never understood the Chinese opera.... with the English translation, I can apprieate it a bit better. (sorry for the spelling and grammer mistakes)
Thank you for this reminder. We should be praying for everyone we care about and sharing with those within our reach. For those faraway stars, we should pray that our Father prepare their hearts by the power of the Holy Spirit so that when someone near to them shares the gospel with them, they would be ready and God's word would grow in them.
my late granny loves this song so much tat we took to see the movie and tat i was only 7 or 8 yrs old. Everytime i clicked on this song, my tears comes because it reminds me of my late granny who passed away peacefully last sept ...before i could go home to visit her to show her what I have found on YOUTUBE...
I'd say... this is probably *the* ultimate Cantonese classic. I'm 21 years old now and this song never fails to bring out the feeling of nostalgia in me.
thanks a lot for posting this classic opera. It must be viewed by the children of this generation and for them to appreciate the rich chinese culture.
heard this classic since my childhood in malaysia. loved it...... your english subtitles made me understand the lyrics fully for the first time in 30 years....thank you :)
yeah ! yeah! for the chinese who dont read chinese! it was great help to understand what was sung. our command in cantonese is not as good as hong kong ppl or contonese.hahaha!
I'm sorry. Personally, I do not. I have heard a similar name but I'm not sure if it's the same artiste... Loh Kim Long. Could that be the one? Perhaps you could try searching online for 羅剑郎
Thank you so much for not only uploading the 'movie-clip'; but also for taking the time to translate the entire song! I used to cry watching this final segment of the 'movie'.. but today I sob because I fully understood the words.
I know about the tragedy of the Princess and her Groom from stories told to me by my elders, but I've always wanted to know, word for word what they are actually saying!! I wonder if they are still meeting once a year on the Milky Way..
Another song that has kept me facinated over the years is the segmen where Fu Ma Ye went to meet the Princess at the old temple, and where she got SO angry at him because she thought that he was a traitor!
Do you have that too, Jeremy san? If you have time, maybe you could upload that too? I've sieved through several channels but could not find the one that features Loong Kim Sang and Mui Suit See.
Sorry for being so 'cheong-hei' :) Oh btw, thank you so much for the friend invite, I appreciate it! I am so happy to have run into your channel today. Being here reminds me that Seremban has THE BEST siew pau in the world!! Woohoo!! And the best satay too :P
You too! You can contact me using my e-mail address too which is on my Channel intro. I do have the whole movie. At the temple, she did not want to admit she was the princess, wanting the world to think the Princess had died. Later, she agreed to meet up with him again. When he turned up, dressed as a prince, she thought he was a traitor. I can tranlate that too but not immediately. God bless you!
Thanks, 'cik Jeremy, I'll keep that in mind for future references! And I look forward to the day when you post that segment.. I'll be right here before you even know it lol.
BTW, yes, I've 'been' to Seremban. We always pass through 'Fu Yoong' on our way to Penang and would stop there for a lunch of Satay, and then 'ta-pau' a lot of siew-paus to take with us as gifts! They are SO good yah.. especially if they are fresh out of the oven and HOT! Ohhh I am so hungry now! :))
Anyway, I'm a student of world history- I want to know, I want to learn. Where in the Net can I find Engl. reads about the fine details of Chinese History? Not even the Chinese History Forum gives those little details you just did.
The little facts, and details, such, only known to the people of a country. Like facts of history known only to my countrypeople, outsiders are only given an overview.
Thank you so much for your kind comments and subscription. I visited your channel and feel really honoured that you have favourited an opera I sang with my sister! Wow! Thanks! :)
I`m watching this to compare the voices from you and your sister and I find that you both should be proud of yourself. You both are just as good or even better.

Welcome. Sorry for this late reply. Sometimes, life is too much for me to handle and I neglect certain things.
It's alright. We all make mistakes. We are here to learn.
Thank you again for your encouragement.

Yam Kim Fei did look like a man in film. I was surprised to see that she lokked so different, in real life.

You've met her before, in real life? She passed away some years ago.

I'd say... this is probably *the* ultimate Cantonese classic. I'm 21 years old now and this song never fails to bring out the feeling of nostalgia in me.

omegaphoenix6 3 years ago
I'm sorry. Personally, I do not. I have heard a similar name but I'm not sure if it's the same artiste... Loh Kim Long. Could that be the one? Perhaps you could try searching online for 羅剑郎

Wow without your translation I would not be able to understand thank you.

Dear Jeremy san
Thank you so much for not only uploading the 'movie-clip'; but also for taking the time to translate the entire song! I used to cry watching this final segment of the 'movie'.. but today I sob because I fully understood the words.
I know about the tragedy of the Princess and her Groom from stories told to me by my elders, but I've always wanted to know, word for word what they are actually saying!! I wonder if they are still meeting once a year on the Milky Way..
dandelionjp 3 years ago
Another song that has kept me facinated over the years is the segmen where Fu Ma Ye went to meet the Princess at the old temple, and where she got SO angry at him because she thought that he was a traitor!
Do you have that too, Jeremy san? If you have time, maybe you could upload that too? I've sieved through several channels but could not find the one that features Loong Kim Sang and Mui Suit See.
dandelionjp 3 years ago
Sorry for being so 'cheong-hei' :) Oh btw, thank you so much for the friend invite, I appreciate it! I am so happy to have run into your channel today. Being here reminds me that Seremban has THE BEST siew pau in the world!! Woohoo!! And the best satay too :P
Take care and have a good week-end!
Cheers
Michiko

God bless you!
canaanoptical 3 years ago
Thanks, 'cik Jeremy, I'll keep that in mind for future references! And I look forward to the day when you post that segment.. I'll be right here before you even know it lol.
BTW, yes, I've 'been' to Seremban. We always pass through 'Fu Yoong' on our way to Penang and would stop there for a lunch of Satay, and then 'ta-pau' a lot of siew-paus to take with us as gifts! They are SO good yah.. especially if they are fresh out of the oven and HOT! Ohhh I am so hungry now! :))
Have a good week!
