My turtle just had surgery for abscess. He is doing fine and I'm keeping him a container away for water for the next week and going to give antibiotics for the next 14 days. My question is how does the turtle eat out of water? Should I give it a small bowl/cap and fill it with water and put food in? Thanks :)
I feel so bad :( ... My turtle has the same thing except at least 3 times smaller and only on one size but i called veterinarians and where I live ( Québec ) there's not a lot of them that can take care of turtles and the only one of them that can do so, charges over 250$ to operate it.Does it hurt ? a lot? I don't want it to suffer but I dont wanna pay over 25 times what she actually cost me and I'm not gonna try to do it myself and hurt it either :( I don't know what to do. Can someone help?
Wow those are big abscesses!! I've had a lot of experience lancing abscesses on adult box turtles but he's so small I wouldn't know how to do him so he for sure needs a vet for this procedure.Good luck & I hope he pulls through!
Nobody said any life was of greater value than any other until Wbeliever7, it seems to me that someone was looking for an argument, common sense would tell you that if Mike had to choose between a turtle and his own child he would choose his child. If he could choose both he most certainly would. This is a man with love and purpose in his life. I admire Mike's passion for animals and don't doubt his compassion toward human kind, keep up the great work Mike, your awesome! Peace
my lil' turtle had the same problem. she got an operation and completely healed. you can't even see the scar! the vet made a very good job. good luck for your pet!
Mike - any updates yet on the little one? I'm anxious to see how things turn out for him. I for one believe that you should never ever purchase a pet of ANY size, type, or expense unless you are willing to give it the care and attention a life deserves. Thanks for doing what you do, Mike. We all should try and do what we can to make this world better for every living thing, fellow human beings and all of earth's creatures. (I have a soft spot for turtles, too)
wow...i'm feel really bad for you for having that attitude towards a living creature. Just becuase they are cheap to buy doesn't mean they don't deserve a chance at life and are expendable. If I had your attitude in life, I wouldn't be in the business i am in.
@mikethereptileguy he's cute and all but seriously its a TURTLE. Why not spend that money on something that really matters. People are starving to death and you're spending hundreds or dollars to take our your turtles cyst.
@Wbeliever7 you spent hundreds of dollars on getting a computer so you could go on youtube and tell people to put their money to good use. solid argument
@Wbeliever7 What makes a human child any different than turtle baby? They're both living beings that deserve care. Animals just cannot get that care for themselves. Humans are sucking the life out of this planet and not giving anything back. This is Mike giving back.
@Wbeliever7 All life has equal value, even yours. people like my self and mike and others believe that every one has great value from tiny baby turtles to dogs and cats and even you. if we have the ability to save a life and even better it some, we do it. We understand that the fact that humans have become not much more than a parasite to this earth, and we realize that this is not the way for this worn out little ball to survive. One day you may evolve to the plane where you realize. maybe not.
@Wbeliever7 You're missing my point completely, which is why this will be my last comment to you. I am not going to argue over Youtube anymore. Humans ARE animals, there is no difference, we are all living beings and we all deserve to be on this earth. For someone to believe that any living being should be tossed away and is not worth the effort because you can just get a new one, is just plain ignorant.
@Wbeliever7 Im just going to come right out and say what everyone else wants to...um....you are an idiot. Mike takes a chance to better the life of the critter that has been trusted to his care. First off, you have no right to tell people what to do with their pets or their money. Secondly, just because something bad is happening somewhere does not mean you have a responsibility to a certain issue. Why are you on the internet? Do you realize that millions dont have the internet?
@Wbeliever7 perhaps instead of wasting your time here, being an idiot, you could be out in the world making a difference like mike is. What are you doing now? Are you out saving the lives of the starving? No, you are sitting on your ass insulting the career of another while you are ill wager in a career or study choice that does not directly solve the problems of the world. Grow up, and dont comment if you are going to be an idiot. Keep up the good work mike. My sulcata and i are rooting for you
@Wbeliever7 What does it matter to you how much he spent on veterinary care for a turtle? Yes, I agree that he could have just taken the turtle to the vet to be euthanized (so it wouldn't suffer), and purchased another turtle, but it's his choice to help another living creature. Maybe he'd rather spend money on a helpless living being than on a new car or fancy clothes. What are you doing to make the world a better place?
@beautifuljoe1313 why are people still commenting on my really really old comment lol. I just think its a waste. I like to spend money to help people rather than turtles but to each his own.
@Wbeliever7 Have you ever had a person ask you to take thier pet because the person has been told they have a month left to live because the chemo therapy isn't working? Have you ever had a little girl cry her eyes out because she can't understand why mommy and daddy are giving away her turtle they decided they didn't have the time and/or money to upgrade the tank for the baby turtle they purchased for her on a whim while they were on vactaion last year?
@QuantumApparatus on the contrary. I would never have any problem spending money on a loved one. Animals are cute but it's just not the same as a person. A pet and a child are two completely different things...
So, what happened after the surgery??

@Wbeliever7: "I like to spend money to help people rather than turtles"
And there are people who own turtles that might need help taking care of them. Tanks are extremely expensive! So are exotic vets!

@KendarB Nobody in their right mind can actually believe that the life of a turtle is equal to a life of a human child. Thats stupidity.
