  • SO good. Grew up on Peter Gabriel. When this song gets to the "Digging in the dirt" part and the music changes from angry to vulnerable....eeesk. It really gets me. So good

  • This baseline sounds alot like David Bowie's "I'm afraid of americans"

  • As a little girl I was always keen on Peter Gabriel's stuff.. especially the videos.. Something about it totally drew me in.. years later as a bewildered, bona fide fan, my mum tells me that she was listening to the Car album the whole time she was pregnant with me. Apparently what we may listened to in the womb makes some sort of deep impression :) Gabriel's voice and whole 'vibe' literally feels like it's a part of me, scratches a really deep itch. And we're both Leo ascendant! blablabla.

  • It's about pyschotherapy

  • @pthompson2005 Indeed. Hidden feelings and mis-understood reactions in relationships and anger triggers.

Deep enough ? Exorcising through music and Video (Childhood references). Also good music and Vids

  • He's a God.

  • Dont talk back, just drive tha car. Shut your mouth, I know what you are. Dont say nothin, keep ya hands on tha wheel. Dont turn around, this is for real! NOW THAT IS GANGSTA! (Sounds like a carjack to me) DJKEN

  • The funk in this song is the shit...Peter Gabriel is one cool dude

  • Excellent song, but is this about a wife beater?

  • cool music

    cool times

  • sounds like Pink Floyd Echos Funky part.

  • I take this song personally.

  • All these years and I JUST figure out that the chick in this video is Maria from 'Allo 'Allo..lol

  • Profound

  • This video creeped me out when I was younger. The funny thing is now I get it! Peter is far more than a great video artist. He became so successful with his videos many of us forgot to just listen. His music has become a huge influence to me now, especially the songs with no videos.

  • thats how i feel about wasps too.

  • Maria you are wanted in the back room!

  • @garic2k no she really isnt, but she wanted it, i was there. lol

  • i love this song!!!

  • this is emotional art!!!! love it!!!

  • this is art, love it!!!

  • I truly miss the days when Mtv played music videos. Childhood memories.

  • @vanarve yeah you're truly right~~

  • "El Maestro Peter Gabriel en los vocales...."

  • Tony Levin is the man, enough said. Without the bottom end most PG songs would suffer. I love PG's compostition but I wanted to give respect to the bald man in the band.

  • Great forgotten classic!

  • amazing song.

  • He is a true artist and the video dipicts that,, very theatrical

  • oh my god,.... this is really scary huh?

  • Peter Gabriel has the best film clips but never gets any awards.

  • Like Stanley Kubrick who never won a Best Director Oscar...

  • Actually he did win the Grammy award for best music video shortform for this tune and for Steam a year later...not to mention the Secret World Live Concert Video won the Grammy for best music video longform...he has also won several other grammys as well, most recently for his work on the Wall-E soundtrack!

  • @onkjvfmsv He had numerous awards, nine MTV awards, among them one for "Sledge Hammer". A Grammy and several other awards for his music clips.

  • @onkjvfmsv NOT TRUE ! he actually won various awards in the UK for "Big Time" and "Sledgehammer" and "Shock the Monkey" and in the USA for "Shock the Monkey"!!!!!

  • a song which pulls out the worst in you. it tells you that its normal for a lot of folks. but the past always catches up with you in case u r not careful. the dirt is bad.

  • Peter Gabriel have the best 80´s and early 90´s music videos.

  • him and Primus

  • I think its about digging into the past (dirt), getting there and then dealing with it. The video shows the journey and in the end, he is renewed.

  • It's about the therapy he had following his breakup with Rosanna Arquette and how it felt to "dig" into memories. emotions, etc.

    Peter's words, not mine.

  • For some reason, I heard he wrote this song after interviewing convicts in jail, or something similar, and their nights journey through whatever they were charged (assault/ etc) that's why the video has violence entailed in it.

  • hardly, he did'nt a rats a.. at that point

  • It´s been over decade, but this song kicks ass.. and the video ofcourse :)

  • So raw, but so smooth at the same time. What a great I love this song :)

  • There's no stopping the man I'm a Peter Gabriel fanatic.

  • still so modern and yet oldtimeschool.

    nails me time after time

  • good song and cool music video

  • wow...like achtung baby from U2 (think it was the same year), this song still sounds like brandnew...and a timeless jewel :)

  • No way achtung baby and digging in the dirt are from the same year.

  • Sorry you were right, they are from the same year.

  • and I the year this came out was 1992! wow,16 years ago!

  • The more you, the more you create memories, both good and bad. you're getting closer to death. digging into the dirt. where you'll be buried. the fly and bee swating represents how we big a big thing outta nothing. in the skeem of things. it doesn't matter. we're just digging in the dirt. getting closer to our demise.

  • It's one of his more underrated songs, but I love this song and video. classic!

  • Peter Gabriel is the king of music videos and this one more than proves it.

  • this song is great i heard it was about his Ex

and he's british which is cool one of the great singers this contry has produced

  • *country

  • Great singing something in me dark and sticky kinda says erm

  • he's a fucked up guy.i friggin love it

  • this video rocks! he has a dvd with all of his videos! there is a beautiful one on there for "the drop"

  • Amazing song from one of our best talents. Would love to see him live sometimes...

  • Gabriel always has great videos!

  • my fave part is when the maggots are rewined and his hand comes back together...oh by the way i bought security in 1982 "shock the monekey" when i was 9 years old...im currantly 34 and i own halo 1, but pro cycling manager 2007 is more my fancy! thanks for the video!

  • i mean his stuff was better but tony levin was amazing 2

  • nice song good bass in it but doesnt match flea's basslines

  • I heard this song was to his ex wife

  • IT IS........

  • You can tell there is a little anger in the song...

  • i doubt a bunch of peter gabriel fans play halo. Choose better places for your advertisment.

  • I play halo..... I hate spammers

  • Good song, too bad they had to use it to advertise that tv show "Dirt".

  • i love that show. it's how i heard of this song. lol

  • Fine video & song!!!!

  • peter gabriels music is happy music.thought provoking and danceable.unusual combination

  • I agree - have you viewed more recent movie s/trck & concert versions? Thx for pointing to African influences. Like Paul Simon's Graceland? Finally are you a fan of Virginia Woolf's Mrs Dalloway...

  • I have always thought Peter Gabriel is terrific. His songs have real depth, usually, and VERY good groove. (Toni Levin, his bassist, is a monster!)

  • great song. good to see him on tour again...maybe he and Genesis will cross paths on their Euro tours or for Live Earth. Tony Levin is indeed a monster on bass...much like John McVie, Geddy Lee, the late John Entwistle and John Paul Jones.

  • i like it, but exactly is it symbolizing or sayign?

  • I was just thinking and wondering the same thing. Most of peter's videos are just a hodgepodge of cool looking stuff, this one on the other hand seems to be deeply symbolic.. im just missing the symbolism.

  • Entire thing is him talking to a shrink. Read the lyrics.

  • Entire thing is him talking to a shrink. Read the lyrics.

  • Absolutly, i believe its him talking to his shrink. sounds alot like a shrink named Javov's Primal scream therapy. Ive heard rumor that peter gabriels album "security" is dedicated to physcho therapy; songs like shock the monkey and all.

  • The man Gabriel is playing in the car is the same person as the little boy. Ordinary things, like a swarm of bees, remind the man of how he was mistreated as a child. The "dirt" is his past and he's "digging" through it so he can face the painful parts and start a new life as a strong, whole person.

  • Hells yeah...I miss this song..I liked it on that show Dirt too...I wish they'd hurry up with the next season!!!!:-)

  • Beyond words.

    Peter's said it all!

    d21lewis: with you 101%

POWERFUL - the video is so metaphoric/literal too! It is a masterpiece!!

  • Truly a musical giant. It's funny that his departure from Genesis is one of the best moments in musical history. Not only did he go on to one of the greatest solo careers in history, he opened the door for Phil Collins to be Genesis's frontman, and we know how that runed out ;)

  • Thanks for posting!

  • This video NEEDS to be seen. Very powerful.

  • my favorite peter song.

  • Awsome video- thank you
