SO good. Grew up on Peter Gabriel. When this song gets to the "Digging in the dirt" part and the music changes from angry to vulnerable....eeesk. It really gets me. So good
As a little girl I was always keen on Peter Gabriel's stuff.. especially the videos.. Something about it totally drew me in.. years later as a bewildered, bona fide fan, my mum tells me that she was listening to the Car album the whole time she was pregnant with me. Apparently what we may listened to in the womb makes some sort of deep impression :) Gabriel's voice and whole 'vibe' literally feels like it's a part of me, scratches a really deep itch. And we're both Leo ascendant! blablabla.
Dont talk back, just drive tha car. Shut your mouth, I know what you are. Dont say nothin, keep ya hands on tha wheel. Dont turn around, this is for real! NOW THAT IS GANGSTA! (Sounds like a carjack to me) DJKEN
Dont talk back, just drive tha car. Shut your mouth, I know what you are. Dont say nothin, keep ya hands on tha wheel. Dont turn around, this is for real! NOW THAT IS GANGSTA! (Sounds like a carjack to me)
This video creeped me out when I was younger. The funny thing is now I get it! Peter is far more than a great video artist. He became so successful with his videos many of us forgot to just listen. His music has become a huge influence to me now, especially the songs with no videos.
Tony Levin is the man, enough said. Without the bottom end most PG songs would suffer. I love PG's compostition but I wanted to give respect to the bald man in the band.
Actually he did win the Grammy award for best music video shortform for this tune and for Steam a year later...not to mention the Secret World Live Concert Video won the Grammy for best music video longform...he has also won several other grammys as well, most recently for his work on the Wall-E soundtrack!
@onkjvfmsv NOT TRUE ! he actually won various awards in the UK for "Big Time" and "Sledgehammer" and "Shock the Monkey" and in the USA for "Shock the Monkey"!!!!!
a song which pulls out the worst in you. it tells you that its normal for a lot of folks. but the past always catches up with you in case u r not careful. the dirt is bad.
For some reason, I heard he wrote this song after interviewing convicts in jail, or something similar, and their nights journey through whatever they were charged (assault/ etc) that's why the video has violence entailed in it.
The more you, the more you create memories, both good and bad. you're getting closer to death. digging into the dirt. where you'll be buried. the fly and bee swating represents how we big a big thing outta nothing. in the skeem of things. it doesn't matter. we're just digging in the dirt. getting closer to our demise.
my fave part is when the maggots are rewined and his hand comes back together...oh by the way i bought security in 1982 "shock the monekey" when i was 9 years old...im currantly 34 and i own halo 1, but pro cycling manager 2007 is more my fancy! thanks for the video!
That is an awesome video for that game! Anyone here Halo Fans? I bet most of you are. I'm getting my copy of Halo 3 for free at halo3.wantsDOTit(replace DOT with .) I also get a free xbox 360 elite system.

great song. good to see him on tour again...maybe he and Genesis will cross paths on their Euro tours or for Live Earth. Tony Levin is indeed a monster on bass...much like John McVie, Geddy Lee, the late John Entwistle and John Paul Jones.
I was just thinking and wondering the same thing. Most of peter's videos are just a hodgepodge of cool looking stuff, this one on the other hand seems to be deeply symbolic.. im just missing the symbolism.
Absolutly, i believe its him talking to his shrink. sounds alot like a shrink named Javov's Primal scream therapy. Ive heard rumor that peter gabriels album "security" is dedicated to physcho therapy; songs like shock the monkey and all.
The man Gabriel is playing in the car is the same person as the little boy. Ordinary things, like a swarm of bees, remind the man of how he was mistreated as a child. The "dirt" is his past and he's "digging" through it so he can face the painful parts and start a new life as a strong, whole person.
Truly a musical giant. It's funny that his departure from Genesis is one of the best moments in musical history. Not only did he go on to one of the greatest solo careers in history, he opened the door for Phil Collins to be Genesis's frontman, and we know how that runed out ;)

I think its about digging into the past (dirt), getting there and then dealing with it. The video shows the journey and in the end, he is renewed.

It's about the therapy he had following his breakup with Rosanna Arquette and how it felt to "dig" into memories. emotions, etc.
