  • ive got a night blooming cereus it had bloomed only once. (spectacular) its been 4 months now bt its not blooming now :( y?? also a new shoot had grown and there are many leaves. it is in very good condition

  • I live in So California (hot and dry) and had this plant for 8 years. It took 5 yrs to start budding. I barely ever water it, it is under a tree and last summer I fed her bone meal. This is the 3rd time this summer that is flowering and I have 14 buds! I cant wait for them to open. I will call friends to share the moment. It takes just two hrs to open completely, between 9 and 11pm, aprox. All I do for her is look for buds and whisper niceties.

  • Wow one has just bloomed in my garden. Such a beautiful sight.

  • I hate the vines because they are invasive. But then when the flowers bloom I remember why I do not cut them down. I think they are beautiful. As far as caring for it. I do not have a clue! I live in Central Florida so maybe that is why I can totally neglect it and still have it do well.

  • Thanks for the great vid. I put mine out in the spring and bring it in for winter. This was the second year it bloomed. If I'd been able to leave it out longer, I had another bloom coming up but it was a choice of getting a flower or losing the plant.

  • This is sooooo gourgeous, I dont know where to get one though :(

  • poppavox. Your right, its all about how you interpret time. time isnt constricted by the laws that have been applied. Just because something cant be proven doesnt mean it isnt so. I will see my cereus bloom before i go. the universe will move out of the way.

  • just saw this happen live last night. Slept under the stars and watched it and it was cool to relive it. Thank you for posting!

  • We've had a cereus for several years that was given to us by a neighbor when she moved. We received no instructions about care and feeding. It was said to be so spectacular that they had parties with bands to celebrate its blooms. Any suggestions?

  • @jthedane Thanks for the nice words... as far as care suggestions, it is a plant that thrives in tropical conditions. Mine get a lot of water, bright filtered sunlight at least 3/4 of the day and an occasional feeding of worm dirt ';-)... they bloom continuously while the weather is warm. here in New Orleans all but Dec-March (usually)

As far as suggesting a band; I would like to have Buddy Guy or maybe Jeff Beck over for a cereus blues jam...

  • @jthedane Hi, I have a Cereus (Flower/Star of Bethlehem) it's quite young (8 months, 5ft) in a pot & it already has 27 flower buds coming out. I live in tropical Australia but I have never watered it. It is actually a cactus/vine & is hardy. The only way it will die is with poison. Don't be too fussy with it. NOT 100% hot sun. Over-watering can give it wet feet. Just treat it like a cactus. Cactus fertilizer to bring bloom. My mother has one growing up a huge palm tree 30ft tall, it's awesome.

  • We've had a cereus for several years now. A neighbor gave it to us when she moved. We live in eastern Iowa, so it only goes outside when it's warm. We've never had it bloom. We need suggestions on how to care for it. The former owners also had parties, including bands, when it was about to bloom. We would love to continue that summer tradition here. Suggestions?

  • My neighbor and friend here in Maben, Mississippi, down the highway from me has 1 cereus plant and on the day of the night it blooms she calls all the close neighbors and friends and we have a party, she makes banana pudding or pie or cake and we have coffee and view the blooms. After a few flashes of light from cameras it starts closing and we all go back in and let it open again. This one is over 40 years old too

  • it's the lunar flower! (Wolf's rain)

  • I looooove my Cereus. The first bloom we got on it filled the ENTIRE house with the most beautiful fragrance. I'm trying to learn how to prune it properly now, though... since... lets be honest... the plant's a bit of an ugly duckling.

  • Thanks ALL for a polite and informative repartee... ;-)

Last summer I had the most prolific bloom ever... one night there were over ten blossoms opened and you could smell them from my front door... over 50 yards from where they are in the back... almost overpowering.

This Winter was colder than normal, and a freeze took away a couple plants and some exposed leaves... but as spring springs forth,,, so are they.

    and the circle continues...

  • how long did this take? like just the opening part?

  • Just the opening takes 2 hrs, from 9 to 11 pm. At least mine are quite punctual! By sun rise they are closed. The first two that opened lasted until 9am, I don't know why, and that's how I found out that they flowered!

  • that is beautiful

  • O my I didn't know that this is the night blooming cereus! Had some for years before the first bloom appeared. We were so dissapointed since we only saw it closed; we thought the blooms are really like that.

Then one evening, my mom went out to the garden & she found a half opened bloom. Unfortunately, we never saw it in full glory. since we thought it never opens up fully.

Its been months since it blomed. I'm going to wait to see it in full glory :)

  • How do you know when it's about to bloom. I have one that has never bloomed yet (it's up to about 3 feet long, from 6" cuttings), but a weird stalk it starting to appear. I don't want to miss it. Thanks.

  • The Buds will appear on leaf edges, the actual bloom is usually within a week or so. the buds on my variety will reach about 4" in length and it's usually within 24 hours from there.

Keep watching... The small cutting I was given a few years ago is now 4 or 5 large potted plants... it's considered invasive in some places...

    ThX

  • First the stalk, then the leaves on the stalk, then more stalks and more leaves and one beautiful evening your first gorgeous flower. After that, every year more flowers and more often. Maybe even 3-4 times a year. Enjoy

  • you will notice that one day the bloom is whiter, it is really full and the outer petals, although still closed, are beginning to turn white. That night it will open. You can also check every night at 9pm if it starts to open it takes just two hrs, from 9 t0 11pm

  • Very super cool, mine went off last night under a full Florida moon AWESOME!!!

  • It's sad, that something so beautiful graces this Earth for such a short time...

  • depends on your idea of time...

  • On the contrary, such beauty and such fragrance could not be tolerated for much more than that. Nature known how much to please you. Enjoy it.

  • fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great! to do and something excellent

and beautiful does take effort ... at the

very least. Thanks for the post.

  • This makes me wonder why the flowers go through all the effort every day. It seems such an effort.

    Very pretty and well photographed.
