Dude my aunt was telling me about this a few years ago. She used to live there and was forced to move. They were afraid the ground was going to gave in or a explosion was going to occur. I think she went to see her old house about 5 years ago and she said you could barely even see it. They didnt even get to get all of their stuff out.
It happened in the 60's, a few townspeople were burning excess garbage in their "dump" (small, but still) and there was a vein of coal near the surface that caught fire....and that was how it started. People have tried several times over the past 40+ years to put the fire out..lots of different methods..but to no avail. 400+ acres are burning right now.
@IrishBarFight by local townspeople you mean the town's fire dept right because that's what i read about and the actual start of the fire was actually in a dump but in the back of the cemetery near memorial day weekend
yeh this town is what the creator of the silent hill movie based it on. he thought it was a great way to kinda bring fiction into reality.
