I'm a true fanatic of Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons, and I prefer this that any version ... I love this song, this band & this "sophisticated" musician.
We just lost John Walker, and his rendition of this song made it a favorite for me. I had never heard Frankie Valli's original and couldn't imagine it since most of Valli's work was in falsetto. When I heard Valli carry the full tune in his lower register, I was impressed.
One thing I noticed over the years, back in 60's most of the groups (like 4 seasons, Walker Bros, Temptations, etc) all had talented voices in addition to beautiful music. Then the words were also more meaningful- most of them. Thank you bluesouldsound for posting this!!
Wow these dudes sure had some talent. The stuff they gave away that became hits....this song, "Silence Is Golden", "Bye Bye Baby" .... let alone all their own big hits.
An absolutely fantastic song and Frankie Valli does a fine job but The Walker Brothers blow everyone else all of the water. I'm not even a Scott Walker fan but that voice on his version of this song gives me the chills.
Bob Crewe knew that his own version did not have what it took to be a hit. He took it over to England and gave it to the Walker Brother's producer. The first version sounded just like Valli's so John Walker insisted they rerecord it because he knew it had hit potential.
Valli was a really good singer. He certainly put a different spin on this song. First time I am hearing it. For the people saying not to compare it with other renditions-sorry, that is what most people do when they have heard other versions of the same song. I think he did the song proud.
Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons is overall my favorite band. They had such good songs. This song right here was written by Bob Gaudio and Bob Crewe the writers of all their other hits. What basically Bob Gaudio said in a Biography special he was not sure if this song was going to do well because it was a time when he just wrote the songs like he did here. I know the Walker Brothers made it a smash but however both versions of the song are great.
Everything is timing .... but the fact that this was not a hit does not take away from it being a great rendition ... Frankie does a great job here and the song itself is an absolute classic ... This song belongs in the Great American Pop Song book !
It's a shame when some folks can't listen to something assoc'ed with something or someone else w/o comparing it. This is where Frankie poured out his soul as nowhere else---in a normal male range, too. There are 100 other renditions out there... uh oh, "Valli was the original artist to record the Gaudio-Crewe composition "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine (Anymore)", a performance that was copied nearly note for note when recorded by The Walker Brothers, an American group based in England." --Wikipedia!
It's a shame when people can't listen to something strongly associated with something or someone else without comparing it. This is where Frankie poured out his soul as nowhere else I can think of. Sang in a normal male range, too. There are 100 other renditions of it out there -- how far do you all want to go?
It's a shame when people can't listen to something strongly associated with something or someone else without comparing it. This is where Frankie poured out his soul as nowhere else I can think of. Love the Four Seasons and this is ok, but gotta give The Walker Bros props for their version cause it was so sooooooooulful! I always thought it was as good as any Righteous Brothers hit . Valli's cover of "I've Got You Under My Skin", I think is better than Sinatra's. And no one can do "I Can't Take My Eye Off Of You," as good as Frankie Vallie.
The kinks Village Green Preservation Society album from l968 right up there with Pet Sounds....Love this song by the 4 seasons......you can feel the pain and loneiness
Responding to an earlier comment, did the Beach Boys actually record and release a version of "Walk Like A Man"? Or was it just alluded to on "Surfers Rule"? Or was it done at a concert with Adrian Baker singing lead? Adrian Baker toured and sang with both The Four Seasons and The Beach Boys at various times.
Often, original versions of songs are not the hit version. They are often covered by other artists if a single wasn't released or wasn't a hit.
Amazing song. Pop music just doesn't get any better than this. Bob Gaudio said of all of his songs this is his favorite. He also said he wanted to be a drummer and that's why the drums always played such an integral part in so many Four Seasons songs. The Bob Gaudio - Bob Crewe arrangements were always outstanding. I could listen to this all day. I may just do that...
This is such a great song, it doesn't seem to matter who sings it. I've also heard Keane's version. The Walker Bros I would say is probably the best version of this song. But I find I like the slower tempo of the 4 season's version also. It's a strong, beautiful & enduring classic. I don't know anyone who doesn't like this song. How can you not like it?
Covered this ...copied that ... After all these years, just enjoy the stories of new loves and loves lost....we are all too old to do more than that !
what a brilliant song. everything about it, simple lyrics, clever song structure, the repetitious and infectious chorus; all it needs is the right vocalist, and so far, Frankie is the best.
At 3:35, it ran a little long for Top 40 radio, though this sounds a little slowed down from what I remember. The promotion could have been more effective. In '62, word of mouth and DJ promotion was more effective. It went out with the post '64 hype.
Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons covered a lot of stuff and made it their own, but this is an original. Another is the first charting track of "Can't Get Enough Of You Baby. Yes, before Smash Mouth, ? and The Mysterians, and even The Toys.
johnkatz502, This is what I rmember about the album. It must have come in the very lat 50s or early 60s. One of the songs on it was "Come Si Bella" It also featured the Ink Spots on that album and another band. Not the one you mentioned. Thanks
Not his best but Frankie did his thing on this. The orchestral arrangement on the Walker Bros. version might be more powerful, but Frankie was a better singer than the Bros.
The Walker Brothers version was produced by Johnny Franz in a style that Phil Spector had made popular. Franz was know for his work with Dusty Springfield. He died in 1977 at 54.
Although The Walker Bros. version is more upbeat, you need to remember that Frankie was trying to break out as a solo artist. In order to try to appeal to both the 1960's teen crowd and grown-ups, this version does sound like a cross between the Righteous Brothers and Frank Sinatra. If you ever come across the "Timeless" album, which was Frankie's second solo album, you will not hear the distinctive Four Seasons sound in it. Instead, you hear more big band/orchestra music in the background.
@rwboa22 the walker brothers started out like the righteous brothers with 2 guys doing r&b although they both had low voices like the ames brothers the righteous brothers had one low voice and one high voice then they picked up a third guy and went to england [frankie can sing low and high ]
The Walker Bro's did a great job on this as they had a hit with it....but good ole Frankie does a incredible job singing this great song....I love both versions, kinda like this one alittle bit better....sets the mood
Well, I suppose that everyone has the right to do their own version of a song, but with all due respect to my beloved Frankie, this song is best suited to Scott Walker when he was in his prime with The Walker Brothers. I am so sorry to hear how Scott has decided, let's put it this way, 'not to go back to his glory days'. However, John Walker is doing very well these days, touring over here in the UK and is sounding absolutely wonderful.
@jiveghost Walker Brothers does give off a chilling vibe but this version does too. But I do like the Walker Brothers chilling vibe of their version. This one's cool by itself.
The backround singing is too distant from Frankie`s lead. The Walker brothers'version is much more stirring.I`m surprised that they didn`t have a better arrangement for this one, especially since Bobby Gaudio wrote it!Whereas their version of "Sunday kind of Love" is my favorite of all the versions out there.
Frankie Valli is obviously very irritated that The Walker Bros. had a huge hit with the song. Valli hosted a showing of the film "Beach Ball" on AMC about 10 years ago. The film contained numerous recording artists including The Four Seasons and the early version of The Walker Bros., before they went to England and became a sensation. Valli did not mention The Walker Bros. by name at all.
@moorlock2003 In the UK, four songs originally recorded by Frankie Valli/ The Four Seasons were no 1s for other acts: The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore (Walker Brothers, 1966), Silence is Golden (The Tremeloes, 1967), Bye Bye Baby, (Bay City Rollers, 1975), Working My Way Back To You (Detroit Spinners, 1980, OK just the Spinners in the USA!)
@louiefortune Yes. The Night gave the band a new lease of life in the UK. It was very popular on the Northern Soul circuit, and was a top ten hit in 1975. Huge hits followed with Who Loves You, December 63 (their only UK no 1) and Silver Star. I think they also had a hit with the Beatles song We Can Work It Out.
frankie is a rock & roll hall of famer for sure, come visit the four seasons museum store in union nj, yesterdays treasures watch jersey boys bus tour u tube
I prefer this version to the Walker Bros. version, there's no substitute for originality and all the Walker Bros did was take the original and tweek it a little to appeal to a younger audience of that time, but hey I'm not calling it, as cover versions go it's still good.
Please, international hits don't mean shit, that just means many people bought it, just like they bought Osmonds LPs etc. There's absolutely no correlation between the number of records you sell and how great you are, any donkey can sell enough records providing it is marketed well.
This piece is a bitch. They may have more feeling if they did it a capella. The singer and band are like they just met. Valle doesn't do a better job than the Walker Bros. I guess it's whoever you want to cut some slack.
Tell me Moorlock, do you find Scott Walker strangely homoerotic? does the deeper voiced male appeal to you more? are you more submissive around men with laryngeal prominence? it would very much seem so.
booop, Your right about international status, and I might prefer Walker Bros version because I heard it long before this one, but I think this song is better at the slightly faster tempo the Walkers used. Also the soft horns at the intro and the ending are just right for this song. The 4 Seasons, however, were undoubtedly the better outfit, one of the best of the 60s and maybe the whole history of pop.
I happen to like the Walker Bros. version very much too, infact technically speaking it might well be better in some ways than Frankie's version, but come on Moorlock don't bash Frankie, without his blueprint for this song the Walker Bros. version of "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine" might have sounded a whole lot different.
Right. Frankie as a solo and Four Seasons as a group are both in the entertainment top echelon. A few years back, I heard the Seasons' version of "Aint That A Shame" for the first time. You wouldn't think a pop vocal group could do justice to such a master as Fats Domino, but the Seasons did "Shame" their way and it's great.
In your opinion mate!! Frankie has class & is still singing.Last time I saw Scott he was hitting a beef carcass in some recording studio & calling it art/music!!! DOH! he's really come on in the last few decades!
The Walker Brothers had two No. 1 hits in the UK and several other Top 20 hits. They were bigger than The Beatles in Japan, maintaining a fan base long after they split up. "The Walker Bros. Live In Japan" is a great live album.
gaudio and crewe were supposedly writing this for the rightious brothers. frankie walked by the door of the room they were writing it in and said I WANT IT. and that was it. thats what i read somewhere, who knows how true it is
I want to see live version!

Who had the international hit? Right, The Walker Brothers, the only version of "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine (Anymore)" that matters.
moorlock2003 2 years ago
Please, international hits don't mean shit, that just means many people bought it, just like they bought Osmonds LPs etc. There's absolutely no correlation between the number of records you sell and how great you are, any donkey can sell enough records providing it is marketed well.

Frankie Valli's version sucks donkey dick.

This piece is a bitch. They may have more feeling if they did it a capella. The singer and band are like they just met. Valle doesn't do a better job than the Walker Bros. I guess it's whoever you want to cut some slack.

Scott Walker sings this song the way it is meant to be sung, with a strong barotone voice. Frankie Valli's pipsqueak vocals sound like a chipmunk.

Tell me Moorlock, do you find Scott Walker strangely homoerotic? does the deeper voiced male appeal to you more? are you more submissive around men with laryngeal prominence? it would very much seem so.

Not at all, but I definitely don't like Valli's falsetto. It sounds girly to me.

booop, Your right about international status, and I might prefer Walker Bros version because I heard it long before this one, but I think this song is better at the slightly faster tempo the Walkers used.

Yeah, and Frankie Valli hasn't been able to hit high notes in years. He needs to retire his formerly squeeky voice.

At least Walker is doing something different and avant-garde, something way out of Frankie Valli's New Jersey-asses' league!

newjersi08 Hitting a dead cow is avant garde?? The only thing that stinks is the dead cow & your opinion!

Walker Bros hardly one hit wonders, HUGE in the 60's

The Walker Brothers had two No. 1 hits in the UK and several other Top 20 hits. They were bigger than The Beatles in Japan, maintaining a fan base long after they split up. "The Walker Bros. Live In Japan" is a great live album.

On this song, The Walker Bros. Rule!

Scott Walker is good on this song, but I don't
care about one hit wonders. I like the tight
harmonies of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons much more on this song. I love Cher's version.

it kinda has that rightious brothers sound, i love Frankies version
pezhead915 3 years ago 9
gaudio and crewe were supposedly writing this for the rightious brothers. frankie walked by the door of the room they were writing it in and said I WANT IT. and that was it. thats what i read somewhere, who knows how true it is
pezhead915 3 years ago
The Walker Brothers version is just better, this one sounds to slow and drags in comparison, and Scott Walker's voice is great.

this is nothing compared to the walker brothers version

Walker bros is the best

Great song by Crewe and Gaudio........THE WALKER BROS. version in 1966 was much superior in atmospheric sound production and chart action.

Yet another beautiful neglected Four Seasons original.
