Yes, it is typical for Maine Coon cats to scoop up water in a paw and drink it from there. Maybe from once being in the wild? (They also love playing in the snow in winter!

my friends cat has a weird way of drinking water too. She only drinks water out of a certain mug, and it has to be on the coffe table in the living room. and when she drinks the water (she lowers her head to it), she runs in place with her 2 front paws. I've never seen another cat do that.

@tigerlilybug I think the cat is just doing a movement that was used to do when still a kitten to get more milk from the mum. in italian we say somehing like: it is making the dough!! because it really looks like that!! :)

omg, I just got two Coonies (12 wks old) two weeks ago and one of them is doing the same thing! I have always had cats but this is the first time I have seen one drink like yours! I find that they also use their 'hands' a lot for other things too when they play. they are very smart and incredibly cute. your kitten and the other cat are adorable :)

Just wait until one of those kittens gently pats your face with a paw. I used to sit at my computer and my big Max would stand on his haunches and rest his paw on my arm to ask for some attention. I've had many cats, but this breed has the most amazing purr-sonalites. So much fun to have new kittens ... enjoy!

We had a Maine-Coon type tabby cat who would pick up things with his mouth and carry them to the dogs' water dish. Then he would bat them around with his paw. He preferred the dog's water dish to his own.

Our Maine Coon was named Simba too when she first came to us. When we realized it was a she, we renamed her to Nala. She passed last November and I still miss her a lot.

I have a Maine Coon as well as a shorthair and it's the shorthair that often drinks of her paw. I think she likes the double-action -- drinking and cleaning at the same time.

My Maine Coon does have another trick, though. When the food bowl starts to run low, he puts one or even two balls in the bowl. In his language, this apparently means "Waiter, bring me another."

Huh, my cats do the same thing. One is a Maine Coon who only does it when the water level is low, like yours, whereas the little cat does it randomly. We've found she's not that smart and she mostly just copies the big guy, but the Maine Coon absolutely does it with purpose.

It could be, since this breed (in my unbiased opinion, ha ha) is exceptionally intelligent!  Maybe they have extra tufts of fur between their toes to help carry that water from source to mouth.

Thanks! I think it may be a self-protective instinct because the animal is more vulnerable with their head down to the water. For your kitty, it is obvious that he is simply just very smart because his head is not going to fit into that cup of milk!

That is so cute, Maine Coons love water, one of our has even gotten in the shower with me and stayed there for a while getting wet. Maine Coons are awsome.
