One of these days I'll get back there and see more of the place. I came in 1994 for the Eisteddfod but didn't really get around to seeing the countryside around there.
good video of neath as i am liveing in neath but shame the community could not stopped them pulling down the band stand in gardens it right mess now and bus stop blocked off as drunks in neath liveing on the street as that spoiled the town as been there for years and was something we all went to is gardens and sat by band stand and looked pretty to with chair to and picnic in summer to
I love seeing my hometown on the computer, lets hope it stays beautiful....well it aint got much hope with that wolly known as peter hain as the mp for neath! lol
I live in Florida but I was born in Neath..I remember swimming in the Gnoll Pond as a kid,and hearing the explosions as they destroyed what was left of Gnoll House..Happy days!
Shw mae, folks. I was born in Castell Nedd (Neath) and grew up there. Left 48 years ago to make my fortune - Twll din pob Sais - but still miss it so. Remember all the beatiful young Welsh girls, too. My best mates for life are stioll down there. Thanks for the video. Very much appreciated.
Castell Nedd is Welsh for Neath Castle. The Welsh alphabet has 28 characters whereas the English alphabet has a mere 26. Welsh is an extremely old language.
There is a 'd' and a 'dd' in the Welsh alphabet. The double 'dd' is pronounced like the 'hard' 'th' in the word 'that'. There is also a single 'l' and the double 'll' in the alphabet. The double 'll' is a difficult sound for you to say. You need to to hear it, I'm afraid.
oh wow, thanks so much! i didn't know "dd" was part of the alphapet (as one letter). i should buy a "welsh for dummies" cd, because i'm really interested in how the language sounds. i always thought that "caerdydd" is pronounced cardiff, but that's just the english way to say it, isn't it? anyway, thanks a lot for answering :D.
Look up Welsh Alphabet via Google - you'll get the complete characters.
Maybe you will be able to pronounce the double 'LL' after all. Roll your tongue behind your upper front teeth and 'blow' air through the spaces left. That's the sound of the double LL' - probably the most difficult for the non-Welsh to pronounce.I always think that one of the most difficult words to say, even for the Welsh, is Llanywchllyn. A tongue twister !
1990? great time to visit berlin, just after the wall fell *lol*. you can't imagine how much the city has changed since then. anyway, we should be talking about wales :D. i love that country! (the only places i've visited are neath [briton ferry], port talbot, cardiff and swansea, though. speaking of swansea, i wonder why it's pronounced "swanzea" and not "swan sea". english is a funny language :D :D :D.
The very beautiful classical singer Kathryn Jenkins (see her on Youtube) is from Neath - she went to the same school as me, but thousands of years later. Regretably not all Welsh girls look like Kathryn - so I married an Irish girl - they're all beautiful in Ireland.
I was brought up just outside Neath in a village called Skewen. The most famous person to come out of Skewen is the great rock singer/star Bonnie Tyler. She lived only a few hundred yards from my parent's home.
I used to play (as a boy) rugby on the Skewen RFC ground. Happy Days ! Christ, but Skewen was a great place to grow up in - but the 'social' life' and more girls were in Neath so that's where I spent most of my teenage time.
Is Bonnie Tyler still associated with Skewen RFC in some way ? I knew her mother many years ago.
I forgot to mention that the great American star Donny Osmond has Welsh ancestors - on his mother's side - from the 19th. century, I think. Osmond held a concert in honour of his Welsh ancestors up in the Rhondda Valley some months ago. All Welsh people are great singers - excepting me - but not all Welsh people are flat-out, pedal to the metal modern jazzers like me.
Best of Welsh luck to you, fella !
Incidentally, all Welsh people love to talk to complete strangers.
great pic,s 5 stars it brought back my pics of my trip to england ireland and scotland i saw york and london and edenbrough scotland trip was high school 3 week trip it was beautiful thanks for sharing effects69
Mate, it looks awesome! Thanks for sharing! At 2.07 it looks epic, like a film about Knights. You know, in my country, there's a great Welsh community, and they still keep the tea tradition and the like. There's a place called Trevelin (tre= town, velin=mill).
Matbe they still speak the language, but Ive never been to South Argentina to check it out.
Many years ago a religiously persecuted group of Welshmen and women migrated to Patagonia. Some years ago I saw a t.v. programme about their decendants. Some of their old folk still speak Welsh - but with a Spanish accent which sounds strange to my ears.
For your information, the singer Donny Osmond has Welsh ancestors - from the 19th. Century, I think.
You are correct - "Trevelin" is Mill Town. The Welsh for village is Llan, so if it was the Mill Village it would be Llanvelin.
In South Wales today they still boil seaweed, simmer it for a few hours until it forms a puree, store it in a dusting of flour and then they fry it with bacon or perhaps cockles. The boiled seaweed is called "Laverbread" (Bara Lawr in Welsh) - also called Black Butter - and is till very popular. A Welsh speciality. My brother-in-law eats it frequently.
What a great video - I really enjoyed it! I made one myself of Neath recently and now I see how much I left out! I'll have to do a 'Part Two' sometime to fill in the gaps!
Very well presented video :)
