As a US folk rocker in 1969 I discovered the 1st 3 Fairport albums in a cut out bin for $1. I noticed they did some obscure Dylan songs so I took a chance and spent $3.
To this day it is the best deal I ever got in music. 2 months later Leige & Lief was released and I just couldn't believe how fucking good they were.
They have remained one of my top five bands all time to this day.
so, so many memories came flooding back when i heard this and i'll admit a tear or two. My 1st boyfriend introduced me to Fairport ( thank you Matthew). Saw them twice back in th 70s, once in a field in Oxford n at Drury Lane.....oh to be young again. Thank you for posting this beautiful song!
How often she has gazed from castle windows all And watched the daylight passing within her captive wall With no one to heed her call The evening hour is fading within the dwindling sun And in a lonely moment, those embers will be gone And the last of all the young birds flown Her days of precious freedom, forfeited long before To live such fruitless years behind a guarded door But those days will last no more Tomorrow, at this hour, she will be far away Much farther than these islands,
hey, nice vid, i dont like to spam but check my account out if u like covers of folk, folk rock, classic rock, grunge, punk, country, psychedelic, and original songs, im sure ull enjoy it, thanks :)
Had the awesome to listen to Fairport Convention live several times and remember a concert in Harlow around 1974 when Sandy was in full flight with Fairport. A voice that will ring down the generations to come and I trust never to be forgotten God Bless you Sandy
AMAZING. Overall I like Unhalbricking better, but WWDOOH is brilliant and this is one of Sandy's best ever songs. Every Fairport album is great in some way, and the debut is too, but Sandy owns my heart:)
Different to the later Albums but just as good. Fantastically played and brilliantly sung. Great musicians don't need all the modern day tricks to create superb music.
I have really fond memory of this song. As a nipper in the late 60's my mother was about to spank me for being bold when this song was played on the radio she was so mesmarised that she stoped and just sent me to my room.
So in the years that followed I have always been just as stung. How right you are such a voice though god rest her she was dead before I was really able to appreciate her
Believe me, this album is the best thing they ever did - every track's a gem (check out their version of Dylan's "I'll Keep It With Mine") Such a pity that they changed direction so dramatically after 'Unhalfbricking'.
I agree that this is the best of the "classic" ( I hate that word!) lineup,I found just as much pleasure if not more from the later stuff.Richard and Sandy may have left, but they never did a truly bad album!.
@jet9491 Are you surprised that musicians of such talent didn't want to keep on doing covers and messing around with established genres? After all, this song, Fotheringay, is a precurser of the great work they were to produce for a short period later. As a composition I found "I'll Keep It With Mine" generic and second rate, I'm glad they moved away from that sort of thing.
@raysteer We obviously have a difference of opinion on this. Nothing wrong with that! I know, however, that many others share my view. Have a look, for example, at the excellent entry on Fairport Convention on the All Music website.
@jet9491 Thank you for your polite and considered reply. I agree it all depends where you're coming from, if you enjoy the stuff they did before the "very english electro-folk experiment" it's clear you would have wanted them to continue and develop in a similar vein. I'm a big fan of the handfull of (IMHO) great works they produced at the beginning of that period, which stand up as great music regardless of genre.
I feel the experiment ran aground because the figurehead and the captain left the fiddler at the helm (excuse the excessive imagery), not because it was destined to. Those three creative talents clearly believed they belonged in three different bands, it was maybe that big idea which kept them together long enough to create something special, without it Fotheringay might have been the last Denny/Thompson FP album, and we wouldn't be having this conversation, I suppose only they know that! (:
This so beautiful song was already a favorite of me on YT , but it was removed .
So I really hope this posting will have a better fate and survive for a very long time being enjoyed by many ! I guess you know that this song gave it's name also to a band Fotheringay with Sandy Denny,Trevor Lucas,Jerry Donahue,Gerry Conway and Pat Donaldson as members.

Sandy Denny, sadly, died much too young. But the legacy she left for this old fart is
one that I will long be thankful for.
This is a beautiful song and the vocals are quite simply brilliant. I know many grieve with me for the loss of such a wonderful talent.
Thanks Sandy - watch over us from above - gone is not forgotten!

Her voice is just so sensual, low but so intense, one of the greatest folksingers of all time.
It almost distracts you from Richard Thompson's fabulous guitar style, which made me want to play in the first place.
