  • The most perfect pop song.

  • I pulled out my twelve inch vinyl copy of this not so long ago and gave it spin. Still sounded good. He had some good musicians working with him then.

According to one of Julian's autobiographies (I have parts 1 and 2, don't know if there's more now) the similarity between "Charlotte Anne" and "charlatan" was not accidental !

  • i was pretty much raised on this song and china doll when i was just 4-6 still one of my favourite songs out there.

  • As I near the age of 40, I'm sure my marbles are slowly being lost. I bought the cd single of this. Dunno what ever happened to it, but for some reason I had completely forgotten all about this song. GOOD GOD. I BLOODY LOVED THIS SONG, AND NOW DO SO AGAIN! THANKYOU FOR POSTING THIS!!!!!

  • Mitico Cope!

  • My splendid art, my sad profession...LOL

  • My splendid art, I will betray you....

  • I will always associate this song for the age of 16. That year, I obtained my driver's license and my own 1976 Buick Skylark given to me by my grandfather. I would drive around listening to the now defunct WDRE radio which gave this song heavy rotation in October and November 1988. I remember driving my 69 year old grandmother one afternoon and she tapped her feet and nodded when the song played. "I like this song! It has a good beat." She exclaimed. She surprised me but she was right!Good song

  • Masterpiece.

  • An instant classic which has not dated a bit. By all means, check out Julian's memoirs "Head On" and "Repossessed" for further insight, and definitely get into The Teardrop Explodes as well as all of the solo Cope LPs. Your heart will explode, and your mind will be BLOWN.

  • Just saw this video and heard the song for the first time Saturday on VH-1's 80's videos A to Z. Wow.....excellent tune. How could I have missed it before??

  • Julian loves race cars toys, if you want to make his day, give him one!

  • The Arch Druid!

  • En perfecto balance la melodia y la melancolia se abrazan para lograr esta esplendida canción. Cope es genial.

  • lol

my sister names anne and my name is charlotte

  • lol my name is charlotte n my middle name is anne

  • not to disturb you, but did you notice that he is actually saying "charlatan"?

  • jfkrone,

Funny! I too thought that CHARLATAN was the name of this song for like 20 fuckin' years!?! lol

    Still a Great song!

  • umm-no ,he's saying charlotte-anne!!!

  • yeah freakin put it on itunes

  • unfortunately Charlotte Anne is not available on iTunes -- weird

  • love this song

  • i want that fuckin guitar man!!!!

  • Send some of Julian's song up with the next interplanetary probe and the extra terrestrials will be popping in before you can say Jack Robinson!

  • I agree,it would be nice to have some new stuff..but I think all that acid he`s had has wellied his head!!

  • The world needs more Julian Cope!

  • I always thought he said SHOUT IT...not Charlotte....

  • classic...haven't heard this in a looonnnggg time. Thank you!

  • This video makes me cold and shivery, in a GOOD way.

Does anyone else think he looks like Ralph Fiennes in this?

  • i thought that i was the only person to feel the same way about this song. if you are in bed at night and listen to this with no video, listen close! this song will scare the HELL out of you!

  • Fantastic!!!

  • Yes, it is true! I am his chauffeur and he is a fussy passenger.

  • perfect song!

  • my nation underground fkin brilliant

  • Yeah, that album and St Julian, Peggy Suicide a bit.

Then it all went a bit strange.

  • wow, people do use the term: SLUGGED!!!!??. texans everywhere.. tara

  • love this so much!

  • I'll be the designated driver tonight. Just shut the fuck up.

  • I once almost slugged a guy for saying the reason Julian Cope wasn't more popular was that we already had one Peter Murphy. I love Peter Murphy but Julian dances worlds around him in terms of creativity.

  • great song, he reminds me of david bowie in this vid. is it true he's never driven a car?

  • He unfortunatley has to drive, he addressed this in a song on autogedden, Aint no getting round getting round, where he parodies himself for driving a 'cavalier' and kinda plays the crowd asking him why he drives and doesnt walk everywhere like Merlin, the reason is he hopes to raise awareness of our lost link to Mother Earth. The only way he can reach enough people to spread the word, get Autogedden its good!!!

  • he is the green man for us all to listen to..

  • anther great track from jc

  • Great song! Atmospheric. Always reminds me of the road from Penzance to Morvah - having this on the radio as we drove across the misty moor and past the Quoits was really quite eerie.

  • ian mcculloch, julian cope and pete wylie were briefly together in a band called the mighty three. years later julian was sued by ian mcculloch over a song called space hopper from his '86 album which he had written.

  • i thought it was the crucial three?

  • Love this song....

  • he has such pretty eyes.

  • This guy must feel guilty for the death of Pete de Frietes.

  • ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN

  • rock trivia:

Ian McCulloch and Julian cope used to be in a band together

  • answer: The Crucial Three

  • I forgot all about this guy! Whatever happened to him?

  • He wrote an amazing book about stone circles in the UK - called the Modern Antiquarian - it's fantastic

  • Right on Betty!

  • i want the european megalithic, got the antiquarian.....funds are short to many puffs....but at least theres loads of circles recumbant or not in grampian so at least i can visit them.

Lets hope he goes back on tour not as some other band but as cope, missed the drain bonner stuff

  • He just put out a new album called "You Gotta Problem With Me" in 2007

  • I love this song! Julian Cope is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I've always loved this song and Julian Cope. I too love skinny blokes. reminds me of how crazy about this song I was when it first came out.

  • Out of nowhere I started singing this a few days ago. I'm having a Teardrop explodes / Copey trip thru Y'tube it's Brilliant stuff and performances, wish there was more here like the whole Wilder 1/2 hour from the 82 whistle test show.

  • certainly a fave of mine,,i got to agree with ceeforina. lovely and skinny and fantastic, oh and antiquariany

  • Ah what a great song! I had forgotten who sung it until today! Thank you so much for putting it here!

  • He is a fantastical, antiquariany, skinny lovely bloke !

  • :O THATS MY NAME AHHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAH

    lvoe it (H)

  • what an artist great guy!

  • Cope at his cadaverous best. Good band too, crisp and yet spacey.

  • WOW! Haven't heard this in ages...beautiful, ethereal, lovely, takes me back. What ever happened to beautiful Julian Cope?!

  • Hes suing Ian Mcchulloch!

  • I completely forgot about this guy! Whatever happened to him?

  • lax. perfect song. just one note. beautifull melody. try to do one youself. st. julian.

  • julian the last person i would call "charlatan"

you help me cope, when "i can't hardly stand it"

  • i think that he was truggling with being a "rock star" vs. being human.

i do have to say, though, that he was apparently going through a particularly thin period in his bodily life...

  • Love this song. Also "China Doll" from the same album.

  • Copey you do understand

  • this is cool

  • ridiculously well done.

  • yes, perfected to the degree where the teeth-shining perfectionism commits itself to its intend. He realley

shouldn´t pulled his mouth that open.

  • Wow, i`ve not heard this in years. I remember when Peter Powell played this on his Radio 1 breakfast show, he thought it was so good, he then played it again. I`ve not heard of any DJ doing that before. Well done Mr Cope.

  • Oh my god, I remember that very moment like it was yesterday! I stood in my tracks. That was an epiphany for me! Glad someone else remembers it.

  • Yes!! Thanks for posting. I've waited for years to hear this deep, dark, sepulchral song again. Always reminds me of Lanyon Quoit in Cornwall - probably because that is also deep, dark and sepulchral. Gives me a shiver of delight.

  • when was this?

    expatbeen awayforaveryfrickenlongtime

  • I have always loved this song Mr. Cope brillant and amazing...

  • thank you

  • pure class

  • who was the lead guitarist

  • Donald Ross Skinner

  • one of my top 5 EVER songs. Get real Julian

  • great. just one note. great.

  • Great song, great memories!

  • UMG, sit and spin, tossers!!!!!!!!!

  • Cope is one of the best ever, even if Island was trying to make him into an alterna-star back then. Peggy Suicide should be in everyone's top 10.

  • He might of hated it but as a fan i loved all the stages in his career. The body of work is immaculate, god bless youtube for letting people put these up..

  • He said he hated this stage of his career, what with the whole studio makeover he was forced to endure, but this is one of my top 5 Julian Cope songs.

  • True; they forced him to be more commercial, but this is one of his masterpieces (his rendition of "5 O'Clock World", however, is pitiful...)
