  • I would know : Is that tune Irish or Scottish ?

  • @muzikamuz The song (words) would be Scottish. At least seeing that he goes hunting by the River Spey - in Scotland. (at least thats the way i understand it) I couldn't say where the original tune (music) came from.

  • @jayrbee60, Really ? I have seen other lyrics : So I took up my dog, and him I did shoot, all down in the county KILDARE...( Near from Dublin ).

Well, let's forget it, no matter from where that tune comes, it's a beautiful song, and you play it awesome.

  • Isn´t that a great phrase: So be easy and free, when you´re drinking with me. I´m a man you don´t meet every day.

  • Yes it is! or Come fill up your glasses with Brandy or Wine - whatever it costs, I will pay! What a cool dude! :-)

  • the better solo version !

    great !

  • Nicely done, thanks, and a great song. Aren´t these words awesome "Be easy and free, when you´re drinking with me, I´m a man you don´t meet every day."

  • Thanks for visiting again and the nice comment. Yes, the words endeared me to this song as a nice sort of philosophy! Have a great day!

  • Oh, I have just realized I posted more or less the same comment three months ago. I think it´s called amnesia...

But please keep going, your renditions are so heartfelt and honest.

  • :-) Dont feel bad (I forget too - ask my wife) and it is still a nice refreshing compliment and I appreciate it!

  • What´s that? Did you forget your wedding anniversary? Happened to me once...

  • Great rendition of this song.

  • Thank you! I actually learned and fell in love with this song from bodhrannf's version. You should check it out. his guitar take is fabulous!

  • Just did. Very nice version, great guitar indeed, thanks for referring it.

  • if you can find it, check out the Barley Corn version of this tune.

    Best I've ever heard.

  • Aww Man! I can't find it. If you can post the link I would certainlny appreciate it. If not, could you message it to me? Bodhrannf also has an extremely good version.

  • A fine rendition...the Brandy does indeed allude to a time we Scots were joined at the hip with France under what we called the "Auld alliance" having worked with many Frenchmen, they have never heard of it!...at that time Scots were known to drink more wine and Claret than Whiskey...

  • Thanks again! I further appreciate the clarification in regards to the brandy and wine.

  • To answer your question (or try): I think wine and brandy, made from wine, was rarer in Scotland than beer and whiskey. A man you wouldn't meet every day could afford the rarer drinks.

The singer of "The wild rover" was offered "Wines and whiskeys of the best" when he put 10 crowns sterling on the bar.

  • Thanks alot! That actually makes sense. Funny you should mention "the wild rover" I've been thinking of doing it as I play it all time at home. Thanks for commenting, I really appreciate it!

  • Oh - Nice singing and playing, by the way!

    Cheers!

  • My knowledge of brandy is lacking (being a scotch man myself), but the only way I can rationalize brandy in a scottish song if this nature would be to mention that historically the French and Scottish had close relations (originated back when both France and Scotland fought against England). Maybe there is some french influence in this area? (I really don't know). Beyond that, maybe the composer actually favoured brandy to whisky. All this is speculation of course.

Good job on the song btw.

  • You were the one that inspired me to try this one so I thank you!!!

  • Hey John,I really like this song(and the meaning)I have listened to alot of versions of this song and like yours the best. Not just because we are friends(cause you know how brutally honest I can be)It's just good.

  • Thanks Jim! I think the meaning strikes home to the likes of us very much. With all we've been through, and all we've done together, at the end of the day - here it is - be easy and free, just tell me like it is. Thanks!

  • Wish you still lived here,I would have you teach me this one. What are the chords?

  • G, D, and C. I'll email you the way I learned it. Glad you liked it!

  • That´s a great song - so be easy and free, when you´re drinking with me, I´m a man you don´t meet every day.

  • Yes very catchy! And thanks for adding me as a friend!

  • If you want to hear some fabulous guitar to this tune, check out bodhrannf's video under the name "I'm a man you don't meet everyday". Very catchy tune! Thanks again!

  • Thank you very much! I really appreciate your comment, particularly with the company you keep!
