In the UK there was a division in the mainstream, between utter nonsense on top of the pops (look up totp 1976 to see what i mean) and deep music with hour-long guitar solos, there was no music that really appealed to youths of the time. That's why punk happened in the uk, the sex pistols were all about being shocking, Sid Vicious couldn't even play bass

This is an example of why DLR got fired. I know kids on the net LOVE DLR but at the end of the day most fans who were actually alive at the time backed Sammys albums and not DLRs solo career - Eat Em and Smile or 5150 come on, prefer DLR? Really? I've played with people too drunk to play on stage and it ain't fun. If I was Eddie I would have smacked him and sacked him after this show. The only good live clips of Dave are in the early days. Other than that Mike held down the vocals.

I was there as well & have lots of good memories: On Van Halen 1- Roth was majorly fucked up (but so was I). 2- A flying saucer & an alien talking before VH. Very Wierd. 3 - MAJOR heat.during the day & cold at night 4- people burning styrofoam for heat choking us out. 5- Losing my car in the parking lot.

Great memories of the US Festival! Came down from Seattle and it didn't dissapoint! By the time Van Halen came on during Day 2.....I was burned out from two days of incredible heat! It was so damn hot! I was 17 and up close for Van Halen! Good memories!
I was at this show & we were freezing from the water cannons earlier that day.Van Halen took way too fucking long to come out and play after the Scorpions.We ended up leaving after they played about 5 songs.It was a blast though 325,000 people.
David Lee Roth is pretty much the quintessential douche bag. He demanded an extra half a million dollars to headline, where as the Clash demanded that most of the proceeds go to charitable organizations. I don't give a shit if the Clash puts ice tea in Jack Daniels, they're actually decent human beings.
I was ast this show and remember that people were disappointed in Van Halen for showing up drunk and receiving a rumored million dollars for it. It had been a very long show by that time as well. Alot of people just wanted to call it quits.

There's an interview online with their old photographer that toured with them in all their early yeas. He said that during ALL their early shows, at some pre-arranged cue, he would throw a roll of toilet paper at Roth's head so Roth could use that same "I gonna fuck your girlfriend pal line".

I may not remember it correctly but as I remember .it was a huge party most were in a good state of mind after a day of Partaking in our favorite beverages and any thing else that was being passed around. I along with those around stayed till the end of the night and loved it. Roth said that and everyone went wild he was just being a smart ass as he usually was. That guy up front sure got a funny look on his face after. Van Halen was great whenever you saw them or met up with them back then.
Remember it like it was the other day. I also remember that the Scorpions, who played before them, stole the show. Halfway through the VH set I remember a huge exodus of po'd fans looking at each other saying "WTF was that???".

This is an example of why DLR got fired. I know kids on the net LOVE DLR but at the end of the day most fans who were actually alive at the time backed Sammys albums and not DLRs solo career - Eat Em and Smile or 5150 come on, prefer DLR? Really? I've played with people too drunk to play on stage and it ain't fun. If I was Eddie I would have smacked him and sacked him after this show. The only good live clips of Dave are in the early days. Other than that Mike held down the vocals.

@fatShowPony ..but let me tell you this, I have played with people who always told me what to do on stage and complained I ever drank and acted crazy. eventually we could not go on anymore, too many fights and lack of respect, They really thought I was the fool, ALL of them against me. Fine. None of them performs, my new band and I have been on countless shows on TV and still keep rocking... It is also a matter of letting go, it is a key to creativity and talent

@dariopalladino Yeah I fully agree with what your saying - i've also played with non drinking control freaks who don't do enough practice then act like any problems with the band are my fault cause I like a drink when the real problem is they don't practice enough, there are many excellent examples of people who enjoy drinking and are great on stage Eddie himself till he got too old - I just think Dave crossed the line and fell over it way too many times. I was there as well & have lots of good memories: On Van Halen 1- Roth was majorly fucked up (but so was I). 2- A flying saucer & an alien talking before VH. Very Wierd. 3 - MAJOR heat.during the day & cold at night 4- people burning styrofoam for heat choking us out. 5- Losing my car in the parking lot.

Great memories of the US Festival! Came down from Seattle and it didn't dissapoint! By the time Van Halen came on during Day 2.....I was burned out from two days of incredible heat! It was so damn hot! I was 17 and up close for Van Halen! Good memories!

I was at this show & we were freezing from the water cannons earlier that day.Van Halen took way too fucking long to come out and play after the Scorpions.We ended up leaving after they played about 5 songs.It was a blast though 325,000 people.

I was ast this show and remember that people were disappointed in Van Halen for showing up drunk and receiving a rumored million dollars for it. It had been a very long show by that time as well. Alot of people just wanted to call it quits.

There's an interview online with their old photographer that toured with them in all their early yeas. He said that during ALL their early shows, at some pre-arranged cue, he would throw a roll of toilet paper at Roth's head so Roth could use that same "I gonna fuck your girlfriend pal line".

I may not remember it correctly but as I remember .it was a huge party most were in a good state of mind after a day of Partaking in our favorite beverages and any thing else that was being passed around. I along with those around stayed till the end of the night and loved it. Roth said that and everyone went wild he was just being a smart ass as he usually was. That guy up front sure got a funny look on his face after. Van Halen was great whenever you saw them or met up with them back then.

They got paid a reported $1Million to play a one hour for this show. In 1983, that was considered outrageous.
For fans, like me, it was appropriate. They'd worked hard to give us so much great music in the previous 5 years! I saw them for $8.50 in 1981.
