they don't need gustavsson to save the day? i think he did, his first NHL shutout and if he stays healthy i think he can be better the henrik lundquivst and he proved that in sweden so its great.
"they don't need him to save the day here....just make a few saves each day that he plays."--wow. what a hater. the monster is like batman on ice. Go Leafs Go!
Rask is going to be very, very good (that was a REALLY bad trade) ... but THE MONSTER is even better. Jonas will absolutely own this league for the next 20 yrs.
I havent had this much fun watching a Leaf goalie since Mike Palmateer, and with Allaire in the house (the most important thing the Leafs have done since the Dougie deal ... and certainly the best FA signing we've made in my lifetime) ... Im just about ready to 'get my Wang on' and sign JG to a 50 year contract!!!
Give him time. He's long, outstanding lateral movement. Great reflexes. Covers the bottom of the net well, and he's really active out there. He also has the best goaltending coach in the world working with him.
The ACC absolutely loves him too ... one save and everyone goes nuts!
Now, Im not saying he's going to be "Hasek in his prime" immediately, but I could definitely see him being a top-15 goalie by end of this year, and just getting better and better from there.
Very much this. Gustavsson has all the tools to become a very, very good goaltender in this league. A pleasant departure from Vesa Lolskala if you're a Leafs fan.
Agree completely - its tough to predict with goalies. Even really good ones can run hot and cold and can lose confidence after a bad game (see: Liut, Mike), much less a bad season. Look at Carey Price - he could win a Vezina or be out of the league in 2 years.
Jonas looks to me like a bigger, faster version of Cujo - a guy who can go mental during the playoffs and win a series now and then. VERY technically sound too.
In fact, its important to remember with him the year he's been having personally.
Moving countries is stressful - add to that the fact that the poor guy has lost both parents, and been in the hospital twice for heart procedures (scary as hell). How does he respond? By keeping his head in straight in the most savage media market in the NHL (its killing Toskala, and already spit Pogge out). By all accounts, Jonas seems to have a lot of mental strength. I like that .. and wish him all the best.
Not so sure about that. Hopefully Jonas can adjust to the NHL game properly. He has been a tad hot and cold for my liking. Having a great game followed by so-so/disappointing results the next. If he is going to dominate, it is probably a few years away.
i think thats where pittsburgh went wrong too, putting crosby as captain. but hes lived up to the C, so who's to say we're going to be putting pressure on them.
We're in Toronto, the media circus. There's your pressure. The players get criticized enough after playing one bad game. I wouldn't give them a C to increase that pressure.
Schenn was just benched for 3 straight games. He couldn't even stay in the lineup. I'll give him a few years to develop into a better player than he is now. If this team has immediate playoff hopes, they need someone with a C. Komisarek or Beauchemin are the guys in my opinion.
Yes I agree Beauchemin would be a good captain, but he hasn't with the Leafs long enough. Kaberle has spent his 10 years with the Leafs and since Sundin and McCabe are both gone, Kaberle is the IDEAL person to wear the C in my opinion.

Such a shame Toronto gave up on Tuukka Rask. He was the better pick between him and Pogge.

Komi for captain, in my opinion.

Nah i say Phil Kessel for captain.
SKiLLz2WicKeD 2 years ago
Why put more pressure on a young player? That's almost as bad as saying Luke Schenn for captain.
I believe Luke Schenn is captain material, but right now? No to both of them.
