I was born in 1967 and lived in Detroit by Michigan and Livernois, I have seen a beautiful and very vibrant city go from prosperity and neighborly, to destroyed, poor and, overrun by drugs and criminals. That this happened to coincide with Blacks being in control is not mere coincidence, look at Africa. Highland Park used to be a great place to live as well, everything around this Black bastion has been destroyed, and now it's White's rebuilding it once again.
Detroit WAS beautiful & lush! 1967(during civil rights, MLK, Motown startd)--we lived in Green Acres near 8 mi, went to Pastuer elem--a white girl! INsightful. Rough areas WERE near LIvernois & other areas. In the '30's-'40's-Detroit was a thriving high society! People need Jobs, Motivation, Education to think smart & have plans. Co. decision-makers dropped the ball & did not keep up with foreign compet.
And why did the Industry leave? BECAUSE the auto unions made it impossible to fire worthless pieces of shit, and it came to a point the average auto worker in Detroit cost 3 times as much to employ than a comparable factory in another state.

I was raised in Highland Park (Tuxedo and Woodward). We had a big beautiful house and everyone in my neighborhood worked hard for their families. I saw it change - the riots didn't change it. Dirty cops, corrupt politicians and looking the other way when crime became prevalent. It was the beginning of the crack trade.
No one wanted to snitch and any law abiding person that wanted to be safe moved on (me included). Don't get me wrong, I know fixing Highland Park is a HUGE chanllenge.

Nice thought, but government HAS NOTHING. Government can't pay anyone to do anything without taking from someone else. There's no one left there for the government to steal from.
The government should train people and small businesses involved in demolition, tree removal, excavation and farming. Then pay them to clear these dangerous homes. Much of what has been dumped could be recycled. If it's got metal in it, it's worth money. What's left could be consolidated into one block. Why not make the good land available for families to garden in so they can provide free food. The really large tracts could be granted to churches and such to provide for their congregation.
In reality, most of these buildings are a liability and need to be removed. Large portions of Detroit (and Highland Park) need to be turned into - essentially - green spaces.
...but that was NOT why they were corrupt. I am surprised that they would do what they did do, with their illegal and bad political decisions, to their own people. Just a History lesson for Rev David Bullock. The area you showed was on Grand &Linwood was a combat zone at least 60 years ago. I lived 2 blocks east of there. I would never go west of Hamilton Blvd without a M60 Machine Gun. That is why Willard School is abandoned. I don;t understand why Ferris Elementary was abandoned. That was in a nice area.
Unfortunately the demise of Highland Park and Detroit was due to the 1967 riots. I grew up in Highland Park and it was safe to walk the streets until 1968. By 1970 it was a combat zone. The auto industry had nothing to do with it. My fellow soul brothers did it and you know it.

I was raised in Highland Park (Tuxedo and Woodward). We had a big beautiful house and everyone in my neighborhood worked hard for their families. I saw it change - the riots didn't change it. Dirty cops, corrupt politicians and looking the other way when crime became prevalent. It was the beginning of the crack trade.
No one wanted to snitch and any law abiding person that wanted to be safe moved on (me included). Don't get me wrong, I know fixing Highland Park is a HUGE chanllenge.

@mswonderful19 I too lived on Tuxedo btwn 2nd and 3rd and you are so right about how it use to be and what happened to our city. I left in 1981, and eleven years later we gave up my parents home and rental property because it was hopeless.

The government should train people and small businesses involved in demolition, tree removal, excavation and farming. Then pay them to clear these dangerous homes. Much of what has been dumped could be recycled. If it's got metal in it, it's worth money. What's left could be consolidated into one block. Why not make the good land available for families to garden in so they can provide free food. The really large tracts could be granted to churches and such to provide for their congregation.

In reality, most of these buildings are a liability and need to be removed. Large portions of Detroit (and Highland Park) need to be turned into - essentially - green spaces.

it is true that after the riots people were afraid and moved away. GM played a very small role in the current condition. It was the riots (which happened because of the inequality, which is a shame because most of the white people who lived in the city did not hate nor fear the blacks, but the policy on housing was unfair that is the government not the people though it should be OF the people) then after the riots there was a series of very corrupt politicians. I think the point nobody makes here is that you don't need all of this anymore The city population does not mandate all of these buildings and services any longer. REgardless of how it happened, it is the result of depopulation. There is nothing that can be done to repair it. Just compartmentalize the people and take care of what you can afford.

When will residence take control of whats going on. To speak on these "so-call" leaders that we have I would be ashamed to even call myself the mayor or anything that has to do with this. Just a History lesson for Rev David Bullock. The area you showed was on Grand &Linwood was a combat zone at least 60 years ago. I lived 2 blocks east of there. I would never go west of Hamilton Blvd without a M60 Machine Gun. That is why Willard School is abandoned. I don;t understand why Ferris Elementary was abandoned. That was in a nice area.

Unfortunately the demise of Highland Park and Detroit was due to the 1967 riots. I grew up in Highland Park and it was safe to walk the streets until 1968. By 1970 it was a combat zone. The auto industry had nothing to do with it. My fellow soul brothers did it and you know it.

Detroit was always a racist city, from every angle. Jews looked down on the poor wasps and ethnic catholics. Wasps looked down on the catholics, Everybody looked down on the blacks. It was just squabbling ethnic groups all through the boom years. Other cities were like it but for some reason Detroit never caught a ledge and just kept falling.
