Hmm, this port looks pretty fun (for an Atari game), but it makes me wonder how well the actual arcade version played, as I just never seen an arcade game of Jr. Pac Man, ever. And I was part of the arcade generation, so that's kinda weird.
The larger pellets are a result of not going after the Toys and food such as the bicycle or the rootbeer. If the those icons reach your power pellets, it burns one of them up into a little fire ball. This game actually requires you to go after them where on Ms. Pacman they are simply for points.
Aside from the fast speed, I'm pretty impressed by this port. The ghosts don't flicker until they're all on the screen and most importantly their eyes move in the direction they are headed - the only Pac game on 2600 where they do this. The toys make the dots fatter and slow Jr. down, Jr's animations are pretty much identical to the arcade version. The music and sound effects are pretty darn close too. The hackers who made Pac-Man arcade should've used this as a base
My mom bought this game for me and my brother at a store closing sale probably around 1989/1990 for $2.00. As someone who has always loved fast-paced arcade games, I played this game to death and it is still my favourite PM game of all time.:) There are some cool little touches like the larger-size pellets making a different SFX and giving you more points.
I had a short little Pac Man paperback book, too. He was married to Ms. Pac Man and they of course had their son, Jr.:)
Holy shit, I had this game around 1987 or 1988! While I had moved on to NES at the time, I did play the fuck out of this game when I still had an Atari 2600.
The bigger dots that slow you down aren't random. They get created by the toy passing over the dot. If you don't get the toy in time, it will go to one of your power pellets and explode, destroying the power pellet. Otherwise, a great review.
I remember this one well from growing up in the 80s. I played it when I was like 10. If I had a time machine, one of the first things I would do would be to go back and play this again with myself.
Jr. Pacman was the first pacman game I ever played. They had the arcade version in my dentist waiting room. I was so disappointed when I played pacman for the first time lol. I didn't how there was only one tiny maze.
The hat on Jr.'s head is called a "propeller beanie". Anyway, great review! And I TOTALLY agree with the overall rating. The only thing I failed to hear was about the animation. But, then again, they saw it. XP
@AqualungGameReviews wrong, the last one was in 2008, it was supposed to be released in 1983, but due to some problems "Actionauts" came out in 2008 as a special collectors game
Most of the games (like Jr. Pac-Man) released in the late 80s have a Copyright date of 1984. That's because they were originally scheduled to release that year, but Tramel took-over and declared "Atari is no longer a game company".
Then in 1986 he changed his mind because he needed some fast cash, so out came all the games that had been stagnating in warehouses.
@soulcitysigma This game, and a bunch of others, were actually made in 1984, just around the time of the videogame crash, when Warner sold Atari's domestic side to the Tramiels. They shelved all the video game consoles for several years while focusing on the home computers, eventually changing their minds several years after the NES hit. So we got these fantastic "red label" 2600 games in 1987, which were some of the console's best games - Jr. Pac, Midnight Magic, Solaris, Radar Lock, etc.
I wish my real Atari 2600 has as clear as a picture as the emulator footage used in this video. Pac-Man games are a bit harder to capture properly due to the high flicker rate. The maximum amount of frames will make it so you can see all the ghosts properly.
Hmm, this port looks pretty fun (for an Atari game), but it makes me wonder how well the actual arcade version played, as I just never seen an arcade game of Jr. Pac Man, ever. And I was part of the arcade generation, so that's kinda weird.

The larger pallets are made by the toys if they float over them, in case you didn't know
They also destroy power pellets they float over them in the arcade version, but I don't know if that happens in this version, I don't own it (yet)

Pac-man 2600 - good if you pretend it's "crazy chase" or some other clone
Ms. Pac-Man - brightly colored but waaaaaay too easy. Also the mazes are wrong. Nowhere near accurate to the arcade.
Jr. Pac-Man - Arcade accurate. They match in difficulty and gameplay.

I think it was Secret Quest in the U.S., which has a copyright of 1989. I think Sentinel was released in Europe in 1990.
Save Mary may list 1990 as it's release date on the Flashback 2, I'm not sure, but it wasn't ever released anyway, although Axlon did finish it.
