I really want to get into buying silver, but I've heard so many different things. Like I should buy coins and not bars, I shouldn't buy.999 silver because of the premiums and all of this. I'm looking to keep my money safe, I'm not necessarily looking to tremendously augment my wealth. Can somebody clear this up for me?

@mikerowphone People are falling over themselves to buy precious metal (and driving the price up) because money isn't trustworthy to many people any more.
I remember when my wife almost murdered me for buying 5 of the monster boxes. They were 3800 each then. Now there 25000 each. If silver goes to 1000 dollars an ounce that would be 500,000 dollars each a box! I also have about 10 gold buffalo coins. And the most important thing to protect all that. My m4-a1 patrol rifle, my mossberg 500 tac persuader, my police carry glock 22, and my r-700.
Yuou might want to wait until they correct . Histrorically gold and silver trade lower in the summer months. the debt/ceiling issue is causing the latest runup. If they resolve this by Aug 2 then the metals will correct. thats when i plan to add to my inventory. Course the idiots in washington can't be counted on to do the right thing. Its possible they raise the ceiling without cuts and then the metals may take off and not correct. Its a gamble. either way.

@cutlerylover Thought not, travel and you will find reality is so very different to what you seem to assume, i will admit the dollar is the mostly widely accepted currency but 99% of stores outside the usa simply have no use for a dollar unless of course they are in a highly tourist type area with loads of americans and thus loads of dollars are around the place. However the notion that you could walk into any store worldwide and wave your dollar and instantly get what you need just isnt true

@cutlerylover Well I don't want to start an argument but the US dollar is not accepted anywhere in Europe, you have to exchange the dollars in to local currency first be it the Euro or the currency used the in country that your in. If you mean that the US dollar is accepted in exchange offices then yes, but so is other currency, I wouldn't say that the dollar is more popular then other currencies today, at least not in Europe. =)

Although I prefer to exchange my money out of courtesy, I know that the U.S. Dollar is accepted nearly everywhere. That is changing some because of the excessive debt our socialist politicians are creating, but I've had little trouble using dollars. I wouldn't brag too much about the pound or euro, after all, you'll be using dinars soon when your country is conquered by the muslims.

it doesn't make silver a bad investment, but it does temper the benefits. when this video was made, there was a 12x increase in silver from 1964-2010. interest at 5.5% would give you equal benefit. after capital gains tax of 28%, a 5% annual rate would have you break even.
silver is still better (and silver has been WAY better in the 10 months since this video was made.), but analysis needs to be complete.

Well the thing about keeping a physical asset like precious metals is storage. If you live out in the country side or have access to a safety deposit box then no problem. If you're a city dweller living in an apartment then it's more than a little difficult. Since I have a brokerage account I chose to buy shares of SLV. You should also know that there are other precious metal ETF's and ETN's you could buy shares in rather than the physical asset.
I have just invested in some silver at it's highest rate in 20 years. I feel dumb but i like having something that isn't paper. You have to check out the new stage coach bullion from northwest territorial mint.
It really does help you save. It is easy to sell it and get the cash, but it psychologically its harder to justify selling it, especially when your goal is just to eventually buy more anyway. Why leave your savings in the bank for 2 percent. these banks just get free money, why give them your money..
If you take those silver eagles into pay one dollar, you are getting ridiculously ripped off... those have way more silver in them than just 1 dollar. My dad gets us them for christmas and birth day
Thanks for sharing, however I think it is too late to start to invest in precious metals now because they are at an all time high. Prices will start to drop within a year as the recession eases and won't rise back to this high for a long long time. You really have to be pessimistic regarding your future to invest in gold or silver right now and if you are correct then precious metals won't do you much good as they can not be eaten.

Both coins have the same weight, but one is more pure. One is 99.9% pure silver, meaning is can have up to 1/10th of one percent worth of impurities (of non-gold). The other is 99.99% meaning it can only have 1/100th of impurities (non gold).
However, the difference of actual weight of gold between 1/10th of an ounce and 1/100th of an ounce is pretty insignificant, so the amount of impurities between the two is meaningless.
@TheTrueJBV3737 the .999 does not show the ending values of a percentage (i.e. .999 does not equal 99.'999' % ) it is a decimal showing that decimal of a maximum value of 1 (being 100%). Therefore, .999 would be only 99.9%, and the more pure the gold is in % it would translate into decimal identically, .9999 would be 99.99%, .99999 would be 99.999% and so on. (only the decimal place is moved) the most pure gold coin I've seen is a Canadian gold maple that is 6-9 (.999999). Hope this helps!

@urkingod 999 fine pure silver does not tarnish. silver alloys like sterling silver is 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. its the base metals like copper than tarnishes.

@cutlerylover Well I don't want to start an argument but the US dollar is not accepted anywhere in Europe, you have to exchange the dollars in to local currency first be it the Euro or the currency used the in country that your in. If you mean that the US dollar is accepted in exchange offices then yes, but so is other currency, I wouldn't say that the dollar is more popular then other currencies today, at least not in Europe. =)

@toweronepower I've traveled all over the world (Europe, Africa, South America, Middle East, etc.). Although I prefer to exchange my money out of courtesy, I know that the U.S. Dollar is accepted nearly everywhere. That is changing some because of the excessive debt our socialist politicians are creating, but I've had little trouble using dollars. I wouldn't brag too much about the pound or euro, after all, you'll be using dinars soon when your country is conquered by the muslims.

the "gallon of gas" bit is ignoring the opp. cost of metals, which is no interest.
it doesn't make silver a bad investment, but it does temper the benefits. when this video was made, there was a 12x increase in silver from 1964-2010. interest at 5.5% would give you equal benefit. after capital gains tax of 28%, a 5% annual rate would have you break even.
silver is still better (and silver has been WAY better in the 10 months since this video was made.), but analysis needs to be complete.

Well the thing about keeping a physical asset like precious metals is storage. If you live out in the country side or have access to a safety deposit box then no problem. If you're a city dweller living in an apartment then it's more than a little difficult. Since I have a brokerage account I chose to buy shares of SLV. You should also know that there are other precious metal ETF's and ETN's you could buy shares in rather than the physical asset.

It really does help you save. It is easy to sell it and get the cash, but it psychologically its harder to justify selling it, especially when your goal is just to eventually buy more anyway. Why leave your savings in the bank for 2 percent. these banks just get free money, why give them your money..

Thanks for sharing, however I think it is too late to start to invest in precious metals now because they are at an all time high. Prices will start to drop within a year as the recession eases and won't rise back to this high for a long long time. You really have to be pessimistic regarding your future to invest in gold or silver right now and if you are correct then precious metals won't do you much good as they can not be eaten.

Both coins have the same weight, but one is more pure. One is 99.9% pure silver, meaning is can have up to 1/10th of one percent worth of impurities (of non-gold). The other is 99.99% meaning it can only have 1/100th of impurities (non gold).
However, the difference of actual weight of gold between 1/10th of an ounce and 1/100th of an ounce is pretty insignificant, so the amount of impurities between the two is meaningless.

@TheTrueJBV3737 the .999 does not show the ending values of a percentage (i.e. .999 does not equal 99.'999' % ) it is a decimal showing that decimal of a maximum value of 1 (being 100%). Therefore, .999 would be only 99.9%, and the more pure the gold is in % it would translate into decimal identically, .9999 would be 99.99%, .99999 would be 99.999% and so on. (only the decimal place is moved) the most pure gold coin I've seen is a Canadian gold maple that is 6-9 (.999999). Hope this helps!
