thanks for uploading this ouvre. It's a beautiful parable. It's also fascinating how a donkey can convey such profound emotions. The way the donkey resists its sadistic masters greatly contrasts the girl's masochism.
@bonChic20 I agree. The best example is when Balthazar confronts the animals in the circus stable. His suffering is enough to cause the animals to react.
Ironic, that the most humanizing aspect of this film was the donkey. But I believe that was Bresson's main intention.
A very profound film indeed. I am amazed at the amount of philosophical depth that was conveyed throughout it's minimalist structure. It definitely deserves a second look from anyone who had trouble understanding it's message.
thank you very much for sharing this, is a real long time since i wanted to watch this one, it might not be my favorite by Bresson, but of course is an important one, and it is a shame that not everybody is able to appreciate it,
Thank you very much for sharing with us. I do wish the message to be spread that the film in its entirety is available on youtube! What an accomplishment of yours. If only a fraction of the viewers discover the elevating beauty behind, your effort will be more than rewarded. All the best.

Probably one of the most overrated "masterpieces" of all time. Robert Bresson has nothing meaningful or insightful to say with this movie besides "life sucks, deal with it." Sorry, Monsieur Bresson, but this is only shallow defeatism masquerading as poignant transcendence.
In the midst of an economic recession and a world pandemic, I don't need an artsy-fartsy French "auteur" lecturing me on the futility of struggle. This is the time for hope, not despair.
are you kidding me ? Nobody wins ? The good bad and ugly all lose ? Even the poor donkey dies ? What kills me is the creeps who get away with hurting everybody in the story never get pay back...I don't get it ! Although the film was lovely it left me unsatisyed and wondering 'what did it all mean ?
its life..I mean, google unit 731..probably the most horrific thing to happen..nothing happened to those guys..its this life affirming, nietzschean view..amor fati
@fjdmusicman This is Bresson's most nihilistic work. It is my opinion that the films "Diary of a Country Priest", "Au Hasard Balthazar" & "L'argent " can be viewed as a trilogy in reference to Bresson's struggles with faith. In the former Bresson presents the bleak life of one priest in particular who is dealt unfair circumstances but remains faithful. In Balthazar nihilism paves the way to the denouncement of faith and eventual atheism in the latter films complete detachment from humanity.
Great movie and a poignant end - the director creates greater communication with the animal than any modern day cgi anthopormoprhic animation. The unsentimental finale is satisfying and moving
