I agree, all the Beyerdynamic headphones look "wonkie." I have a pair of DT 880 Pros myself, but compared to my AKG Q701 and Sennheiser HD 650, they look rather dated. I think my grandfather might think they were cool though. The Beyer headphones are very comfortable though. I'll give them that.
Using them with a cheap portable amp wont even give you 50% of their potential, they will a bit better than HD555's. You need a 500-600 $ amp with these to really open them up. And the difference is worth it. I've heard HD600's and HD650's with 1000 dollars amps and they sound like completely different headphones compared to those used with weak amps or without amps.
You really a need a 500$+ amplifier for these headphones to start shining. Using them with even the best portable amplifiers wont give you even 60% of their potential.
The reason why you dont hear difference between plugging them into mp3 player and into amp is because that amp is very weak.

I think that you may be able to tell a difference in the sound quality if you got a more expensive amp. At least $200+. Tube amps are said to be very good with the HD600.
I think I want to get the Sennheiser HD600 over the Beyerdynamics for college, just because I think over time (15+ years) , the Sennheisers will continue to fit AROUND my ears, where the Beyers, seem like they have a more circle shaped cup, where my ears might eventually grow out if them.... Because, if you didn't know, as you age, your earlobes continue to grow till you die.
HD-600's are great - I just replaced the worn out ear pads on mine (easy job), and the headband padding, plus upgraded the cord to the HD-650 as mine had a loose connection in one side. Now they are better than ever and comfortable for hours so I'm using them now :)
OT: p.s. re your Spokane USPSA vid - I see you tried a G20 (yours?) - I have one and placed 3rd in the 1st GSSF competition in my area. 10mm is def. a handicap due to recoil. You were pretty fast and very slick w/ mag changes.
@montimer44 HD600's are not bassy? Um, wrong. HD600's when properly amped have stronger bass than Beyedynamic Dt990, which are known as bass monsters. Also, HD650's are even more amp-hungry than HD600, and they sound extremely boring, dark, slow and simply bad with anything less than 500$ amp. Seriously, if you're planning to buy HD600 /650, know that you NEED proper source and proper amp. If you dont have that, just get HD558 or H598.
I have these headphones to game with CS,L4D, and they are excellent. The soundstage of it really helps the user know where enemies are coming from. And there's no shitty distortion from those piece of shit razer headphones which I have tried ($150) and they don't compare. They just sound much more natural and they are more versatile than gaming headsets because they don't suck ass when you listen to music. "you will need a decent amp. to make it work properly" ha-ha-ha. The guy who has written it, obviously has never tried this headphones. I have one and I can say, that there is no any need for an amp. With my laptop the volume is unbearable on 60%, so I use to have 30%. It's quite good with my blackberry (80% of max vol.) is fine.
The sound is just as good as the source you have, what an amp. do is just making it louder and if that is a really good one, maybe don't make the sound much worse.

@1981z28camaro Hi. I advise that you get the Sennheiser HD 595's instead of the HD 600's or even the HD 650's, because your source is too weak to power the HD 600 or higher series of headphones. Only buy a pair of HD 600's, or HD 650's if your going to spend the same sort of money on a decent headphone amplifier as well.
Generally, the Graham Slee series of headphone amplifiers is considered the most suitable pair for the HD 600 series of headphones.
@LiquidExtreme12 thank you, I think I am going to go with the 595's, I'm wondering if I should still get an amp tho, was thinking of the Little Dot MK III.
tell you what son, this would be one of the best reviews ive ever heard, you mention all the shit that matters and thats it. unbiased as well man good job.
Because the performance of the source (hence AMP only enchances crap signal) the overall performance is not so impressing. But I am very happy anyway as I bought these cans only for £70 including shipping and they sound like ~£200 HD600.;) I am now going to upgrade the source when I have money. I have found great some DACs and now I am waiting for more cash to come. Don't have much money at the moment. Then I will probably try to build my own AMP or just buy HD650. Not sure yet.
Hi I'm back! On my setup (onboard sound card -> Millett MiniMAX -> HD580 I can certainly hear the impact of the amplifier on the sound. It is not huge by any means - just a little bit clearer, more extended and brighter treble plus less muddyness in the bass. However, although the difference is audigible it is not day and night. The reason for it is probably the crap sound card. The difference between SR80i and HD580 is not huge as well so it's most likely sound card that is an issue.
Can I ask you what version of Titanium have you got? Is that the new Titanium HD? If so then dont be surprised that the cheap piece of crap for $100 (talking about your "AMP") cant drive your headphones better than the soundcard itself. New Titanium HD seems to have decent built-in headphone amplifier.:P
Well I am 100% sure you should hear at least slight improvement. It's the AMP that is the problem. Find some good used (or cheap) AMP that is recommended on forums and you should be fine. Membersof head-fi are generally educated people and if there was no difference at all they just would not buy AMPs. Many members of head-fi are engineering specialists and simply if the AMP do not improve the sound they would prove it and no one would use it anymore. We use it because it helps.;)
Hi! I have purchased used HD580. According to people opinions they sound identically to HD600 so I will see whether my AMP makes the difference or not. For now I don't have a 'proper' source and will run it from on-board realtek but hopefully will upgrade soon. Anyway - good amplification certainly should show some potential when paired with cans like this even with such a crap source. The AMP is Millett Hybrid MiniMAX and reportedly pairs very nicely with Senns I don't expect miracles though.
As for whether it's worht it or not - audio hobby is very expensive and many audiophiles will tell you it's not worth it. I'm a student so I know something about it as I can't afford the gear I would like to purchase. Also some people just don't hear the difference - then stay with equipment you have; good for you, you will save a lot of money. However, for many people the difference can be dramatical e.g. I can't even imagine buying HD600 for a source with no AMP at all. It would be horrible.:D
A very important thing is that headphones and AMPs don't produce sound. Your source (in this case sound card) is what creates sound and headphones and AMP only 'give' it to your ears. As for so cheap components paired with HD600 - it's not worth it to buy HD600 for it. HD600 like all high-end headphones reproduce what the source can give to them (and AMP is for powering drivers of headphones) hence people pair it even with sources and AMPs times more expensive than HD600.
Anyway - it's a matter of science. Inefficient headphones need more voltage/current and therefore their drivers move more/differently when proper amount of current is supplied. If you and your friend could not hear the difference in using AMP and not using it then you re simply deaf. And BTW: audiophiles state that the actual difference BETWEEN DIFFERENT AMPs is small not that there is a small difference in using or not using AMP at all. Get your facts right.
well all i can say is i picked up every single tone on a hearing test i took about a month ago so my hearing is pretty darn good, but it just seems like with the high end audio equipment, amp-dac stuff that the results obtained do not justify the amount of money required to have them.
@FieldBoy111 first of all - you expect night and they differences. You will NOT get them. Whether you add an AMP or change a source you will not change the general character of the headphones. Audiophiles listen to headphones looking at it from more critical point of view. They rate soundstage, bass quality (not quantity), extension on both ends of response spectrum. You say you listened to every single note - I say you didn't. You compared the music headphones play not the stage they create.
at least for me anyways. at the time i didnt mind spending an extra couple hundred bucks on some headphones that sounded a bit different and open than those hd555's but for me it just seemed goofy to then spend another $300-500 on an amp for them.
@FieldBoy111 what's your source? An AMP for headphones of this class is a MUST. You didn't hear no difference? Then what you bought is NOT an AMP but a piece of crap. What was exactly the "amplfier" you bought? There are some 'volume boosters' but they - unfortunately - do not provide more current apart from more voltage. They only make things louder no better. Again - whats the AMP and whats the source you use with it?
god i hate how you cant post links on youtube. The amp is a Vivid-tech v1, and the soundcard is a Soundblaster X-Fi Titanium. Both peices run about $100 each.
@FieldBoy111 As for the AMP - it's some noname. Just like with PC power supplies noname commercial AMPs are generally crap. Like I said it's going to be volume booster not AMP. It provides voltage but not enough current. It only degrades sound signal as it lies on signal path, if you know what I mean. For the sound card - Titanium is very overpriced and even very good sources at $100 are not good enough for these headphones. Get Xonar ST or Audinst Hud-mx1 from ebay and see how it improves SQ.;)
The other thing is that if you test the headphones with $100 amplifier... then don't expect anything else than volume boost. Good amplifier = expensive amplifier. Good amplifier for HD600 = very, very expensive amplifier. Plus as someone stated before you will not be able to hear any difference unless you have a good source. There is no point at all to buy an amplifier (and headphones like this) to play with some cheap sound card. Xonar ST is a very minimum option but I still suggest separateDAC
I have recently purchased a brand new AMP that I (for now) use with my SR80i. The soundstage opened up considerably, bass has more impact and there is more midrange as well. If you tell me that it's a placebo effect I'm just sorry for you. Yes... all audiophiles spend hundereds of dollars for their AMPs just to get a happy smile on their face created by placebo effect. The funny thing is that I would recognize unamped pair of SR80i in a minute and could tell you how it differs from the amped one
And the reviewer of this video agrees with me regarding headphone amps. So I am not alone. You just payed a bunch of money for a amp... YOUR GONNA HEAR THE DIFFERENCE....just don't expect your friends to.
by admission from audiophiles, headphone amps account for only a small change in quality. They view this small change as important. I view it as nothing. So I am not deaf. And I have HD580 not 600.
Asd the reviewer of this video agrees with me regarding headphone amps. So I am not alone. You just payed a bunch of money for a amp... YOUR GONNA HEAR THE DIFFERENCE....just don't expect your friends to.

I have double blind tested several headphone amps with"inefficient" 300 ohm headphones and I or the other person I was testing with was never able to tell the difference. So in my experience, they do not improve sound quality. And no its NOT a must.
its these false claims that make people go spend money on useless crap like headphone amps, yet my actual test disproves it.
And I am happy you get so excited and humored over headphone amps ...
If you don't hear any difference with a headphone amp then either your source sucks (crappy sound card with mp3 files or whatever) or youre deaf. I just bought a Schiit Asgard headphone amp and the difference is night and day on my HD600. It also improves more efficient 'phones like my HD555 and HD25-1 II
@crazycarl487 hahahahahahahahahaha. Oh my God. I have not seen such a funny statement since so many months. Thank you crazycarl487 - you made me very happy this day. Headphone AMPs DO improve sound quality but only with headphones that are less efficient and the source itself does not supply enough voltage/current. You therefore not going to improve on the sound of HD201 with an AMp but for HD600 AMP is a must otherwise it sounds worse than HD555...
@FieldBoy111 If you can't hear any difference when using AMP then it simply means you are deaf and you really do not need such an expensive pair of headphones. You would not see any difference between them and some lower-end phones just like you don't see difference between amped and unamped HD600. But I understand it's good to show off to friends who have no knowledge in hifi that you have great cans even though you don't get 50% of what they are capable to present by the sound quality.
Hey nice review, awesome phones I agree, what do you recommend for something more portable with a iPod for example cos I wouldn't take these out and about
could someone who is quite knowledgable in headphones please answer this! i need to know which is best for me bearing in mind that i need something with deep, punchy bass (i listen to a lot of rock, metal and drum and bass) : sennheiser hd 595, hd 600 or grado 125i. if there is any other type i shoulld look at like beyerdynamics. please tell me!

Dude thanks for the review I had the HD555 just sold them and now getting PXC 450 for travel and once I get the cashflow going im getting these or the 650s with some kind of amp.
do you know where I can buy a new cable? mine doesnt work anymore, I also thought it was the headphone first so I tried to open it but then the thing that is surrounded on the outside got flattened, or in other words, it isnt symmetric any longer.
They Are One Sexy Pair Of Cans, Personally I Will Only Use Sennheiser Myself Coz They Are Among The Best At The Price. They Also Make The Orpheous System That Retails @ £9,500 And Is Apparently The Finest Set In The World, But Having Said That I Firmly Believe Anyone That Spends That Amount Of Money On Headphones Needs A Reality Check
eh i listened to them at best buy one time uhh i think you'd probably be better off getting these ones cause yeah the two pairs of headphones are the same price but with the Beats your probably paying $100 for some chrome or whatnot and the fact that Dr. Dre's got his name on it.
@feAr636 all i have too say is Thank you for saying that man...i stress too people..if u really want too push them Add a AMP..*Sigh* oh well..I guess name recognition really pays off..
surely... your not an audiophile... for those that cannot discern quality listening, you should go ahead and waste your money on the monster beats studio...
i dont even understand why people are comparing those headphones to senns...
@CarlsonsRaiders I wouldn't buy anything from MOnster because all their stuff is overpriced like hdmi cables for 1000$ which are as good as 15$ hdmi cables
@Deathz0r94 higher quailty .. but you can't find even a good sennheiser headset in cheap price. I have HD415. and gamecom 367. gamecom 367's sound quailty was good than HD415. when I use this one for long time, my ears hurt. but gamecom 367 didn't. I know high price sennheiser headset is real good but there is no good headset in cheap price..
Getting it for my birthday. Thanks for the review a ton, man! Loved it.

@cosiegapisz49
i dont think its the new titanium HD, no.

@FieldBoy111
We use it because it helps.;)
cosiegapisz49 1 year ago
The AMP is Millett Hybrid MiniMAX and reportedly pairs very nicely with Senns I don't expect miracles though.
cosiegapisz49 1 year ago
As for whether it's worht it or not - audio hobby is very expensive and many audiophiles will tell you it's not worth it. I'm a student so I know something about it as I can't afford the gear I would like to purchase. Also some people just don't hear the difference - then stay with equipment you have; good for you, you will save a lot of money. However, for many people the difference can be dramatical e.g. I can't even imagine buying HD600 for a source with no AMP at all. It would be horrible.:D
cosiegapisz49 1 year ago
A very important thing is that headphones and AMPs don't produce sound. Your source (in this case sound card) is what creates sound and headphones and AMP only 'give' it to your ears. As for so cheap components paired with HD600 - it's not worth it to buy HD600 for it. HD600 like all high-end headphones reproduce what the source can give to them (and AMP is for powering drivers of headphones) hence people pair it even with sources and AMPs times more expensive than HD600.
cosiegapisz49 1 year ago
Anyway - it's a matter of science. Inefficient headphones need more voltage/current and therefore their drivers move more/differently when proper amount of current is supplied. If you and your friend could not hear the difference in using AMP and not using it then you re simply deaf. And BTW: audiophiles state that the actual difference BETWEEN DIFFERENT AMPs is small not that there is a small difference in using or not using AMP at all. Get your facts right.
cosiegapisz49 1 year ago
well all i can say is i picked up every single tone on a hearing test i took about a month ago so my hearing is pretty darn good, but it just seems like with the high end audio equipment, amp-dac stuff that the results obtained do not justify the amount of money required to have them.
FieldBoy111 1 year ago
@FieldBoy111 first of all - you expect night and they differences. You will NOT get them. Whether you add an AMP or change a source you will not change the general character of the headphones. Audiophiles listen to headphones looking at it from more critical point of view. They rate soundstage, bass quality (not quantity), extension on both ends of response spectrum. You say you listened to every single note - I say you didn't. You compared the music headphones play not the stage they create.
cosiegapisz49 1 year ago
@cosiegapisz49
at least for me anyways. at the time i didnt mind spending an extra couple hundred bucks on some headphones that sounded a bit different and open than those hd555's but for me it just seemed goofy to then spend another $300-500 on an amp for them.
FieldBoy111 1 year ago
@FieldBoy111 what's your source? An AMP for headphones of this class is a MUST. You didn't hear no difference? Then what you bought is NOT an AMP but a piece of crap. What was exactly the "amplfier" you bought? There are some 'volume boosters' but they - unfortunately - do not provide more current apart from more voltage. They only make things louder no better. Again - whats the AMP and whats the source you use with it?
cosiegapisz49 1 year ago
@cosiegapisz49
god i hate how you cant post links on youtube. The amp is a Vivid-tech v1, and the soundcard is a Soundblaster X-Fi Titanium. Both peices run about $100 each.
FieldBoy111 1 year ago
@FieldBoy111 As for the AMP - it's some noname. Just like with PC power supplies noname commercial AMPs are generally crap. Like I said it's going to be volume booster not AMP. It provides voltage but not enough current. It only degrades sound signal as it lies on signal path, if you know what I mean. For the sound card - Titanium is very overpriced and even very good sources at $100 are not good enough for these headphones. Get Xonar ST or Audinst Hud-mx1 from ebay and see how it improves SQ.;)
cosiegapisz49 1 year ago
The other thing is that if you test the headphones with $100 amplifier... then don't expect anything else than volume boost. Good amplifier = expensive amplifier. Good amplifier for HD600 = very, very expensive amplifier. Plus as someone stated before you will not be able to hear any difference unless you have a good source. There is no point at all to buy an amplifier (and headphones like this) to play with some cheap sound card. Xonar ST is a very minimum option but I still suggest separateDAC

thanks

I have recently purchased a brand new AMP that I (for now) use with my SR80i. The soundstage opened up considerably, bass has more impact and there is more midrange as well. If you tell me that it's a placebo effect I'm just sorry for you. Yes... all audiophiles spend hundereds of dollars for their AMPs just to get a happy smile on their face created by placebo effect. The funny thing is that I would recognize unamped pair of SR80i in a minute and could tell you how it differs from the amped one
cosiegapisz49 1 year ago
And the reviewer of this video agrees with me regarding headphone amps. So I am not alone. You just payed a bunch of money for a amp... YOUR GONNA HEAR THE DIFFERENCE....just don't expect your friends to.
crazycarl487 1 year ago
by admission from audiophiles, headphone amps account for only a small change in quality. They view this small change as important. I view it as nothing. So I am not deaf. And I have HD580 not 600.

And I am happy you get so excited and humored over headphone amps ...
crazycarl487 1 year ago
@crazycarl487

Yes, finally someone who tells the truth. Headphone amps do not do anything other than make it louder. They do not make it sound better.
crazycarl487 1 year ago
@crazycarl487 hahahahahahahahahaha. Oh my God. I have not seen such a funny statement since so many months. Thank you crazycarl487 - you made me very happy this day. Headphone AMPs DO improve sound quality but only with headphones that are less efficient and the source itself does not supply enough voltage/current. You therefore not going to improve on the sound of HD201 with an AMp but for HD600 AMP is a must otherwise it sounds worse than HD555...
cosiegapisz49 1 year ago
@cosiegapisz49
your obviously a conspirator sent onto youtube to coax people into buying headphone amps
FieldBoy111 1 year ago
@FieldBoy111 If you can't hear any difference when using AMP then it simply means you are deaf and you really do not need such an expensive pair of headphones. You would not see any difference between them and some lower-end phones just like you don't see difference between amped and unamped HD600. But I understand it's good to show off to friends who have no knowledge in hifi that you have great cans even though you don't get 50% of what they are capable to present by the sound quality.

Is the Monster Beats Studios better than these? Because my friend told me the Sennheiser HD600 is better than Monster Beats Studio by Dr. Dre
CarlsonsRaiders 1 year ago
eh i listened to them at best buy one time uhh i think you'd probably be better off getting these ones cause yeah the two pairs of headphones are the same price but with the Beats your probably paying $100 for some chrome or whatnot and the fact that Dr. Dre's got his name on it.
