People can say what say want about Muller. But he was the most lethal striker of ALL times. No one else. If you want entertainment you need Henry, Ronaldinho or Etoo.
If you need a goal you need Muller.
As I said, most deadly man in modern football. Awesome killerinstinct.
It is silly to compare a striker with an offensive midfielder. If you look at 100 years of football and have to pick one player to wear *the* jersey with the "9" on the back, it will be no one else than Gerd Müller who will wear it.
Don't compare Gerd Müller with Maradonna, that's ridiculous. I saw Müller very often in Munich. He was by far not as brilliant as Beckenbauer or Pele, but he was absolutely unique in his way of making goals.Very often with his back to the goal, in the middle of the crowd, he managed to get that ball into the goal and nobody understood how he did that. Too bad, he had to suffer a lot of misfortune in his life.
dear novatrek, that was about Muller, who was a very, very special type of player.
Maradona was brilliant, of course!
My posting was related to someone, who tried to compare Muller with Maradona.
After many private and financial problems,
Muller is now coaching young players at Bayern Muenchen. Bayern's management (Rummenige, Hoeness and Beckenbauer) support their veterans in a very social manner.
Beckenbauer is awesome - he can play any opponent like a grand master violinist plays a violin..and will use his team mates to totally dismantle the strategy of the opposing coach! So he ranks one...but Muller is close behind him...and will use Beckenbauers orchestration to totally hit teams with goals until they die..even if the service is wanting...HAT OFF TO THE BOMBER! I just laugh at modern day players because they are a joke...they forget that they must jeet kune do their football!
Maradona did neither!..hahaha i can't believe how being you english can say about that..did you saw the 86' WC?. This is football, it's not just about numbers (the assists of maradona don't appear in statics for example). Why do you think that many many people in the hole world say that he was the best player ever?. Maradona was just magic, magical. I reccomend you to see this video: "maradona el pibe oro" from: ADE753. C ya!
Maradona is a superb player, no question! But when you compare Maradona to the all time greats of Pele's era, Diego falls short. Did you see the 1970 World Cup? I'm talking about irrefutable references to Maradona's achievements through out his career. Are you aware that Diego could not crack or dominate Europe? He was dominated, dismantled and demolished by many of his peers both at club level and in elite competitions he just could not dominate in Europe.
luchobalatti - Diego's assists? Do you want me to show you superior metrics from other players such a Platini, Rossi, Gullit, Van Basten that out rank Maradona's?
Do you want me to compare Diego to Pele's metrics as well as highly scientific procedures Pele introduced to the game that is off the record books?
Yes, Diego was magical at times, but players like Pele and Muller have nearly fautless footballing standards compared to Diego...no question.
luchobolatti - Last but not least...Gerd Muller owns the No9 shirt, no one expect for Puskas surpasses Muller as the world's best centre forward...no one. The supreme utility player and the greatest all round player as an attacking midfielder is Pele with Di Stefano coming second. In defence, we have Beckenbauer and his No2 Bobby Moore. And in goal we have Banks and Yashin. These are the basic spine of the greatest players of all time. Diego gets on the subsbench at best!
ive only recentley found out about him, his record is incredible. people talk about best and maradona, but he achieved everything. 68 goals in 62 games for germany wining the world cup and euro championships and 3 european cups with bayern!! surely makes him one of the best 5 players ever.
lxd1 - My friend...forget Maradona - he doesn't even make my number 12 for my greatest of all time. Muller is the greatest out and out striker of all time bar none. Second to Puskas! Check out Puskas' and Cruff's goal scroing hits...back to Maradona:
World Cup Wins (25%) 1 of 4 attempts
Strike Rate - Argentina 37% 34/91
Just one UEFA Cup (third tier trophy at the time) - Maradona couldn't conquer Europe...his peers did...Gullit, Van Basten, Papan...Pele surpasses them all!
Granted, Maradona is a superb football player, a master at that...but he does not transcend football...Diego had huge difficulties cracking Europe, he was both OWNED and demolished in World football by the likes of Gullit/Van Basten...Rossi/Platini. Morover, where it counts, he failed to compete in Europe's elite tournaments successfully!
Maradona does not rank as the greatest achiever in World Football...not by a long shot! He is not the greatest hit man of all time, not the greatest midfielder of all time, not the greatest defender or even wing player...Diego falls short of the greats by a long margin!
i hate repeatin myself. you know nothing about football. saying he was not the greatest player of all makes you a fool. period stop the discussion. its senseless as shit.
a question for the germans: who is considerated (IN your country) the best german player of history for the most of germans? thanks, i'm argentinian and i'm doing a kind of poll. respect muller! a beast!
You have to say names like : Beckenbauer,Müller,Breitner,Matthäus,Walter,Seeler,Maier,Klinsmann,Kahn ,Sammer or Kohler, but I'm sure you cant say who is THE BEST... ;)
Best striker ever on this planet. Far away from second best striker, who I think is Marco Van Basten, although I hate the Duches. But he was great too, but nowhere near Muller.
the best striker of all times!better than pele or someone else!you have to see that mueller played on the highest level possible and scored more than 600 goals!ok pele scored 1000 goals but you cant compare that,he played in brazil thats not the same like europe for this time!
Ladies and gentlemen, with you the German Bomber, a genius, the great, the depredator gerd Mueller Der Bomber.....my respects to him whom I consider among the best ever, fearless striker, head striker per excellence!!...
Señoras y señores, con ustedes el Bombardero de Alemania, el genial, el enorme, el depredador de los arcos Gerd Mueller ¨der bomber´.....mis respetos a ese gran jugador, temible goleador, cabezeador por excelencia....
thats true...its a shame that him was recalled wrongfully for offside a regulare goal in worldcup final 1974..that has cost him a bit more fame...same is happend 1976 in the europeanchampionscup final against st. eitienne ..another wrongful offside call of a regulare goal in minute 2 of the game....
Greatest finisher of all time. How did he do it? He was short, heavy, stocky...but on a short burst vey fast, brave, relentless, watchful, skilful. All forwards should follow his example...follow the ball, watch the keeper, use your head and SCORE!!!!
what a finisher mueller was. he may not have been the tallest, or the fastest, or the most flamboyant, but he definitely put the ball in the net. low center of gravity and instinct to score. and that is what counts. look at the statistics. priceless.
None of the great players of the 60s and 70s would stand a chance nowadays. As regards Mueller, he fell from grace with Bayern Munich in the late 70s. He was good at scoring goals, but even at his heyday, there were many better German players than him.
not really, since back then defenders got away with much more than they do nowadays. Yellow cards were seldom, reds extremely rare. Also, the only German player better than him during his heyday was Beckenbauer.
you can´t compare players from different eras like that! if müller played today he would be able to take advantage of all the modern training methods as well. fact is: no other forward dominated his opponents the way müller did. he scored more goals than anybody else period!
Best finisher this planet has ever seen and also a great teamplayer, just lock at his "assists stats"...just as unbelievable...but most of all a great bloke who loves football and life. I know....I've been so lucky and met him twice at the Olympic Stadium in Munich. Prost Gerd!!!
deadly efficient but not the best overall for me, i will not argue with histerical fans but i prefer some players with mixed values of amazing style, creative gameplay etc. like henry or ronaldo da lima (not the manU pussy)
His talent was to be in the right position in the right time. And that's how to score goals.
And you english islandmonkeys are just jealous that you don't have such players...no...you have...what's the name of the footbaal-fagget? Beckham, isn't it?
The Bomber also scored 66 goals in 74 european cup games against top opposition you fuckwits. He is about 1 per game or better at every level he has played you pome wannabes. You idiots are just lucky he didn't play in the 66 final.
those morons, ey..? how can they live with themselves, not knowing stuff like that... well at least they are able to speak one foreign language beside their own,
damn those germans, always using german acronyms. how could they be so stupid? why dont they all just speak OUR language, right? how inconsiderate of them.
hey i just looked at moffi12345's profile...he is german! lol my bad, i thought he was some american prick criticising a german guy for using his own language. ignore previous comment
If you score around 1200 goals in your professional career, not all of them are going to be beautiful, but all of them count and that's all that matters you moron.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
top strikers rank of all times made by british specialists: 1. Pele (Brazylia) 2. Ronaldo (Brazylia) 3. Romario (Brazylia) 4. Luis Figo (Portugalia) 5. Zinedine Zidane (Francja) 6. Diego Maradona (Argentyna) 7. Lothar Matthaeus (Niemcy) 8. G e r d M u e l l e r (Niemcy) 9. Franz Beckenbauer (Niemcy) 10. Cafu (Brazylia)
This shows you know nothing about Football you say strikers but Franz Beckenbauer has never scored enough goals to keep 1 place behind gerd müller althought Beckenbauer is a legendnd the other thing is non of the other players has been such a good striker, the might all have been good players thougt
actually it was posted as joke, isnt it funny? i found it somewhere on the net, seriously. Btw I think that muller was deadly efficient but overall not the best for me, i have my own favourites but i will not argue with histeric fans cause it has no sense :)
Gerd Müller certanly was a great football player, he was a goal machine, but you must know, that in times he played the football was about "Give more goals then you opponent" and now the football is about "get less goal then your opponent".In his time it was much easier to score a goal, the defense wasn't so solid, and players weren't so well prepared, I think he is in 3 best strikers ever on world.
In Müller'S age, rigid man-marking was the rule. He regularly was marked by two guys. I wouldn't say it was that much easier scoring in his age compared to the no-man-marking era of today.
A lot of people might mistake Müller for that kind of typical german striker, like Bierhoff and Klinsmann. Strong in the air and goal instict, but low technique. That was not the case. Müller was quick, had a flawless touch of the ball, good dribbling skills, and lots of play intelligence, which made him a great goal assistant. Like in his 1.year for Ft.Lauderdale, where he scored 19 goals but also gave 17 goal assists.
Maybe you don't know how the real football works, but in football you use your foot to direct the ball into the net for a goal, and at this, Gerd Mueller was the supremo of all times. Some of us, such as myself, being a FC Bayern Muenchen fan, admire him more, because of what he did for our club.
müller isnt the best player ever but maybe the best striker ever and the videos obviously only shows gerd müllers wc goals..you didnt knew it??.goals and assists are not mathematic, goals are bread and butter for a striker and the goals are real, scored in games...there dont excist awards for step overs , hocus pokus, fancy tricks or what ever..but awards for the best goalscorers..
style is for homos like c ronaldo who whine and lay on the pitch...and Rhonaldinio who can only socre on free kicks...and won't even go after the ball
germany led the WC 06 with goals...( and lost to a boring defensive team-which happen to win the cup) and we didn't need to be fancy...ask Brazil and Portugal where fancy got them?? emilinated!
müllers o has 5 assists in only 13 wc games too..ronaldinho 2 goals and only 4 assists in 11 wc games..ronaldo only 4 assist in 19 games , henry 0 assists in 15 games..müller was wrongfully recalled a perfect volleygoal in wc final 1974, he still scored the gamewinner with a turningshot..both goals not worster than ronaldos 2002 goals against germany..henry and zico never did score a goal in a wc final..
you talk about some period, WC, count comparisions are not all, football is not mathematics. If he is so bloody best footballer check out what fans made for him and what for the stars we are talking about here.
for me buller is not best football player, most goals- ok. Refering to becks- he has fans cause he is great in his speciality, as muller in scoring, i was opponent to those who said that he is football god and crap things like that, i agree that he as amazing instinct
68 goals in 62 internationals and you think it's crap to call him a football god ? LOL You're a clown, he's the best striker the world has ever seen. Those statistics don't lie.
this video shows all müller goals he did score in worldcups..14 goals in 13 games...henry in 15 wc games only 6 goals and zero assists..ronaldo in 19 wc games 15 goals and only 4 assists....henrys wc goals and many ronaldo wc goals are not better than müllers..
maybe i am wrong but i beliee that people would like to watch one fantastic ronaldos dribble run with perfect shot than 10 penalties or 1 meter goals like that, sucha bore
Its all about effectiveness for a striker. 365 Goals in 427 Games for Bayern München! And the comparison with Ronaldo is, sorry, just silly. You are talking of two complete different Football Ages. But thats not only your fault, its a popular mistake if you read some of the comments here
Maybe you`re right. For a video-compilation the dribblings of Cristiano Ronaldo are much more attractive! But in a real match or a tournament everybody would love to have a Gerd Müller in the team! Someone who scores the important goals!
search for ronaldo, pele, zico, henry - this is beauty of football and you fundamental Mullerists, who know the football best on the planet, you know that beauty of football is beyond that what we see here.
1.Gerd Müller 2.Gerd Müller 3.Gerd Müller 4.Gerd Müller 5.Gerd Müller 6.Gerd Müller 7.Gerd Müller 8.Gerd Müller 9.Ronaldinho 10.Franz Beckebauer If you have any football knowledge- that's the real top ten!
i dont doubt hes a great goalscorer...but i prefer quality over quantity...look at this video...all the goals are ugly or created by somebody else...no crazy shots...no one on on dribble move....no chips...no free kicks...no offense or anything...
xxcongee- mueller did all that a striker can ever be expected to do: he scored goals, in TONS!!!! as an englishman, my team suffered at his hands (or feet) as much as any- leon, mexico: wembley, london, but i can say truthfully, he was the best there ever was at putting the ball into the net. 68 goals in 62 games for his country- there is nothing more that can, or needs to be said!!
Müllers goals were never beautiful. But fascinating. The quickness of reaction, his instinct... Whatever made him score 68 goals in 62 caps for the national team. by the way, when he was younger he actually had good dribbling skills.
And just for the record so you dont start talking crap like "There was a much higher general goals per game ratio during his carrer". That's wrong too. 2,7 goals per game in the WC 1974, the same ammount of goals in USA 94 and France 98.
And Bayerns goalcount in a typical winning season was around 70-80 when Muller played there. Compare that to today and you wont see that much a difference.
Einverstanden! Der Bomber ist, war und blieb der groesste Torjaeger fuer Deutschland und auch FC Bayern!! He would still score against these defenses, especially the more offense-oriented defenders!
Seriously that olly2810zidane what a shithead...zidan here zidan there, i bet you jerk off everytime in fron of his picture. Gerd mueller is the best striker ever and everyone who has a clue about football knows that!!!
in wcq 1970 müller did score goals in all 6 games(9 goals)he continued his goalscoring streak in his first 5 wc games and has assistet the 1:0 gamewinner for the third place match too...11 game goalstreak and 12 game pointstreak in total 12 games for wcq/wc 1970 is amazing..in 8 of this 12 games he did score the gamewinners for his team..
1969 bayern won the double inclusive the first german championship since 37 years..müller scored 50% of his teams goals in 30 games..in 5 cup games he did score 7 of his teams total 8 goals winning the cup and has assistet the single goal he didnt score too ....
Maggo309, right on. Except I think Muller today would be worth 250 million Euros, and Chelsea would try to buy him for $1 Billion and then end up ruining his game(cough cough Shevchenko). haha j/k. But seriously, the guy was the best finisher in the game ever. I haven't seen anybody finish goals like him in the modern game today. Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Zidane all have more skills, but Muller had a nose for goal like no other. He was like a sniper who killed off the opposition.
Considering the fact that he was the greatest striker of all time, no. He is not a "load of crap". Furthermore, the fact that there are other great footballers simply does not mean that he isn't one...
Muller had no real competition back then. He was outstanding. He was no soccer artist - no Zidane or Ronaldinho but had an incredible sense for where to be at the right time. And most important - he never dissapointed. Muller was a good player because he loved the game.
Ronaldinho is a good player because he gets paid well.
You moron - soccer in the 70's was completely different - worldwide. The game was slower, always one on one, kick and rush. Those with big muscels were defense, those who were fast were offense.
thats not true, you cant say guys like Maradona played a slow football.I think there was a bigger technical difference between the players than today. Nowadays the possibilities in training players have improved.
Second, most teams didnt play kick n rush, thats english football, great players like Netzer, Beckenbauer, Maradona, Cruyff played impressing and fast without kick n rush, Third name some Muscular Defenders, Vogts, Beckenbauer, Passarella and others were not very Muscular. And last but not least Müller wasnt very fast and he was offense
look at the guys teeth! wot a freak! n look at his perm as well, what a bender! he wasnt that good anyway, definitely not even close 2 being the best player ever.
the best player ever was ZIDANE, my hairy german friends
Müller was a pure Striker, Zidane was far far away from scoring as much as Müller( once he made 40 Goals in a Saison(only 34 games!!)). Zidane was a Midfielder, a great one but not as good as Platini, Beckenbauer, or Maradona my hairless french friend
bro u dont know nothing.zidane is like the michael jordan of football.i have heard beckenbauer personally praise zidane and hand him fifa best player.he has achieved way more than any1 in football, many people rate him higher than maradona and pele.platini didnt win no wc for france.who scored 3 goals in the world cup final? zidane. equalling peles record.type in amazing skill compilation. type in best tricks 2
what a striker....

what a finisher mueller was. he may not have been the tallest, or the fastest, or the most flamboyant, but he definitely put the ball in the net. low center of gravity and instinct to score. and that is what counts. look at the statistics. priceless.

Football has changed considerably since then.
None of the great players of the 60s and 70s would stand a chance nowadays. As regards Mueller, he fell from grace with Bayern Munich in the late 70s. He was good at scoring goals, but even at his heyday, there were many better German players than him.
SassieSaskia 4 years ago
not really, since back then defenders got away with much more than they do nowadays. Yellow cards were seldom, reds extremely rare. Also, the only German player better than him during his heyday was Beckenbauer.
roozbehazadi 4 years ago 2
you can´t compare players from different eras like that! if müller played today he would be able to take advantage of all the modern training methods as well. fact is: no other forward dominated his opponents the way müller did. he scored more goals than anybody else period!

Gerd Müller scored 68 goals ins 62 games for germany, sandor kocsis is the only player with a better scoring rate.
Gerd Müller scored 14 goals in 2 worldchampionships. Ronaldo now has more goals than him, but it took him 4 worldchampionships to beat Müller.
Müller may not have scored most goals ever, but his goals per game ratio is unbelievable.

So isses!

My Hero! 68 goals in 62 games for West Germany. A goal Machine and an icon in world football.. Prost Gerd!!!!
MartiW 4 years ago
Gerd Müller certanly was a great football player, he was a goal machine, but you must know, that in times he played the football was about "Give more goals then you opponent" and now the football is about "get less goal then your opponent".In his time it was much easier to score a goal, the defense wasn't so solid, and players weren't so well prepared, I think he is in 3 best strikers ever on world.
ocubinho 4 years ago
In Müller'S age, rigid man-marking was the rule. He regularly was marked by two guys. I wouldn't say it was that much easier scoring in his age compared to the no-man-marking era of today.
Gregoriak 4 years ago

Its all about effectiveness for a striker. 365 Goals in 427 Games for Bayern München! And the comparison with Ronaldo is, sorry, just silly. You are talking of two complete different Football Ages. But thats not only your fault, its a popular mistake if you read some of the comments here

xxcongee- mueller did all that a striker can ever be expected to do: he scored goals, in TONS!!!! as an englishman, my team suffered at his hands (or feet) as much as any- leon, mexico: wembley, london, but i can say truthfully, he was the best there ever was at putting the ball into the net. 68 goals in 62 games for his country- there is nothing more that can, or needs to be said!!
moodyb2 4 years ago 2
Müllers goals were never beautiful. But fascinating. The quickness of reaction, his instinct... Whatever made him score 68 goals in 62 caps for the national team. by the way, when he was younger he actually had good dribbling skills.
Pimpelhuber 4 years ago 3
The greatest striker ever!!!
ArhYme 4 years ago
And just for the record so you dont start talking crap like "There was a much higher general goals per game ratio during his carrer". That's wrong too. 2,7 goals per game in the WC 1974, the same ammount of goals in USA 94 and France 98.
And Bayerns goalcount in a typical winning season was around 70-80 when Muller played there. Compare that to today and you wont see that much a difference.

Muller had no real competition back then. He was outstanding. He was no soccer artist - no Zidane or Ronaldinho but had an incredible sense for where to be at the right time. And most important - he never dissapointed. Muller was a good player because he loved the game.
Ronaldinho is a good player because he gets paid well.
cromagnondude 4 years ago
You moron - soccer in the 70's was completely different - worldwide. The game was slower, always one on one, kick and rush. Those with big muscels were defense, those who were fast were offense.
