Looking Good has left, but Kiki Beauty Supply is just down the street. Walgreens has been open for a while and there is a new store that opened just this year (2011) on Washington St. called Dudley Dept Store. It is like a mini-Robells, for those of you who remember, and it is not far from where Robells used to be. WalMart was interested in opening a smaller store in the area, but I think that's pretty much a dead issue now. I can see them undercutting the small shops here. Who needs them?
I have had a barber I go to in Dudley Square for over 20 years (although I've moved to the suburbs). We talk about this issue, and we are both concerned about it. The Walgreens DID move in, but most of it is Mom and Pop, and that's the way the community likes it. They have really tried to push gentrification into Dudley and Roxbury in general, but it won't happen. The people don't want it to.

The little ma n pa shops are the best in my book...like Ugi's is the bestt for Steak and cheese subs!!!
