I think he went by Seotoro in Indonesia, but according to U.S. records he was still Obama. Then when he returned to the U.S. he just went by Obama and never mentioned his adoption. But of course I can't be sure of this because all his personal and scholastic records are sealed.

Soetoro is the last name of his stepdad and he really had no control over its use.
