gestaltism is all about experimentalism! here and now. one cannot do this from a book. therefore, videos like these are ESSENTIAL! you cannot study gestaltism or counselling w/out these types of video. well done. also, there are 10 viewers that cannot deal with the present. maybe one or more of your videos were disliked before!!!
Me and my buddies were about to perform a Role-play About Gestalt Therapy.. and This video is like a heaven-blessing to us! THANK YOU VERY MUCH to all of the person created this video :D
im very new to gestalt therapy and i find it really interesting but from the clients perspective im still finding it an awqward situation? You know hugging your imaginary mum etc. I think many people will find that really far out
fantastic...patient context now outdated but back then thats what people were for such therapies.....clients today are more able to have the control with the more professionals learn and endeavour to experiment with!! great insight to the actual therapy ive been doing for 6 years with a great success.
thanks so much for posting this video - i'm doing a gestalt module on a postgrad course this week and it really helped me to imagine what this approach could look like in practice.
I'd have more confidence in what Perls has to say . . . if he didn't feel obliged to label what he does as "therapy" and the people he does it with as "patients".
That would be a LOT more consisent with his otherwise non-authoritarian sensibility.
I thought this was a great video to watch, I found it really helpful for my counselling studies. I am giving a presentation on Gestalt tonight which will be much easier to do now, thanks!!
stanko66666666 by pointing out other peoples ego your letting your own ego overtake you and control you, dont take that the wrong way just take it into account
Gestalt was very intense for me. My experience 30 years ago, was that it helped me get in touch with "disowned"" feelings of rage for my parents in a safe environment. The empty chair technique is very powerful and I use it frequently with my clients.
it's funny how humans need training on how to have meaningful conversations with each other. Live in the moment....such a basic premise, so simple. Can we resolve the past by ignoring it, though? Being aware of the moment doesn't make us comfortable with being in the moment, analysis of how we are right now can be conditioned only momentarily. How is Gestalt therapeutic when the session is over?
It's funny how as human beings we need to be trained to have meaningful conversations with each other! Live in the moment...such a basic premise....gestalt is using linguistic tricks to bring the patient into the 'now' - but analysis of the 'now' to the nth degree could make the patient so self-concious it could trigger stress?
@stanko66666666 If we had an answer there would be no debate, that would be fine, if we dont have an answer and we do not debate, that would be disastrous. Some of the people who made/watch this video are future social science researchers; time is not wasted on education. Don't be ignorant!
Great video. Very informative. It puts into perspective the empty chair technique. I never realised how a therapist would go about using the technique in a counselling session - I guessed originally that the technique was used as some kind of cathartic technique which I didn't fully accept or understand due to the technique of transference. So thank you, sincerely, for illuminating the context of the technique as a way of dealing with unresolved past issues in the present 'here and now'.
Great video. I think for me, I prefer PCT. This seems a bit too intense, as if someone is noticing all my movements. I prefer to have a bit more space and freedom to say what I want in my own time. I guess it's just lack of self-confidence really as I'd feel silly acting out the talking to parents type thing!
yup... gestalt therapy is a bit too intense. it is not recommended to those who have problems with emotions. better do client centered (carl rogers) techniques first, then only the therapist will guide u to do other (gestalt, REBT, etc) suitable techniques. besides.. it is also not recommended to do empty chair during the first session, where the client still having a lot of resistance with the therapist.
Indeed, good video. I do have a problem with the setup of the experiment (adressing his feelings to his parents + the hug). The experiment seems very artificial and not based on real awareness and not the least on mobilisation of energy. Fot those who were allready convinced: gestalttherapy is even better in reality!
although the video displays the techniques used in geltalt, its so scripted. as if gestalt therapy is easy to do. can someone upload an unscripted session other than the one with perls?
I have gone much further since September 2008 when I started to work with a Gestalt Therapist, then I have in 5 years of CBT Therapy. The want and need to know the "why's" of my ED, has always been really important to me. Along with NOT seperating myself from my feelings. Gestalt has really helped...so far! I HIGHLY recommend it.
LOL! I was thinking the same thing! I was suddenly reminded of that scene from Good Will Hunting where Robin Williams tells him "It's not your fault" until he reaches a catharsis

What's the point of comparing different psychotherapist approach?
It sounds to me like a typical child argument: "My superhero is stronger than yours..."
Come on people, get rid of your ego.

Can you get honest answers from a 'deluded
mind'. Most people think they have an explanation for their behavior, but very often
it is an answer, that prevents them from
facing a 'truth'that they're unable to cope
with.
Living in the past & future & ignoring the
present is the process of the 'egoistic driven mind'.Meditation is an excellent method of returning to the here & now &
also examining your delusions.Delusions of
a life time are built on multi illusion &
take time to correct.
