Tragic! A sad day for our town. It should never have been sold to that developer in the first place. To think we once had two piers (like Brighton) now we have none :(
What bullshit- it may have been crumbly and decrepit but it still had majesty. I actually feel kind of emotional. It takes a bit of effort to get a fire going in a place like that- I wonder if they were paid? Also, on the BBC it says there were reports of explosions- someone wanted this to happen. Either way, it's a sad day.
That is a real shame. We used to play bingo on the pier back in the 80s when there were lots of local characters around. There was a hlf-decent bar on the pier as well; it was just a great place to mooch around. I'm going to miss it. Let's build another one!
Apparently just heard from a friend .... two people have just been arrested .... my guess is it was just some stupid brats ... -_- bloody numptys ... fancy doing a thing like that? >.> pffft!
Just been down there- it's still burning but it's pretty much the whole length. Firefighters look like they're just trying to stop it spread to the prom. Don't think they're going to put it out. I hear the police have made some arrests. I wonder who did it? Kids, or an insurance job? What d'you reckon?
this was a very sad time, I was sat along the seafront with my gfriend at 1am when we see flames coming from the ballroom so phoned the firebrigade/ police and then i chased down one of the yobs that set fire to the pier and made a citizens arrest and handing him over to the police and then had to sit an watch the historic pier burn :-(
@whatthehellname1 Well done to you for catching him! There are two of them in custody on suspicion of arson. Just spent the night watching it from the White Rock Hotel. Devastating for the town and for the pier trust (I've been involved since 2006). But there could still be hope...
@whatthehellname1 Well done to you for catching them! How did you know it was them that had set fire to it? Any idea how it happened/what they did? It's such a sad loss. I was in town earlier today and still smell like a bonfire!
So sad, that pier is a big part of my hometown. I've since moved to America but I always daydreamed about bringing people over to my hometown and showing them around :-( Is it weird to be so sad about pier?
:O oh my god .... since i've been away the whole place starts falling apart! i cant believe this! someone told about this on facebook ... didnt think it was true .... its to bad ... :(
With a bit of luck, the crashing, the banging and the wolloping is the cops beating the shit out of the arsonists.
