Put it this way if you ask a New Zealander where is the best place to live in NZ that has nice people & is quiet they will not be quick to name Whakatanae, there is safer & more scenic places to choose from. Some examples are; Coromandel area, Akaroa (in the South Island, it's near Christchurch city too), Kaikoura, Nelson area & maybe even Queenstown. Did you visit Queenstown? It has a few drawbacks such as it's not next to the ocean & it get cold in winter but apart from that it's amazing place

I saw Christchurch, I remained two days, I saw Picton, I lived in Waikanae with friends, I saw Wellington, I travelled to Whakatane, saw the area around it.

I loved Whakatane as most.

I'll come again, maybe in 2012, and I want to see other places, of course.

My dream would be to live in NZ but no money, and a family here! ;-) So I'll do another holiday, longer next time.

@donamarra bro dont listen to that steve guy. i lived in whakatane for 11 years as a south african and spent half of my child hood there. i live in hamilton now and honestly people are far more respectful, friendly and always keen to lend a hand when in need in whakatane than in anywhere in the waikato area. people are just up them selfs and fake up here. sure theres some people that bring the town down a bit but trust me its a very small handfull of them compared to any other town of this size
