my brother Eddie's favorite JB song....... everytime I hear this song, there goes my memories of James Brown playing on my Dad's old RCA Victor. I miss those days, and my brother!
"Smash released his 1964 hit "Out of Sight", which reached #24 on the pop charts and pointed the way to his later funk hits. Its release also triggered a legal battle between Smash and King that resulted in a one year ban on the release of Brown's vocal recordings."
James Brown was on King Records, or their subsidiaries (Mercury, Federal), from 1956 to 1971, except for a brief period in 1964-1965 where he released records on the Smash label, for which King sued him for breach of contract...
@IkeDyson71: You slipped a bit...Smash was a division of Mercury Records (JB signed a developmental deal with Smash to place his productions of artists connected with him...problem was that in a snit with King Records boss Syd Nathan, he began releasing stuff on Smash himself triggering the legal action; the LPs and singles he cut during that period were pulled from distribution only to be reissued by Smash/Mercury in 1968, about the time of the Bethlehem/Del Felece Trio period).
@IkeDyson71 Mercury was not a King subsidiary label. King was based in Cincinnati, Ohio. Mercury was based in Chicago. Smash was a susidiary of Mercury.
idontuseyewtube I think the point that people are making is that Fergie wasn't the originator, I don't think it matters who she riped it from. lol here it is going on 2011 and people are still talking about James Brown, I think it's safe to say that in a few more years people won't even remember Fergie much less her music seems like your trying to compare a legend to a regular joe or jane for that matter
@u2bdetox Fergie didn't rip this off, they sampled it out of another song that sampled this, see Afro-Rican "Give It All You Got", the song is so fucking unoriginal that is made up ENTIRELY of someone else's samples.
Hi I have JB on king as well (check out Hey America which I have just managed to upload.) Also there is Honky tonk by james brown as well on parlophone on my site. Thanks for comments enjoy ..
@tedztunes: In 1967, King licensed the international rights to JB's recordings to Polydor (where he eventually signed to in 1971 after King Records' new owners sold off his contract and back catalog
@Neptunesque JB never owned King Records, but he had lots of legal battles with them when they owned his contract and he kept recording stuff elsewhere (see Wikipedia under King Records (US))

you're right. I was mistaken.
Now, what was the name of the other King subsidiary, apart from Federal?
IkeDyson71 4 months ago
@IkeDyson71 There were two others: DE LUXE and BETHLEHEM.

My favorite version of this song, by far. Check the bass line -- you can hear *funk* being invented way back in the early Sixties!

One of the best versions of The Night Train. Sonny Liston worked out to this, although we all know what happened to him.

fergalicious lol.and i thought she made that part up.i guess nothing is original these days

Excellent song, my old man has this and honky tonk as well on 45 in his 1954 seeburg jukebox. This song gets played at every party

Odd how this generally forgotten version of a standard happens to be one of the very best of the R&R era.
Wow, Parlophone like the Beatles! I see this is a promo so I guess the label was usually different.
Here in the U.S., James Brown was distributed on the KING label that he owned.
Thanks for showing the disc, posting this great track and Happy New year.

@tedztunes A slight correction: James Brown did not own KING Records. That would be Syd Nathan. Just a little FYI.

You must be joking. King Records was owned by Syd Nathan.
