@IBABY1000 Exactly, you don't need to open up the xbox, but I reccomend getting a 4GB USB drive anything bigger than 4Gb won't work with FAT. The 4Gb is just for a bit of extra room seeing as since I've commented, the files may have been updated & be bigger.

I love people who say that opening the console isnt softmodding, because it is, softmodding means you change the software that was pre-installed and installing an unofficial software(dashboard), nowhere does it say that it doesnt require you to open your console, most consoles need opening to softmod-The xbox 360 for example Flashing the DVD drive to play backups IS changing the DVD drive software therefore is Softmodding, stop calling this guy a n00b and just do one, arseholes....

just softmodded my xbox without even opening it up and using an action replay. Its just to easy to do. I Made my own action replay using a psp cable and an xbox controller exstension lead. I stripped both wires and connected each colour to the same on the other cable taped it up and plug my psp in to my xbox. memory stick shows up as memory card on xbox formatted it, downloaded ndures softmod fro splinter cell used xplorer360 to copy the save files to my psp transferred the saves over to xbox

You don't need action replay even. Just have a modded Xbox controller with a USB Male end, plug in a memory card and install the drivers, use the action replay software found on the net to copy over splinter cell/mech assault exploit save, load it in ur Xbox and its modded!

then loaded up splinter cell and lo and behold started the linux save and softmodded my xbox in under half an hour. as i have previously chipped my xbox the hard way which in the end failed after a couple of months i decided to softmod as its cheaper and can be removed. BTW i have Dual boot mode my xbox to play on live if needs be but hey nothing like having a mini MAME/neo-geo system in the living room.
