Hmmm....this is the first time I've ever seen this video for the song. (Which I have imagined a zillion times.)
I must say that it's over the top--from what I'd imagined. I mean, I guess that I thought it was about trying to get the ((real)) idea of love between married people, but it seems to be more about disco music and shoddy nightclub liasons between village people. Heh. What do I know...?
I'm sorry to intercept any meaningful talk, but in my opinion U2's videos and songs are exactly the opposite of newcomers like "Pitbul" for instance, who try to destroy the look and feel of pure pop, although they could easily contribute to pop's ascending...
I am mexican. When I was 5 and this album had just been released, my mom came home from work one night with two presents for me: A walkman (remember those?), and a cassette: POP, by U2.
Fourteen years later I still remember putting my headphones on, playing the cassette and listening to this song, the opening track, and loving it. Even though I know this album was an experiment with pop music, almost in an ironic way, I find great songwriting in it. I love these guys.
HAHAHAHA this is the funniest, most random video I have ever watched!! I love how into Bono gets and how not into it Larry gets, they just crack me up! LOVE U2!
the drum n bass of this tune is soo freaking awesome. everything falls perfectly at 2:29 onwards..its like a bullet train that you don't want to stop..:-)
liked the song when I heard it on sirius. still like it. Edge da shit. Bono didnt have to keep stickin his bono in the camera though. Maybe the producer of the vid told him to. The fuck am I talkin bout Bono may have produced and directed it.
It's funny. Before even seeing this music video back in '99 (i think), I imagined the video to be the band playing in some heavily light-up room exactly like the one used in the music video. No joke...
The version on the 1990-2000 greatest hits album is the best version of this song. The GH version had an epic buildup at the beginning, and the original one felt like it started very early, but that doesn't mean the original is poor, its stll good. but the GH 1990-2000 version blew me away.
Fact is, U2 were a bigger band because they stuck to European UK influences instead of trying to do too much with American ones, no matter how fascinated they may have been with them.
REgardless of what influences they have, they have Bono's voice, Edge's guitar, both of their melodic sensibilities, and a slamming rhythm section with a perfect bass player and an inventive drummer. There's not a weak link in the bunch.
I admire U2 for doing what was basically an experiment with the 'Pop' album, and the irony-fuelled tour that followed. It was a massive departure, the first album without Eno/Lanois producing since 'War' in 1983 - 14 years earlier. The album was regarded by many fans and critics, and even by the band themselves later on,as not a very good album. The tour sort of worked in most places but flopped in America. I admire U2's courage to do it all though. Most big bands wouldn't have had the guts to try.
@SethHesio It was an extention of Achtung Baby/ZooTv, the 1991-1993 phase of the band, where they hid behind a mask as irony/cheesy behaviour to try and convey seriousness. Very differnt from their standard 'seriousness' of the 1980s. It went a bit off-message with Pop/PopMart, going too far down the cheesy/kitsch route and the message of what they were trying to convey got lost. As Bono said in 1997: "we started playing with irony, then it started playing with us". It all became a bit too weird.
@amdreh exactly so true, I mean it shows how lazy most pop 'stars' are and boring actually. Mike Patton did the same thing with his peeping tom album and it was brilliant. U2 are just too brilliant though lol
Larry dancing in a cowboy costume...what's not to like about that! HYSTERICAL!!! I am sure he protested..yet wiser minds did not prevail. LOL! Got paid well though I'll bet!!
Pop, no es mi álbum favorito de U2, pero tiene varios temas buenos... este es uno de los que me gusta (mi favoriot es Staring at the sun)! jajajajaja Baila sexy Bono :P
i love this song. U2 gone disco and they got it right. sometimes, everyone has to do a disco record every once in a while. NIN did it a couple of years ago and it kicked ass.
@kenthesinger bono's idea was to create a song that was sort of like an 'ode' to pop music and it's strongest era, which was the disco era...and they wanted to have rediculous fun with them! i remember hearing his explanation to MANY of his songs in '97 when he was at a L.A. radio station. Too bad i can't remember the name of it or i would look it up on here.
alot of people didn't like this album but it grew on me and is one of my favourite albums
