Friedkin did the impossible. He took an outstanding book and made the film superior to it. Thank God Blatty did not direct this film. He would have screwed it up.
I will never understand why Friedkin changed Reagans face for the 2000 re-cut in the psych. scene to that stupid "demon" face. It was better in the original version
@mrlopez2681 The good thing to know is the reason behind the 2000 version: it was released for Blatty. Friedkin has always preferred the original. Thanks for sharing, for commenting.
It´s so cute to see Linda Blair saying how innocent she was at the time (2:22) and how director William Friedkin did his best to keep sweet little Linda from moral corruption. Go to The Directors:The Films Of William Friedkin-The Exorcist and see how and why Linda got the part. Nice try Linda!
It is fascinating to watch this behind-the-scenes footage from The Exorcist. I've only ever seen the film twice - the first time about 8 years ago and again just this weekend - but I think it's a classic. It still blows my mind that a sweet, innocent 12 year old girl could turn into the monster that we see in the film. Linda Blair was one hell of an actress. Clearly the talent on that production was abundant, though.
I'm a massive fan of The Exorcist, but likewise, I'm a massive fan of Ken Russell's 'The Devils', & I think if the censors, both US & UK no longer deem it necessary to take issue with any concerns of blasphemy in relation to the masturbation with the crucifix scene, then why is there still such strict opposition to 'The Rape Of Christ' scene in The Devils? 'The Rape Of Christ' scene has allegorical-meaning within what is essentially an ANTI-blasphemous film. I don't get it. Inconsistent idiots!
@ardbastard1 It's a topic, but one that can go on and on. The Exorcist crucifix scene is plot driven, The Devils wants to offend. This is a scene that uses a figure that has ideals and qualities many aim to achieve. Whether you believe in the faith is something else, but don't we admire and want to be "good"? I mean, Christ is to many a father, a role model. You have to ask yourself if one would have the same reaction should the figure be one's father, brother, etc. The film wanted to offend.
@MuchasMovies All we have to look around to see the evidence of evil, not to mention the use of JESUS' name as a curse. Not Confusious or Budha, or Allah, but CHRIST.
@MuchasMovies Sorry about that, should have written it in context. Linda Blair, I think, said something about the theological aspect of the movie, and I commented without putting the statement in context. Apologies.
@giavannira I see this film at least twice a year. I've seen it since I was a child. My father was obsessed with horror films. Thanks for the share, and for commenting.
Today, if you heard about the relationship between the director and Linda Blair, saw the clips of them cuddling and knew what kind of acting she had to do, you'd have so many people screaming "pedo"... World has gone seriously paranoid about the issue...
Linda Blair claims that she didn't knew what masturbation meant, but I saw two different interviews with William Friedkin in which he said that when he first met Linda, he asked her if she knew what The Exorcist was about, an she said that it was about a girl who gets possessed by a demon, and does many things, like masturbating with a crucifix. Then he asked her if she knew what masturbation meant, and she said that she knew it, and that's why he hired her for the movie.
@xcited4vids so many things were happening in that scene, i don't know if there would have been any time to show a shaking bed, even though that's the way the scene is depicted in the novel...
@xcited4vids Actually, if you watch the footage earlier in the video, the bed IS shaking or being shaken. I don't know if they used that for the actual film or not.
and at the same time this is sad, because if the people of 1973 had seen this in that time when The Exorcist premiered in theaters, Linda Blair had received a better deal from the public and of course of the filamción studies. They never understood that this was a job and she did great because she managed to give life to one of the most memorable villains of all time.
OMG, so that is how the made the scene of the masturbation with the crucifix. Linda Blair was a brave young woman on this movie, a total professional actress even at her age. She is awesome and it looks like she has so much fun during the filming of the movie, even with that horrible make up on her beautiful face.
This wonderful documentary is not available on the DVD of the 25 th anniversary of The Exorcist. The DVD is packed with extras, but it does not have these rare archive footage.

@SapoLeiteiro1 I'm sure during the making of the film, Linda Blair masturbated a couple of times in her trailer.

@SapoLeiteiro1 Perhaps she said she knew what it meant, but didn't really? Kids do that all the time... just a thought.

I always thought the bed should have been shaking when the crucifix scene was taking place. It would have made the scene creepier.
