Oh baaabyyy, sing me a song, oh bbbaaaaby, take me along, I CAN SING! AND I CAN DANNNNNCE. Oh darlingggg, lets sway to the beat, and dance upon our feet.
@slr1238 Just about everyone recorded this!! I have a CD collection of Johnny Mathis and that song is not on it, but I still might have it...you mean it's not on YouTube already? I didn't search for it. I'll have to look.
If you enjoyed this song, come visit my veetle page (Current & Classic Radio Shows) under the Music tab. Every week my 60’s top 40 show does a week in the 60’s and the week of May 23rd has a countdown with this song!
Fell in love with this song after hearing it on the radio in March(?) 2010 on an AM station in NE Wisconsin. Much of the music I listen to is from way before my time (I'm 27 now), and it's a shame we don't hear more stuff like this on the radio anymore. This song (either this or the Four Coins recording of it) will be played at my wedding next year. Thanks for sharing!
@tmsenzig 'Gene & the Pearls' threw me off too. I read the description of Maxwell's 1964 recording & this fits it & sure enuff, buried in the comments, Gene says this IS Robert Maxwell & his Orchestra. Hope Gene adds '& His Orchestra' to the title. There's nothing better to me than hearing a composer who's also an orchestrator interpreting his own creation. It doesn't seem to happen a whole lot. My current feature is another RM & Orch. Come check out my 750 playlists of a century of music. chuck
thank you ejdav.....have been looking for this for 40+ years... now if only I could find the original "Spooky" by Mike sharpe ( not the ClassicsIV version)
@GPM1952 So glad I could provide you a song you've been looking for so long, hope you enjoy!!...Thank you for your comment. Have you Googled "Spooky"?
A a kid in early 60's Los angeles,my brothers and I would sit on Saturday evenings on our front lawn and hear this song blasting out of the little bar across the street from our house and we'd laugh at the drunks stumbling out with the music playing. lol. A lot of times the drunk was my dad and my uncles. lol. It seems there were bars on almost every corner in those days.
It's a dreamy song and not often you hear a song that has a stringed harp as part of an orchestra .I remember Western Auto selling this 45 rpm made by another group ,but there is a big difference in tone and rythym. Beautifully played and thank you for posting it on you tube Boats
PS - I think that the only other time that I heard this recording since '64 was at a strip club in the '70s. The beat does have that feel to it. So I can see why it was played there...
I remember when this came out in '64 right in the midst of the British explosion of music with all the great and pioneering British bands. This record was played right along with them on AM radio in New York City. It stood out most prominently and I always loved this recording. After that time, the record was hardly ever played again. You really have a great way of digging up the obscure and most memorable music from my youth. Thank you again...
I remember my father playing our grand piano with my mother singing this song to him. I was only 7 years old and yes I was astonished at their love for each other which was so romantic and beautiful . I will never forget this song which introduced me to true love and now I have my own true love of 30 years.Thank you for the memories.
OMG...personal memory: dancing to this 45 rpm on the ROOF of the Van Curler Hotel in Schenctady NY, on a frigid April night in 1967, with a boy I had a MAD crush on! Naturally, we had a portable phonograph, which made us "way cool" for our time! Thanks for having a SUPER music collection -- post, post, post!!
Hi ejdav: Great music...but I can't find it on Amazon as a downloadable MP3. It shows up on an Mad Men soundtrack CD under Maxwell's name, but Amazon doesn't have the right piece of music up under Maxwell Shangri La (wrong song, wrong length). On your original album, who does it show as the performer, and what album is it from? Thx.... Mark
Happy you are enjoying, but you know, I think I uploaded this song off a 45. That was the media I was working in at the time. I don't think it waseven stereo. I have so many in all types of media, it's hard to remember. If you can't find it, I can send you an MP3 of it. My song is by Robert Maxwell and His Orchestra.
Hi Gene...Thanks. I can get it off the one Mad Men soundtrack recording on Amazon, which doesn't break into indivudually downloadable numbers...was just tying to avoid paying $8 for one number. I googled Robert Maxwell orchestra... pretty swingin' sound for a harpist.
This is the 1964 recording that started my lifelong record collecting hobby.
Mr. Maxwell, born Robert Rosen, was a scholarship student at Juliard. When he entered the Coast Guard, singer Rudy Vallee was his commander, who encouraged him to play popular music.
Mr. Maxwell wrote his first hit, "Ebb Tide", while under contract with Mercury Records. He also wrote "Solveggio" -- the tune Ernie Kovacs used for his Nairobi Trio sketches. Mr. Maxwell's 2 brothers are also professional harpists..
Thank you so much "ejdav"....I have been looking for this on google & any other place that I could think of.....I remember my parents listening to this.....love instrumentals....good for the soul
hey! I was just a little confused i guess because the video said something about "gene and the pearls".When I was trying to find it originally it didn't actually direct me to R.M. But you're right, after playing my R.M.album,it is tune.
